Metformin: A Novel Weapon Against Inflammation
It has become widely accepted that inflammation is a driving force behind a variety of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, etc. However, the existing nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs show a limited utility in clinical patients. Therefore, the novel agents with different inflammation-inhibitory mechanisms are worth pursuing. Metformin, a synthetic derivative of guanidine, has a history of more than 50 years of clinical experience in treating patients with type 2 diabetes. Intense research efforts have been dedicated to proving metformin’s inflammation-inhibitory effects in cells, animal models, patient records, and randomized clinical trials. The emerging evidence also indicates its therapeutic potential in clinical domains other than type 2 diabetes. Herein, this article appraises current pre-clinical and clinical findings, emphasizing metformin’s anti-inflammatory properties under individual pathophysiological scenarios. In summary, the anti-inflammatory effects of metformin are evident in pre-clinical models. By comparison, there are still clinical perplexities to be addressed in repurposing metformin to inflammation-driven chronic diseases. Future randomized controlled trials, incorporating better stratification/targeting, would establish metformin’s utility in this clinical setting.
Relationship between serum albumin level and hospitalization duration following percutaneous coronary intervention for acute coronary syndrome
Low serum albumin levels increase coronary morbidity, mortality, and postoperative cardiovascular risk. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between these levels and the length of hospital stay in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute coronary syndrome. A total of 350 patients were divided into quartiles according to serum albumin levels. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors associated with the length of hospital stay. A non-linear regression analysis of serum albumin and length of hospital stay was also performed. The results of the multifactorial analysis revealed low serum albumin levels as an independent predictor of longer hospital stay, even in the fully adjusted model. In the segmented linear regression model, serum albumin level showed a U-shaped relationship with the length of hospital stay. In conclusion, low serum albumin level was an independent predictor of longer hospital stay in patients undergoing PCI for acute coronary syndrome, with shorter stays observed for increasing serum albumin levels. Low serum albumin can be used to identify patients who require longer hospitalization and may need additional nutritional support or interventions to improve their prognosis.
Effect of subsea dispersant application on deepwater oil spill in the South China Sea
There are considerable amounts of offshore oil/gas fields in the South China Sea (SCS), and for potential oil spill events in this area, dispersants may provide a reliable large-scale response when the preferable option of recapturing the oil cannot be achieved. In this paper, effect of chemical dispersants on underwater oil transport is investigated with an underwater oil spill model. Since the model is an adaption of an existing one, we first calibrate it by comparing the model result with echo-sounder data that were observed during the “DeepSpill” experiment with crude oil/LNG (liquefied natural gas) discharge. Then, with the hydrodynamic data provided by an operational forecasting system and the drilling data obtained from offshore platforms in the SCS, we apply the model to a hypothetical spill case, and examine the difference in oil distribution in water column caused by subsea dispersant application. The model results can provide valuable reference for contingency plan makers to make an efficient emergency response to potential underwater oil spill accidents in the SCS.
The impact of banks’ financial performance on environmental performance in Africa
To better understand Africa’s banks and the environment, this study investigates the impact of financial performance on environmental performance in Africa. We examined financial performance, environmental performance, and some control indicators dated from 2000 to 2016 by applying panel quantile regression and panel vector autoregressive techniques. Our results indicate that (i) in North African countries, carbon emission had a significant negative impact on financial performance on the 25th quantile and (ii) in the South, carbon emission had a statistically positive impact on financial performance on the 25th and 50th quantiles with the marginal effect increases from the lower quantile to the highest quantile. Also, bank deposits statistically negatively impacted financial performance on the 25th and 50th quantiles for both North and South economies. The dynamic panel quantile results show dissimilar effects at different quantiles. Also, the panel vector autoregressive results show that in North Africa carbon emission had a positive impact. Our results validate the stability test of the panel vector autoregressive model. The granger causality results in the North show a bilateral causal link between carbon emission and bank credit, carbon emission, and bank deposit. Since sustainability has become one of our era’s most thorny issues, this paper provides extensive policy directives to assist African nations in boosting a greener future.
Association between serum calcium level and in-hospital mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction: a retrospective cohort study
The association between serum calcium levels and the prognosis of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains controversial. This study aimed to explore the association between serum calcium and in-hospital mortality in patients with AMI. The data of this study were extracted from the Philips eICU Collaborative Research Database. A total of 7284 patients were eventually enrolled in this study, of which 799 (10.97%) died during hospitalization. For each patient, serum calcium, corrected to albumin, was calculated and categorized into four groups: Q1 ≤ 8.5, Q2 8.5–9.5, Q3 9.5–10.5, and Q4 > 10.5 mg/dL. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that corrected sCa was an independent predictor of in-hospital death (Q2 vs. Q1, OR 0.5, 95% CI 0.4–0.7, P  < 0.001; Q3 vs. Q1, OR 0.8, 95% CI 0.6–1.0, P  = 0.035; Q4 vs. Q1, OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.1–2.3, P  = 0.008). The association remained stable in the fully adjusted model. A significant U-shaped association between corrected serum calcium and in-hospital mortality was observed in piecewise linear regression model (Corrected sCa < 9.4 mg/dL, OR 0.8, 95% CI 0.7–0.9, P  < 0.001; corrected sCa > 9.4 mg/dL, OR 1.5, 95% CI 1.3–1.8, P  < 0.001). In conclusion, both decreased and increased corrected serum calcium is associated with increased in-hospital mortality in patients with AMI, and patients may have the lowest risk of in-hospital death when corrected serum calcium is 9.4 mg/dL (2.35 mmol/L).
Diffusion Tensor Imaging Along the Perivascular Space Index in Different Stages of Parkinson’s Disease
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the glymphatic system activity in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) using the diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) methods. Methods: In total, 71 patients with idiopathic PD and 36 age- and sex-matched normal controls (NCs) were involved. Patients with PD were divided into early ( n = 35) and late ( n = 36) subgroups, based on Hoehn and Yahr (HY) stages. We calculated the diffusivity along the perivascular spaces (ALPS), as well as projection fibers and association fibers separately, to acquire the ALPS index. Enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS) and periventricular white matter hyperintensities were also rated. Differences in ALPS index between the PD group and NCs and between two PD subgroups and NCs were compared. In addition, a multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to investigate the association between ALPS index and clinical variables. Results: Patients with PD revealed lower ALPS index than NCs ( p = 0.010). The late PD group exhibited significantly lower ALPS index than NCs ( p = 0.006). However, there were no marked differences noticed in ALPS index between NCs and early PD group and between the two PD subgroups. In the early PD group, there was a significantly positive correlation between ALPS index and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score (β = 0.021, p = 0.029) and a negative correlation between ALPS index and EPVS score (β = −0.050, p = 0.034), after controlling for multiple variables. In the late PD group, ALPS index was inversely associated with age (β = −0.012, p = 0.004). Conclusion: Impairment of the glymphatic system is involved in PD. DTI-ALPS index could be a promising biomarker of glymphatic system in PD.
Tourism and sustainable development in China: a review
The adaption of the open-up reform policies in China some three decades ago has resulted in a rapid economic transformation of which the tourism sector has equally witnessed fast development. Therefore, the essence of this article is to review the evolution and expansion of the tourism industry in China and its obligation to observing international sustainable development policies and practices. Indications of the current policy regime, establishment, and institutions, sustainable development strategies to ensure continuity and availability of resources for future use, environmental sustainability laws and regulations, and promotional events for the development of the tourism industry are made available in this article. In effect, this article reviews how the activities of the tourism sector impacts on the environment. The findings show that China in its quest to be a world leader of tourists’ destination has impacted negatively on the environment which by extension affect the economy and society at large. On the other hand, as a leading nation in the United Nations, China has in contemporary times adapted sustainable development strategies to help safeguard the environment. However, more needs to be done in the area of advanced technology and renewable energy.
Dynamic Evaluation and Forecasting Analysis of Touristic Ecological Carrying Capacity of Forest Parks in China
Forest park tourism ecological security is the cornerstone of ensuring ecological tourism safety. Delineating the ecological carrying capacity within forest parks is crucial for enhancing the security of forest tourism resources. This study utilizes statistical data from China’s forest parks spanning 2004 to 2019, employing methodologies to comprehensively depict the spatiotemporal dynamic characteristics of forest park tourism ecology in China. Subsequently, this research forecasts the prospective trajectory of forest park tourism ecology in China from 2020 to 2029. The research findings reveal that China’s forest park tourism ecological footprint exhibits oscillating characteristics, while the overall touristic ecological carrying capacity shows a sustained upward trend. However, a significant portion of regions experience deficits in tourism ecology. Notably, the coldspot regions with ecological security features demonstrate relative stability, while the hotspot areas gradually transition from inland to eastern coastal regions. Spatially and temporally, the disparities in touristic ecological profit and deficit depict a “U”-shaped distribution, more pronounced along the east–west axis than the north–south orientation. The migratory shift in the touristic ecological surplus and deficit center gravitates towards the southwest, demonstrating a fluctuating trend characterized by varying migration speeds. The discernible difference between the east and west concerning touristic ecological profit and deficit amplifies the likelihood of imbalance, surpassing disparities between the north and south. Projections suggest a deepening forest park tourism ecological deficit in China from 2020 to 2029, particularly accentuating the unsustainable development of forest park resources in economically developed regions. Through this study, a more comprehensive understanding of the current status and changing trends in the ecological carrying capacity of forest park tourism can be obtained. This research provides theoretical and practical support to promote sustainable tourism development and establishes a solid foundation for the ecological security of future forest park tourism.
Effective and Acceptable Eco-Driving Guidance for Human-Driving Vehicles: A Review
Eco-driving guidance refers to courses, warnings, or suggestions provided to human drivers to improve driving behaviour to enable less energy use and emissions. This paper reviews existing eco-driving guidance studies and identifies challenges to tackle in the future. We summarize two categories of current guidance systems, static and dynamic, distinguished by whether real-world driving records are used to generate behaviour guidance or not. We find that influencing factors, such as the content of suggestions, the display methods, and drivers’ socio-demographic characteristics, have varied effects on the guidance results across studies. Drivers are reported to have basic eco-driving knowledge, while the question of how to motivate the acceptance and practice of such behaviour, especially in the long term, is overlooked. Adaptive driving suggestions based on drivers’ individual habits can improve the effectiveness and acceptance while this field is under investigation. In-vehicle assistance presents potential safety issues, and visualized in-vehicle assistance is reported to be most distractive. Given existing studies focusing on the operational level, a common agreement on the guidance design and associated influencing factors has yet to be reached. Research on the systematic and tactical design of eco-driving guidance and in-vehicle interaction is advised.
The spatial effect of tourism economic development on regional ecological efficiency
The process of tourism economic development is accompanied by the consumption of energy and environment. It is of a big significance to measure the level of tourism economic development and regional eco-efficiency correctly to clarify the relationship between them, as it contributes to realizing the high-quality development of the tourism economy and the construction of “beautiful China”. On the basis of the panel data of China’s 30 provinces and cities from 2002 to 2016, the paper intends to evaluate the regional eco-efficiency and tourism economic development level by using the super-efficiency DEA model and the grey entropy weight method, and then construct spatial panel econometric model which is based on the previous data to deeply discuss the influence of tourism economy development on regional ecological efficiency and its spatial effect. The research shows that (1) regional ecological efficiency has significant spatial dependence and spatial aggregation characteristics. With the passing of time, this kind of positive spatial autocorrelation is gradually strengthened. (2) In the long-term development, tourism economic development and regional ecological efficiency show a more obvious “Kuznets curve” effect. (3) The “U”-curve relationship between urbanization, environmental regulation, and regional eco-efficiency was confirmed. (4) In the process of tourism economic transformation and development, industrial pollution control, environmental regulation, technological level, urbanization, and investment openness are the main factors that affect the improvement of ecological efficiency in the local region. (5) Tourism economic development and urbanization levels have different spatial spillover effects in different periods, while investment openness has obvious positive spillover effects.
