OFF DUTY --- A Little Privacy, Please --- While most attempts to foil prying eyes block out light as well, these five solutions deliver both sunshine and seclusion
2016
In this master bath renovation, in the Woodlands, Texas, local designer Carla Aston customized a typical developer-designed bathroom to showcase the room's travertine marble floors. The leaded window replaced glass block installed by the developer. \"We wanted an uncluttered look, where the stone was the star,\" noted Ms. Aston. \"The creamy stained-glass design kept things simple and softer.\" Soap and water, too, call for a hands-free solution over a tub. \"Most people enjoy natural light but don't want to mess with opening and closing window treatments in a bathroom,\" she added. Translucent material lets light in while creating a retreat. \"Outdoor living is a classic tenet of Southern California design,\" said architect Deborah Richmond, who with former partner Olivier Touraine designed this house for themselves. \"We wanted as few barriers as possible between indoors and outdoors on the ground floor.\" And though the couple sought expansive views of their own garden, \"we did not necessarily want to commune with the sidewalk and our neighbors -- as cool and nice as they are -- all the time,\" said Ms. Richmond. So the pair planted a naturalistic screen of vegetation around the building to create a gentle buffer.

OFF DUTY --- Design & Decorating: Best of Both Worlds --- Barbara Bestor, the architect who coined the term 'bohemian modern,' weighs in on the latest iterations of the blended look
2015
In 2006, she published \"Bohemian Modern: Living in Silver Lake,\" which helped codify the look -- bright textiles and an eclectic assemblage of objects mixed with tastefully neutral tones -- and became an instant hit among design enthusiasts. The enduring appeal of the style is reflected in the release of three 2015 books: \"Bohemian Modern\" (Ryland Peters & Small), \"The New Bohemians: Cool and Collected Homes\" (Stewart, Tabori & Chang) and my own forthcoming book \"Retreat: The Modern House in Nature\" (Rizzoli). Early on in 2015's \"Bohemian Modern\" (not to be confused with Ms. [Barbara Bestor]'s 2006 book of the same name), author and interiors stylist Emily Henson describes her tome as an attempt to trace how the look has been interpreted in European homes, where the owners are \"bohemian in spirit, not just in style.\" This dining room, part of a converted 19th-century factory in the Dutch city of Nijmegen, offers a case study in papaya pink. As Ms. Bestor notes, Yves Saint Laurent's Jardin Majorelle in Marrakesh, a popular reference point for designers who favor Morrocan touches, could easily have inspired the juxtaposition of the Danish modern-style sofa and the tiny Moroccan table. \"Now Morocco is influential in general,\" she said, \"with low-slung living areas featuring whitewashed plaster walls with riots of color in textile and tile.\"
