Sudan Virus Persistence in Immune-Privileged Organs of Nonhuman Primate Survivors
After the 2022-2023 Sudan virus (SUDV) disease outbreak in Uganda, we studied SUDV persistence in nonhuman primates that had survived acute infection without therapeutic intervention. We identified SUDV persistence in the vitreous chamber and immediately adjacent tissue in the eyes as well as in the seminiferous tubules in the testes but not in common target organs typically infected during the acute phase of disease. Specifically, SUDV persists primarily in macrophages in the eyes and Sertoli cells in the testes. Ocular and testicular SUDV persistence in nonhuman primates is accompanied by tissue damage, including inflammatory cell invasion. Our study suggests that long-term follow-up efforts are needed to reduce possible recrudescent disease and reignition of outbreaks caused by virus persistence in human survivors of SUDV infection.

Retrospective detection of monkeypox virus in the testes of nonhuman primate survivors
Close contact through sexual activity has been associated with the spread of monkeypox virus (MPXV) in the ongoing, global 2022 epidemic. However, it remains unclear whether MPXV replicates in the testes or is transmitted via semen to produce an active infection. We carried out a retrospective analysis of MPXV-infected crab-eating macaque archival tissue samples from acute and convalescent phases of infection of clade I or clade II MPXV using immunostaining and RNA in situ hybridization. We detected MPXV in interstitial cells and seminiferous tubules of testes as well as epididymal lumina, which are the sites of sperm production and maturation. We also detected inflammation and necrosis during the acute phase of the disease by histological analysis. Finally, we found that MPXV was cleared from most organs during convalescence, including healed skin lesions, but could be detected for up to 37 d post-exposure in the testes of convalescent macaques. Our findings highlight the potential for sexual transmission of MPXV in humans. Detection of monkeypox viruses (MPXV) in archival testes samples from acute and convalescent MPXV-infected macaques provides evidence supporting the potential for sexual transmision of MPXV.

Fatty acid composition of the estuarine amphipod, Melita plumulosa (Zeidler): link between diet and fecundity
The influence of various diets on the survival, fecundity, and the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition of the benthic estuarine amphipod Melita plumulosa (Zeidler) in laboratory cultures were determined. Apart from a natural silty sediment, six commercial food supplements were examined: an omega-6 PUFA enriched Spirulina-based dry powder, Sera micron; a shrimp-based pellet food; an omega-3 PUFA enriched algal paste, Rotiselco-ALG; an omega-6 PUFA enriched algal dry powder, AlgaMac-ARA (arachidonic acid); flaxseed meal; and an omega-3 PUFA enriched dry powder, Frippak. We have previously established that M. plumulosa cultures perform poorly and eventually decline if provided with silty sediment alone, but will thrive if supplemented with Sera micron. Conversely, if the amphipods are cultured on a nutrient-depleted sand substrate, Sera micron alone does not constitute an adequate feed. The major difference in the fatty acid composition of M. plumulosa cultured on silty sediment compared to amphipods cultured on a sand substrate and both fed Sera micron was an increase in the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 PUFAs, indicating that the silty sediment provides additional food sources rich in omega-3 PUFAs. Furthermore, amphipods cultured in sand and fed any of the three algal-based foods or the Frippak powder as the sole food source had poor survival rates, although Sera micron maintained the best survival--this was attributed to it containing high amounts of β-carotene and terpenoids. Melita plumulosa fed a mixture of Sera micron in conjunction with the omega-3 PUFA enriched Rotiselco-ALG and cultured on a silty substrate were found to have good fecundity with low variability.
The Black LGBQ Experience During BLM: The Impact of Social Media on Vicarious Trauma and Resiliency
Social media has played a large role in the Black Lives Matter movement (BLM). The BLM movement originally developed into a social justice campaign after the deaths of Eric Garner in New York and Michael Brown in Ferguson. In 2020, the murder of George Floyd was captured on video and broadcasted on social media, prompting US-wide protests which inspired protests against anti-Black violence across the globe (Barrie, 2020). The impact of social media on symptoms of vicarious trauma experienced by Black people within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) community during the BLM movement is understudied. This study aimed to explore how Black LGBQ individuals’ participation on social media, particularly engaging in unregulated graphic images, could impact experiences of vicarious trauma and resiliency. This study found that social media following the murder of George Floyd, within the specified timeframe, did not mediate the pathway between race and vicarious trauma. It was also found that social media following the murder of George Floyd did not mediate the pathway between Black participants and resiliency. Although there were no significant findings, the questions asked in this study is an essential contribution to our understanding of the impact of social media on one's mental health amongst both Black and White LGBQ individuals.
