Reviews : \Women artists : the Linda Nochlin reader\
2016
Reviews \"Women artists : the Linda Nochlin reader,\" edited by Maura Reilly (Thames & Hudson, 2015). Perhaps the best introduction to art historical analysis on the \"social construction\" of the woman artist, \"Women artists\" is also an outstanding overview of feminist art practice since the 1970s. Editor Maura Reilly opens with a substantial interview with Linda Nochlin, followed by 30 essays written by this outstanding scholar. 28 of these are culled from the hundreds of publications Nochlin has contributed to the discipline of art history over the last 48 years, while two essays, \"Ellen Altfest : a new, new Realism\" and \"Sophie Calle : word, image, and the end of Ekphrasis,\" are published because Nochlin has been so prolific--she has written on subjects as varied as the art of the French Revolution, 19th-century Realism, Courbet, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Modernism, contemporary art, and the history of photography--this weighty 472-page volume with plentiful color illustrations is noteworthy for its concentration on the topic of women's creative expression, about which Nochlin is an acknowledged expert. A Cost-Effectiveness Evaluation of a Jail-Based Chlamydia Screening Program for Men and Its Impact on Their Partners in the Community
2006
Background: Few cost-effectiveness evaluations of screening men in jails for chlamydia have been published, and none have evaluated the cost-effectiveness of providing partner notification services to the partners of chlamydia-infected inmates. Goal: The goal of this study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the chlamydia screening and partner notification programs for men conducted by a Massachusetts jail compared with 3 hypothetical alternatives. Study Design: Using jail cost and testing data, we used decision analyses to compare the cost and effectiveness of universal screening, age-based screening with 2 age cutoffs, and testing of symptomatic inmates at intake using treated cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea as the primary outcome. We also evaluated the cost-effectiveness of adding partner notification to these alternatives. Results: Universal screening was the most effective and expensive alternative. Age-based screening would have identified slightly fewer cases at half the cost of universal screening. The net cost of partner notification was low. Assuming high sequelae costs in female partners made partner notification a cost-saving intervention. Conclusions: Age-based screening could lower costs without substantially sacrificing effectiveness. Notifying partners of infected inmates was a cost-effective adjunct to screening inmates.

Hunting ground
\"Anna Latham didn't know how complicated life could be until she became a werewolf. And until she was mated to Charles Cornick, the son--and enforcer--of Bran, the leader of the North American werewolves, she didn't know how dangerous it could be, either... Anna and Charles have just been enlisted to attend a summit to present Bran's controversial proposition: that the wolves should finally reveal themselves to humans. But the most feared Alpha in Europe is dead set against the plan--and it seems like someone else might be, too. When Anna is attacked by vampires using pack magic, the kind of power only werewolves should be able to draw on, Charles and Anna must combine their talents to hunt down whoever is behind it all--or risk losing everything...\"--p. Null mutation in human ciliary neurotrophic factor gene confers higher body mass index in males
2002
Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) administration reduces weight in leptin-resistant mice via the signalling pathway normally activated by leptin. A G>A null mutation in the CNTF gene results in complete absence of protein. We hypothesised that absence of CNTF could lead to diminished initiation of anorectic pathways, with consequent increase in body mass. In 575 Caucasian men aged 59-73 years, the A/A genotype (frequency 1.9%) was associated with a 10 kg increase in weight (P=0.03, 2 df) and 3 kg/m(2) greater BMI (P=0.02, 2 df). There was no effect in women. The CNTF G>A null mutation therefore confers a moderate effect on obesity in males of A/A genotype, who represent 1% of the general population.
