[Anthony] Milner offers the reader his readings of certain non-literary Malay texts of the 19th Century and early 20th Century, not as sources of historical information, but more as rival representations of ideas about individualism, identity, ethnicity, religion, education, science and society which make up what he considers to be the basic issues of Malay politics. As the investigation of Malay political discourse gets under way, however, one finds Milner reacting diffidently at times to his own \"invention\". He discovers that pre-colonial Malay society did have politics of some sort and begins to modify his \"invention\". He sometimes calls the discourse on Malay politics from the 1820s \"new politics\" and the old politics \"kerajaan (sultanate) politics\". In fact, Milner's \"invention\" of Malay politics is an artificial, troublesome creation. At best, he should simply have called it a discourse of Malay politics during colonial rule. In the pre-colonial past, Malay politics had centred around succession disputes to the throne, a frequent theme in Malay history from the Malacca Sultanate in the 15th Century onwards. Because of these perennial disputes, one historian, Michael Adas, has called such states \"contest states\".
