Sensor Fault Diagnostics Using Physics-Informed Transfer Learning Framework
2022
The field of smart health monitoring, intelligent fault detection and diagnosis is expanding dramatically in order to maintain successful operation in many engineering applications. Considering possible fault scenarios that can occur in a system, indicating the type of fault in a sensor is one of the most important and challenging problems in the area of intelligent sensor fault diagnostics. Within this frame of reference, we extended the physics-informed transfer learning framework, first presented previously for a fault cause assignment, to the level of sensor fault diagnostics for a range of different fault scenarios. Hence, the framework is utilized to perform intelligent sensor fault diagnostics for the first time. The underlying dynamics of the reference system are extracted using a completely data-driven methodology and dynamic mode decomposition with control (DMDc) in order to generate time-frequency illustrations of each sample with continuous wavelet transform (CWT). Then, sensor fault diagnostics for bias, drift over time, sine disturbance and increased noise sensor fault scenarios are achieved using the idea of transfer learning with a pre-trained image classification algorithm. The classification results yields a good performance on sensor fault diagnostics with 91.5% training and 84.7% test accuracy along with a fair robustness level with a set of reference benchmark system parameters.

Evapotranspiration Estimation with Small UAVs in Precision Agriculture
2020
Estimating evapotranspiration (ET) has been one of the most critical research areas in agriculture because of water scarcity, the growing population, and climate change. The accurate estimation and mapping of ET are necessary for crop water management. Traditionally, researchers use water balance, soil moisture, weighing lysimeters, or an energy balance approach, such as Bowen ratio or eddy covariance towers to estimate ET. However, these ET methods are point-specific or area-weighted measurements and cannot be extended to a large scale. With the advent of satellite technology, remote sensing images became able to provide spatially distributed measurements. However, the spatial resolution of multispectral satellite images is in the range of meters, tens of meters, or hundreds of meters, which is often not enough for crops with clumped canopy structures, such as trees and vines. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can mitigate these spatial and temporal limitations. Lightweight cameras and sensors can be mounted on the UAVs and take high-resolution images. Unlike satellite imagery, the spatial resolution of the UAV images can be at the centimeter-level. UAVs can also fly on-demand, which provides high temporal imagery. In this study, the authors examined different UAV-based approaches of ET estimation at first. Models and algorithms, such as mapping evapotranspiration at high resolution with internalized calibration (METRIC), the two-source energy balance (TSEB) model, and machine learning (ML) are analyzed and discussed herein. Second, challenges and opportunities for UAVs in ET estimation are also discussed, such as uncooled thermal camera calibration, UAV image collection, and image processing. Then, the authors share views on ET estimation with UAVs for future research and draw conclusive remarks.

In this paper, a generalized fractional-order SEIR model is proposed, denoted by SEIQRP model, which divided the population into susceptible, exposed, infectious, quarantined, recovered and insusceptible individuals and has a basic guiding significance for the prediction of the possible outbreak of infectious diseases like the coronavirus disease in 2019 (COVID-19) and other insect diseases in the future. Firstly, some qualitative properties of the model are analyzed. The basic reproduction number
R
0
is derived. When
R
0
<
1
, the disease-free equilibrium point is unique and locally asymptotically stable. When
R
0
>

, the endemic equilibrium point is also unique. Furthermore, some conditions are established to ensure the local asymptotic stability of disease-free and endemic equilibrium points. The trend of COVID-19 spread in the USA is predicted. Considering the influence of the individual behavior and government mitigation measurement, a modified SEIQRP model is proposed, defined as SEIQRPD model, which is divided the population into susceptible, exposed, infectious, quarantined, recovered, insusceptible and dead individuals. According to the real data of the USA, it is found that our improved model has a better prediction ability for the epidemic trend in the next two weeks. Hence, the epidemic trend of the USA in the next two weeks is investigated, and the peak of isolated cases is predicted. The modified SEIQRP model successfully capture the development process of COVID-19, which provides an important reference for understanding the trend of the outbreak.

2021
A simplified fractional order PID (FOPID) controller is proposed by the suitable definition of the parameter relation with the optimized changeable coefficient. The number of the pending controller parameters is reduced, but all the proportional, integral, and derivative components are kept. The estimation model of the optimal relation coefficient between the controller parameters is established, according to which the optimal FOPID controller parameters can be calculated analytically. A case study is provided, focusing on the practical application of the simplified FOPID controller to a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) speed servo. The dynamic performance of the simplified FOPID control system is tested by motor speed control simulation and experiments. Comparisons are performed between the control systems using the proposed method and those using some other existing methods. According to the simulation and experimental results, the simplified FOPID control system achieves the optimal dynamic performance. Therefore, the validity of the proposed controller structure and tuning method is demonstrated.

A Review of Industrial MIMO Decoupling Control
2019
In recent decades, MIMO (Multi-Input-Multi-Output) systems become more and more widely used in industrial applications. A variety of decoupling control algorithms have been studied in the literature. Therefore, a review of the most extensively applied coupling interaction analysis and decoupler design methods for industrial processes is necessary to be carried out. In this paper, in order to benefit researchers and engineers with different academic backgrounds, the scattered coupling interaction analysis and decoupling algorithms are collected and divided into different categories with their characteristics, application domains and informative comments for selection. Moveover, some frequently concerned problems of decoupling control are also discussed.

This paper focuses on the recent progress in the adoption of active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) in thermal processes as a viable alternative to proportional–integral–derivative (PID), especially in coal-fired power plants. The profound interpretation of this paradigm shift, with backward compatibility, is discussed in detail. A few fundamental issues associated with ADRC’s applications in thermal processes are discussed, such as implementation, tuning, and the structural changes. Examples and case studies are presented, encompassing coal-fired power plants, gas turbines and nuclear power plants, as well as highlighting results of field applications. Also discussed are future research opportunities brought by ADRC’s entry as the baseline control technology in thermal processes.

fractional-order Chua’s system
2021
The purpose of this paper is to explore a novel image encryption algorithm that is developed by combining the fractional-order Chua’s system and the 1D time-fractional diffusion system of order α∈(0,1]. To this end, we first discuss basic properties of the fractional-order Chua’s system and the 1D time-fractional diffusion system. After these, a new spatiotemporal chaos-based cryptosystem is proposed by designing the chaotic sequence of the fractional-order Chua’s system as the initial condition and the boundary conditions of the studied time-fractional diffusion system. It is shown that the proposed image encryption algorithm can gain excellent encryption performance with the properties of larger secret key space, higher sensitivity to initial-boundary conditions, better random-like sequence and faster encryption speed. Efficiency and reliability of the given encryption algorithm are finally illustrated by a computer experiment with detailed security analysis.

A clustering fractional-order grey model in short-term electrical load forecasting
2025
Short-term electrical load series forecast plays an essential role in energy demand management, however power consumption data are non-stationary, nonlinear and multi-dimensional series, leaving prediction a difficult task. Recently, fractional- order partial differential equations are attracting attention as they have been successfully utilized to describe power consumption behaviors in complex electrical systems and power grids. In this paper, a clustering fractional order predictive model called C-FGM is introduced for short-term electrical load forecast missions. The novelty of the C-FGM is that it initiates a parameter α to describe the accumulative weather trends of multiple clustering sub-series, and this parameter is also assigned to a fractional-order partial differential equation to depict the previous power series. Hyper parameters of these equations are then sent to a global optimization algorithm to reduce predictive errors. Simulation results on two electricity datasets demonstrated that our algorithm can learn from datasets hyper parameters inside equations and produce forecast values efficiently. Com- pared with contemporary models such as LSTM and the Transformer, C-FGM clearly achieved a higher accuracy (MAPE from 1.97 to 4.67%, outperforms LSTM whose average MAPE is 4.34% and Transformer whose average MAPE is 5.42%). This satisfactory performance suggests that our data-driven model can be used as an effective tool for real time forecasting missions.

2021
Fractional-order calculus is about the differentiation and integration of non-integer orders. Fractional calculus (FC) is based on fractional-order thinking (FOT) and has been shown to help us to understand complex systems better, improve the processing of complex signals, enhance the control of complex systems, increase the performance of optimization, and even extend the enabling of the potential for creativity. In this article, the authors discuss the fractional dynamics, FOT and rich fractional stochastic models. First, the use of fractional dynamics in big data analytics for quantifying big data variability stemming from the generation of complex systems is justified. Second, we show why fractional dynamics is needed in machine learning and optimal randomness when asking: “is there a more optimal way to optimize?”. Third, an optimal randomness case study for a stochastic configuration network (SCN) machine-learning method with heavy-tailed distributions is discussed. Finally, views on big data and (physics-informed) machine learning with fractional dynamics for future research are presented with concluding remarks.
