Furious dusk
\"Rhina P. Espaillat, judge of the 2014 Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize, describes Furious Dusk, David Campos's winning collection, as \"a work whose five parts trace a son's efforts--only partially successful--to fulfill his father's expectations and--perhaps even more difficult--understand those expectations enough to forgive them.\" The poet's reflections are catalyzed by learning of his father's impending death, which, in turn, forces him to examine his father's expectations against his own evolving concept of what it means to be a man. The poems' speaker sifts through his past to find the speckles of memory that highlight the pressures to fit the mold of masculinity forged both by the Mexican culture of his father and the American culture he inhabits. The problematic norms of both rip the speaker in two directions as he recounts his father's severe parenting, as he explores the inability to father a child, as he witnesses human suffering, as he overeats and confronts the effects on his body, and, finally, as he realizes what it means to transcend these expectations. The speaker's epiphany frees him to reject masculine stereotypes and allows him to see himself simply as a human being. Ethical concerns about fashionable dog breeding
The historical relationship between humans and dogs has involved selective breeding for various purposes, such as hunting, guarding, and service roles. However, over time, there has been a shift in preferences from functionality to aesthetics, which has influenced the diverse sizes, shapes, and coats of dog breeds. This review looks at fashionable dog breeding and questions the ethics of prioritising looks over health and behaviour. It aims to alert potential owners, breeders, and regulators to the importance of considering a dog’s overall well-being, not just its appearance, which has resulted in fad breeding, leading to genetic disorders, health issues, and a loss of biodiversity. Ethical concerns arise from breeding brachycephalic breeds with respiratory conditions, inbreeding causing inherited disorders, and overbreeding popular breeds while shelter dogs remain unadopted. Additionally, the impact of cosmetic surgeries on popular dog breeds, as well as the neglect of behavioural traits in favour of physical characteristics and strict breeding practices are also considered. The current breeding model can have a negative impact on the emotional and cognitive well-being of dogs, resulting in issues such as aggression, anxiety, and other behavioural problems that can significantly reduce their overall quality of life. Unregulated breeding practices and the demand for rare breeds can lead to illegal breeding, compromising animal welfare. Prospective owners, veterinarians, kennel clubs, and legislators all need to play a responsible role in protecting animals.

A Systematic Review of Medical Cannabinoids Dosing in Human
This systematic review assesses currently available clinical information on which cannabinoids and what range of doses have been used to achieve positive effects in a diversity of medical context. The data were collected according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol guidelines. Inclusion criteria were articles that assessed administration of any cannabinoid to any clinical population, reported in the ClinicalTrials.gov or PubMed databases, that involved a comparison with other treatment or placebo and a result measurement to assess the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the cannabinoid. Exclusion criteria were review or letter; articles not in the English language; not full-text articles; not a clinical trial, case report, case series, open-label trial, or pilot study; administration in animals, in vitro, or in healthy participants; cannabinoids administered in combination with other cannabinoids (except for cannabidiol [CBD] or tetrahydrocannabinol [THC]) or as whole cannabis extracts; no stated concentration; inhalation or smoke as a route of administration; and no results described. The articles were assessed by the risk of bias. In total, 1668 articles were recovered, of which 55 studies met the inclusion criteria for 21 diseases. Positive effects were reported in clinical studies: 52% with THC (range, 0.01–0.5 mg/kg/d [0.62–31 mg/d]), 74% with CBD (range, 1–50 mg/kg/d [62–3100 mg/d]), 64% with THC-CBD (mean, 1:1.3 mg/kg/d [ratio, 1:1]), and 100% with tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) (0.2 mg/kg/d). THC, CBD, and THCV can regulate activity in several pathologies. New studies of cannabinoids are highly encouraged because each patient is unique and requires a unique cannabinoid medication. Asymmetric Operation of Power Networks, State of the Art, Challenges, and Opportunities
The asymmetric operation is a method that allows High and Extra-High Voltage (HV, EHV) power lines to function with one or two phases open. With the increasing share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in National Power Systems (NPS), they are becoming more volatile and less reliable due to decreasing inertia and other issues related to the integration and exploitation of the Inverter-Based Resources (IBR) (decreasing short-circuit ratio, different types of interactions, etc.). On the other hand, phase-to-ground faults are a common cause of tripping off power lines which affects the overall reliability of the power system. Thus, for power systems experiencing a decreasing trend in reliability and robustness, the asymmetrical operation of the power lines may enhance them. In this way, this article reviews the state of the art and new developments in the academic landscape regarding asymmetrical operation. The review is not, however, limited to HV and EHV systems, so it examines cases of asymmetric operation in Low and Medium Voltages (LV, MV) as well. The challenges and opportunities that this unique mode of operation imposes on power networks are also presented, providing a fresh reference for researchers looking to enter this topic.
Dendritic excitations govern back-propagation via a spike-rate accelerometer
Dendrites on neurons support electrical excitations, but the computational significance of these events is not well understood. We developed molecular, optical, and computational tools for all-optical electrophysiology in dendrites. We mapped sub-millisecond voltage dynamics throughout the dendritic trees of CA1 pyramidal neurons under diverse optogenetic and synaptic stimulus patterns, in acute brain slices. Our data show history-dependent spike back-propagation in distal dendrites, driven by locally generated Na + spikes (dSpikes). Dendritic depolarization created a transient window for dSpike propagation, opened by A-type K V channel inactivation, and closed by slow Na V inactivation. Collisions of dSpikes with synaptic inputs triggered calcium channel and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR)-dependent dendritic plateau potentials and accompanying complex spikes at the soma. This hierarchical ion channel network acts as a spike-rate accelerometer, providing an intuitive picture connecting dendritic biophysics to associative plasticity rules. Neural mechanisms mediating information flow and processing in dendrites are not fully understood. Here the authors developed techniques to map bioelectrical excitations in the dendrites of neurons in acute slices of mouse brain tissue. They developed a holistic picture of the roles of dendritic excitations in spike back-propagation.
Cu2O, ZnO, and Ag/ Cu2O nanoparticles synthesized by biogenic and chemical route and their effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans
Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans are two important pathogens in public health due to the infections they cause in immunocompromised patients and with hospital stay, increasing morbimortality rates. Three groups of Cu 2 O, ZnO, and Ag/Cu 2 O nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized physicochemically and confronted to P. aeruginosa and C. albicans to determine their antibacterial effect. Statistical analyses were performed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) (p < 0.001). The structures of Cu 2 O, ZnO, and Ag/Cu 2 O nanoparticles were spherical, sized 6 nm, 10 nm, and 50 nm for Ag, Cu 2 , and Zn metals, respectively. Furthermore, a 100% antibacterial and antifungal effect against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans was observed for Cu 2 O, ZnO, and Ag/Cu 2 O nanoparticles respectively. It is concluded from these findings that the nanoparticles synthesized by biogenic and chemical route had a good size between 6 and 50 nm and that Cu 2 O, ZnO, and Ag/Cu 2 O nanoparticles presented an excellent antibacterial (100% growth inhibition) effect against P. aeruginosa and C. albicans (p < 0.001) compared to the control.
Green Synthesis of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles with Eucalyptus globulus Extract and Their Application in the Removal of Heavy Metals from Agricultural Soil
The green synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles is presented as an excellent sustainable alternative for achieving nanostructures, with potential applications. This research provides important information regarding the influence of the type of solvent used in extracting organic reducing agents from E. globulus on the FeO NPs green synthesis protocol. A broad approach to characterization is presented, where UV-vis spectrophotometry suggests the presence of this type of nanoparticulate material. Likewise, the reduction mechanism was evaluated by FT-IR and the magnetic properties were evaluated by PPSM. In addition, characterizations were linked via elemental analysis (EDX), crystallographic characterization (XRD), electron microscopy (SEM/STEM), and Z potential to evaluate colloidal stability. The results show the influence of the type of solvent used for the extraction of organic reducing agents from E. globulus, and the effect on the synthesis of FeO NPs. In addition, the nanostructure material obtained showed excellent efficiency in the remediation of agricultural soil, eliminating metals such as Cr-VI, Cd, and, to a lesser extent, Pb.
Democratization of PV Micro-Generation System Monitoring Based on Narrowband-IoT
Power system configuration and performance are changing very quickly. Under the new paradigm of prosumers and energy communities, grids are increasingly influenced by microgeneration systems connected in both low and medium voltage. In addition, these facilities provide little or no information to distribution and/or transmission system operators, increasing power system management problems. Actually, information is a great asset to manage this new situation. The arrival of affordable and open Internet of Things (IoT) technologies is a remarkable opportunity to overcome these inconveniences allowing for the exchange of information about these plants. In this paper, we propose a monitoring solution applicable to photovoltaic self-consumption or any other microgeneration installation, covering the installations of the so-called ’prosumers’ and aiming to provide a tool for local self-consumption monitoring. A detailed description of the proposed system at the hardware level is provided, and extended information on the communication characteristics and data packets is also included. Results of different field test campaigns carried out in real PV self-consumption installations connected to the grid are described and analyzed. It can be affirmed that the proposed solution provides outstanding results in reliability and accuracy, being a popular solution for those who cannot afford professional monitoring platforms.
