In recent years, several efforts have been made to develop tomato cultivars displaying both late blight resistance and good organoleptic fruit quality. Selection indexes are considered the best option to perform genotype selection when many different traits are being considered to select genotypes as close to the desired ideotype as possible. Therefore, this study aimed at selecting late blight-resistant tomato families based on their fruit quality attributes using factor analysis and ideotype-design / best linear unbiased predictor (FAI-BLUP) index. For this purpose, we assessed the fruit quality parameters of 81 F3:5 tomato families previously selected as late blight resistant. The tomato cultivars Thaise, Argos, and Liberty were included in the trial as checks. The experimental arrangement consisted of complete randomized blocks with three replicates. Each plot was formed by five plants, three of which were used in the fruit quality assessment. The quality parameters assessed were fruit diameter, fruit length, fruit color (L, a*, C, and H), fruit firmness, titratable acidity, soluble solids content, hydrogen potential, and SS:TA ratio. Fruit quality data were analyzed using the mixed model methodology via REML/BLUP (restricted residual maximum likelihood / best linear unbiased prediction) to obtain BLUPs that were further subjected to the FAI-BLUP selection index. The FAI-BLUP was efficient in selecting late blight-resistant tomato genotypes based on their fruit quality attributes. Fourteen tomato families were classified as closest to the desirable ideotype for fruit quality. These genotypes should move on to the following stages of the tomato breeding program.

2020

2019
ABSTRACT In the face of climatic adversities associated with water lacking for irrigation, crop cultivation in greenhouses in Brazil has increased significantly, thereby demanding research that makes it possible to estimate crop water demand when grown in these environments. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of Irrigameters to estimate the evapotranspiration of cowpea grown in protected environment. The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of the State University of Southwest of Bahia (UESB) under protected environment and the cowpea variety used was BRS Guariba. For this study, two Irrigameters were installed for the direct estimation of the daily crop evapotranspiration. Likewise, with the use of an automatic weather, the meteorological data were collected and the crop evapotranspiration (ETc) was estimated using the Kc values recommended for different phases of the crop. The data collected by the Irrigameter were compared with the data estimated by the Penman-Monteith method, as well as with Radiation and Blaney Criddle methods at one-, two- and three-day intervals. The results show that all the methods were efficient and accurate at estimating ETc at all studied intervals.

Plastic mulches have been extensively used In tomato fields around the world; Its use has been growing In Brazil, especially in semi-arid regions. However, whether plastic mulches are beneficial to tomato grown in the Brazilian semi-arid and should replace other traditionally used practices is little known. Two on-farm experiments were carried out aiming at assessing the yield response of 'Trucker' hybrid tomato to plastic mulching in interaction with other practices, viz, irrigation, earthing up, and plant population. The first experiment consisted of a randomized block design with six treatments arranged in a 3 × 2 factorial and replicated four times: three crop practices (earthing up, plastic mulching and bare soil) combined with two plant populations (12,500 and 10,416 plants ha-1). The second experiment was a randomized complete block design with four replications, in a splitplot arrangement. Irrigation levels (305, 440, 495, 610 and 725 mm cycle-1) were assigned to plots, and mulching and earthing up to subplots. Fruit diameter, fruit weight and crop yield were evaluated. Plastic mulching had no effect on crop yields and water-use efficiency at both experiments. Overall, the results suggest planting 'Trucker' tomato at 12,500 plants ha-1, 580-630 mm cycle-1 of irrigation, and without plastic mulching.
