Johannesburg Art Gallery and the Urban Future
2003
The Johannesburg Art Gallery (Figure 1) was established in 1910 as part of an attempt to create a cultural infrastructure that would encourage suitable family settlers from England. Its foundation collection, funded by mining magnates, promoted British cultural values to the exclusion of a South African content. Today its collection is predominantly South African with many black artists represented. The history of the gallery is one of interaction with its local environment both in the way its collection has developed and through its location in Joubert Park.
