The Effects of Individual Variables, Farming System Characteristics and Perceived Barriers on Actual Use of Smart Farming Technologies: Evidence from the Piedmont Region, Northwestern Italy
Smart Farming Technologies (SFTs) have a real potential to deliver more productive and sustainable agricultural production. However, limited empirical research is available on the role played by objective and subjective factors in the adoption of such disruptive innovations, especially in the Italian context. This study investigated the role of education, farm size, being a sole farmer, and perceived barriers in affecting the use of SFTs in a sample of Italian farmers from the Piedmont region (North-West Italy). Three hundred and ten farming operators were questioned via a paper-and-pencil questionnaire. The analyses showed that low levels of education and working on-farm alone were positively associated with perceived economic barriers, which in turn were negatively associated with the adoption of SFTs. Farm size had a positive direct effect on SFT adoption. The results pointed out the need for targeted policies and training interventions to encourage the use of SFTs.
FRAM-Based Safety Culture Model for the Analysis of Socio-Technical and Environmental Variability in Mechanised Agricultural Activities
Mechanised agricultural operations are often performed individually, under minimal supervision and across a wide range of unfavourable working conditions, resulting in a complex mixture of hazards and external stressors that severely affect safety conditions. Socio-technical and environmental constraints significantly affect safety culture and require continuous performance adjustments to overcome timing pressures, resource limitations, and unstable weather conditions. This study introduces a FRAM-based safety culture model that embeds the thoroughness-efficiency trade-off (ETTO) in four distinct operational modes that adhere to specific safety cultures, namely, thoroughness, risk awareness, compliance, and efficiency. This model has been instantiated for mechanised ploughing: foreground task functions were coupled with background functions that represent socio-technical constraints and environmental variability, while severity classes for potential incidents were derived from the US OSHA accident database. The framework was also supported by a semi-quantitative Resonance Index based on severity and coupling strength, the Total Resonance Index (TRI), to assess how variability propagates in foreground functions and to identify hot-spot functions where small adjustments can escalate into high resonance and hazardous conditions. Results showed that the negative effects on functional resonance generated by safety detriment on TRI observed between compliance and effective working modes were three times larger than the drift between risk awareness and compliance, demonstrating that efficiency comes with a much higher cost than keeping safety at compliance levels. Extending the proposed approach with quantitative assessments could further support the management of socio-technical and environmental drivers in mechanised farming, strengthening the role of safety as a competitive asset for enhancing resilience and service quality.
Open Innovation and Public–Private Collaboration in Manufacturing: A Case Study from Piedmont, Northern Italy
This study explores the dynamics of Open Innovation (OI) in manufacturing firms, with particular attention to collaboration with public research institutions. The research is performed in the Piedmont region, Northern Italy, which represents one of Italy’s leading innovation regions, with a strong manufacturing heritage and an active strategy to foster industrial transition through innovation clusters and partnerships. The research analyzes survey responses from 82 managers and decision-makers in manufacturing firms belonging to the local manufacturing ecosystem. The questionnaire investigated how company size, organizational structure for research and development (R&D), perceived importance of collaboration, innovation drivers and barriers, and trust in research institutions affect four types of innovation: product, process, marketing, and organizational. Results indicate that collaboration with other private companies is significantly associated with product innovation, while collaboration with public research institutions is associated to both product and process innovation. The level of R&D structuring in the management of innovative projects and trust in the expertise of public research organizations are also positively associated with product innovation. In addition, key drivers—such as the availability of dedicated financial resources, staff creativity, and openness to external partnerships—are significantly related to process innovation. The findings suggest that regional policymakers and industry stakeholders should promote targeted measures to strengthen OI adoption, particularly by improving the perceived competence and transparency of public research organizations.
Fostering the Circular Approach Among Professional and Hobby Farmers: The Effects of Information Sources and Farmers’ Perceptions on the Intention to Adopt Compost from Organic Municipal Waste
The organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) compost has the potential to be an effective soil improver, and agriculture is the industry with the largest potential market for its adoption, followed by landscaping and gardening hobbyist uses. Understanding which factors foster the intention to adopt OFMSW compost among users engaged in agricultural activities is, therefore, crucial for its diffusion. A paper-and-pencil questionnaire was administered to 119 visitors involved in farming activities at an exhibition focused on the green and circular economy. The PROCESS macro for SPSS model 8 was applied to test a moderated mediated model to investigate the relationship between being a professional or hobby farmer, perceived drivers and the intention to adopt compost, with the moderation of the frequency of exposure to different information sources. The results showed that hobbyists perceived more drivers for compost adoption. In turn, the perceived drivers had a positive impact on users’ intention to adopt. Moreover, with a low frequency of use of information sources, professionals perceived fewer advantages of compost adoption. The present study highlighted the need to enhance discussions about compost properties and benefits, especially for professional farmers.
Perceived Working Conditions and Intention to Adopt Digital Safety Training in High-Risk Productive Sectors: An Exploratory Study in Manufacturing and Agriculture in Northwest Italy
Agriculture and manufacturing report the highest rate of occupational accidents and fatalities in Italy. Safety training provided through digital devices has been shown to be effective in promoting safety behaviors at work. This study aimed to investigate through a questionnaire the perceptions of working conditions, risks in using machines, and interest in using digital devices for safety training purposes in a group of vineyard workers (VWs, N = 40) and manufacturing workers (MWs, N = 39) in Northwest Italy. Referring to working conditions, VWs significantly differ compared to MWs (p < 0.05) in fatigue perception, repetitiveness, quantity and definition of tasks compared to the available time, work pace definition, and level of communication. Tractors and lathes were considered the most hazardous machinery for VWs and MWs, respectively. For both groups, workers’ age negatively correlated with digital device use (r = −0.399 p < 0.05 for VWs, r = −0.673 p < 0.01 for MWs) but not with interest in using them. Device adoption positively correlated with the perceived importance of gamification content (r = 0.193 and r = 0.164, p > 0.05 for VWs and MWs, respectively), but the video lessons reported a higher mean score by both groups as preferred content. These findings suggest that digital safety training requires customized content to effectively adapt to different productive sectors.
Farmers’ Attitudes toward On-Farm Adoption of Soil Organic Matter in Piedmont Region, Italy
This study aimed at exploring the frequency of use and perceived benefits of application of organic matter to the soil in a group of Italian farmers, investigating also the preferred sources of information, to identify potential interventions to promote the improvement of the soil organic matter. The study has been carried out administering a 21-item paper-and-pencil questionnaire to 44 farmers. The results of the study highlighted that the main perceived benefit linked to soil organic matter application is related to its capacity of increasing productivity, while the aspects related to work pace, production costs, and implications with the climate change appeared to be less relevant. According to the results of the study, web targeted information campaigns for the smaller farms operators and training activities for the bigger farms operators are the most effective solutions to make farmers aware of the importance of increasing soil organic matter content.
Discomfort in Use and Physical Disturbance of FFP2 Masks in a Group of Italian Doctors, Nurses and Nursing Aides during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Face masks represent an effective COVID-19 mitigation strategy; this study investigated the quality in use of FFP2 masks in a group of 156 frontline HCWs recruited through a snowball procedure in northwest Italy. Participants filled out an online questionnaire (January 2022) on FFP2 sources of discomfort, physical disturbance at different anatomical points and suggestions for improvement. Most of the participants (69%) reported a feeling of protection and safety, but they also reported episodes of dyspnea (70%). The majority of glasses wearers (62%) reported fogging and displacement of their glasses. Humidity and heat were the main discomfort sources (39%), followed by elastic bands (32%). Physical disturbances were frequent and heavier on the ears, nose and cheekbones. Nursing aides and nurses perceived significantly more discomfort compared to doctors and nursing aides had the highest rate of physical disturbance. To address these issues, following participants’ suggestions, FFP2 masks should be redesigned to be more adjustable, with different sizes and softer fabrics. The investigation pointed out criticalities in the use of FFP2 masks related to different professional roles within the overall group of HCWs and stressed the need for an FFP2 human-centered design that accounts not only for physical needs but also for workload and task variability.
Considering Human Variability in the Design of Safe Interaction with Agricultural Machinery: The Case of Foldable Roll-Over Protective Structure (FROPS) Manual Handling
The foldable roll-over protective structure (FROPS) protects the operators against fatal injuries in tractor roll-over accidents. However, a rear-mounted FROPS is often folded down or removed. In the present study, the accessible zones and grasping areas in a rear-mounted FROPS were redesigned and adapted to the 5th, 50th, and 95th European human anthropometric percentiles to enhance its correct and comfortable use. Then, a rod was proposed as a design solution to make the roll-bar grasping areas fall within the new accessible zones. The rod prototype increased roll-bar reachability and facilitated the raising handling, especially for shorter users. The present study results and the accessible zones redesigned, taking into account the human percentiles, will be helpful in rethinking reachability issues in manual handling of machinery components, to support the correct behaviours, and make human-machine interaction more comfortable and safer for all.
Risk Assessment for Musculoskeletal Disorders in Forestry: A Comparison between RULA and REBA in the Manual Feeding of a Wood-Chipper
The analysis of the postural attitude of workers during the interaction with workstation’s elements and working environment is essential in the evaluation and prevention of biomechanical overload risk in workplaces. RULA (Rapid Upper Limb Assessment) and REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) are the two easiest methods for postural risk assessment in the workplace. Few studies investigated postural risk in forestry sector with regard to human–machine interaction, in particular manually fed wood-chippers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the postures assumed by an operator during the manual feeding of a wood-chipper, and to compare RULA and REBA, in order to identify the more effective and appropriate method for the assessment of the risk of biomechanical postural overload. The results pointed out several postural issues of the upper limbs, and showed that RULA is a more precautionary method to protect operator’s health during the targeted tasks. Implications to improve the human–wood-chipper interaction are discussed.
Gender Differences in the Perception of Honour Killing in Individualist Versus Collectivistic Cultures: Comparison Between Italy and Turkey
Gender differences in the perception of honour killing were investigated in two countries, both traditionally considered honour cultures but with differing degrees of individualism and collectivism: Italy and Turkey. Ninety-six Turkish undergraduate students attending Istanbul University (40 % males, mean age = 21.2 years) and 68 Italian undergraduate students attending Turin University (34 % males, mean age = 24.6 years) filled in a questionnaire which assessed the perception of three honour killing scenarios (scenario 1: alleged adultery, scenario 2: adultery, scenario 3: adultery in flagrante delicto ). The questionnaire measured the attribution of assailant and victim responsibility, the proposed punishment for the assailant, and the evaluation of the incidents as crimes. Results showed that regardless gender Turkish participants attributed more responsibility to the victim and less responsibility to the assailant, and proposed less severe punishments than the Italian participants. Moreover, Turkish men attributed less responsibility to the assailant and proposed less severe punishments than Turkish women. Finally, there was an interaction of gender by culture by scenario: Turkish women attributed less responsibility to the victim in the case of alleged adultery, compared to their male counterparts. These results are discussed in terms of the complex interaction between gender roles and the individualist versus collectivist social organization of Italy and Turkey, and the profound social changes that both countries have undergone in recent decades.
