Testing the solar paradigm for chromospheric activity in RS CVn binaries: Moderate resolution spectroscopy of solar active regions
Low spatial resolution observations in the range 3900A to 9000A of solar active regions have been compared to similar observations of the active components of three RS CVn binaries. The solar observations were obtained in 1989 with a solar echelle spectrograph and CCD (charge-coupled device) camera on the 6-inch guide telescope at Penn State's Black Moshannon Observatory. The stellar observations were obtained in 1987 and 1988 with the FOE (fiber optic echelle) spectrograph and CCD on the coude feed at Kitt Peak National Observatory. Excess emission profiles of H$\\alpha$, H$\\beta$, and the 8498A and 8542A lines of the Ca II infrared triplet have been analyzed. The ratio of the energy emitted in H$\\alpha$ to H$\\beta$ is much smaller in solar plages than in RS CVn active subgiants. The character of the infrared triplet emission is also different. Analysis of these differences and the phase behavior of the Balmer and infrared triplet lines in the RS CVns suggests that the Balmer emission originates from different emitting structures than the infrared triplet. In agreement with Buzasi (1989), the Balmer emission is produced primarily in prominence-like extended material. The Ca II infrared triplet emission appears to be largely plage-related. Emission in the far wings of the Balmer lines may also arise in plages.
DR. UPHAMS \THOUGHTS ON THE HOLY GOSPLES.\
This work has appeared at a sigficant time. When the former revision and transilation of the Bible appeared (1611) knowledge of the mancscripts of Holy Writ was confined to a few scholars. To-day every reading christian, almost every reader, knows more or less of their names, their number, and their variations.
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MADAME DE STAEL
Whoever has glanced over the brilliant pages of Dr. Stevens' \"History of Methodism,\" will hardly question his capacity for biographical writing. The reader of that work is in continual wonder at the number and variety of remarkable characters prominent in the movement that is the author's theme, and his felicity in delineating them is a constant source of pleasure and of admiration.
DR, STEVENS' PORTRAITURE OF MADAME DE STAEL
In our critique last week upon Dr. Stevens' biography, we referred to his efforts to present his subject in a thoroughly attractive guise to the public, for whom he has admirably restored, it must be conceded, her somewhat obscured image. These efforts are generous--sometimes, indeed, quite chivalric.

Massive bladder inguinal hernia leading to acute urinary retention
Bladder inguinal hernias are infrequently encountered in clinical practice. When present, the patient's main concern may be urinary difficulties such as retention. Careful history and physical examination will reveal the diagnosis in most cases, however, advanced imaging may be required. Emergent surgical consultation is required and urological consultation may be needed for preoperative planning and assistance. We present a case of a patient with almost complete herniation of bladder into left inguinal canal into the left hemiscrotum.
