There is a widely acknowledged gap between research, policy, and practice owing to a lack of capacity to translate and mobilise research results to end-users including policymakers, practitioners, and community members. Acknowledging the divide amongst researchers, policymakers, and practitioners, this conceptual paper seeks to address the following: How do we devise ways to strengthen the research-policy-practice nexus in the education landscape such that research institutions can better attend to the needs of policymakers and practitioners? How can we facilitate greater interaction among researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and other stakeholders to create a common understanding of the challenges, needs, and what works for all stakeholders? To do this, we propose a new approach that employs research as a mechanism for social change and uses the consciousness of the self as a resource for research. More specifically, we develop a framework that facilitates the conditions for the mutual understanding of norms, operational roles, academic rigour, and policy and practice outcomes among all stakeholders. Additionally, this framework seeks to foster increased inter-stakeholder conversations and dialogues to narrow the divide between researchers and policymakers and, correspondingly, improve policy translations from academic research.

This study aims to address the gap in understanding the impact arising from education research, researcher collaborations with stakeholders, and knowledge mobilization activities in Singapore. Eight cases of local research projects are used to understand the phenomenon of research impact in different context-specific settings. The findings reveal differing perceptions of impact among research users and researchers, and cohesion on the factors that contribute to research impact. Drawing from the findings, the authors propose three emerging principles that can enhance research impact efforts: a) frontloading the intended research impact, b) building mutualistic relationships, and c) co-constructing research. The findings and emerging questions from the study contribute to the growing body of scholarship to help researchers and stakeholders strengthen the research-practice-policy nexus.

Motivation, which refers to the force that drives a person to act, has been recognized as a crucial factor in promoting general well-being, along with a multitude of cognitive and psychological outcomes essential to thrive in varied domains and socio-cultural contexts. Motivation researchers have applied the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS), which emerged out of the work of self-determination theorists, in numerous studies that were set in Western contexts. It includes seven dimensions of motivation: amotivation, extrinsic motivation (external regulation, introjection and identification), and intrinsic motivation (to know, to experience stimulation and to accomplish). The purpose of the present study was to examine the cross-cultural applicability of the AMS among Singapore secondary students using both within-network and between-network approaches to construct validation. To examine the within-network aspect of validity, we used confirmatory factor analyses. We also examined the invariance of the AMS across students of different genders and academic abilities. To assess the between-network aspect of validity, we correlated AMS scores with two constructs that are entwined with academic well-being: teacher autonomy support and academic engagement. Our results supported the proposed seven‐factor structure of AMS and this structure was found to be invariant across gender and ability groups. We failed to find empirical support for the simplex structure of ordered AMS subscales. Extrinsic and intrinsic motivation scores were highly positively correlated, while amotivation negatively correlated with academic engagement and teacher autonomy support. Cross-cultural implications are discussed.
