The interpretation of high-resolution remote-sensed data (i.e., LiDAR-derived DTMs, aerial photos and satellite images), compared with ground-penetrating radar surveys, historical cartography, geomorphological surveys and stratigraphic data, allowed us to map a large system of dunes near the Grado-Marano Lagoon (NE Italy) and reconstruct its evolution. Remote sensing investigations allowed us to recognize, map and interpret the sandy reliefs as a field of continental aeolian landforms extending for over 15 km2 and consisting of parabolic dunes elongated in the WSW direction. Radar soundings, together with the description of stratigraphic sections and cores, documented the internal clinostratification of the dunes, supporting their aeolian origin. Radiocarbon dating documents that the dunes formed 22 ka ago, at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum, and probably evolved until the first part of the Late Glacial, when vegetation was scarce. The landforms were fed by the sands blown from a paleochannel of Isonzo River flowing eastward of the dune’s field and blown by Bora. This is a very strong katabatic wind, still characterizing the area, but that was likely much stronger during last glaciation, when it was probably sustained by a stronger wind pattern in Central Europe.

Speleothem record attests to stable environmental conditions during Neanderthal–modern human turnover in southern Italy

The causes of Neanderthal–modern human (MH) turnover are ambiguous. While potential biocultural interactions between the two groups are still little known, it is clear that Neanderthals in southern Europe disappeared about 42 thousand years ago (ka) after cohabitation for ~3,000 years with MH. Among a plethora of hypotheses on Neanderthal extinction, rapid climate changes during the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition (MUPT) are regarded as a primary factor. Here we show evidence for stable climatic and environmental conditions during the MUPT in a region (Apulia) where Neanderthals and MH coexisted. We base our findings on a rare glacial stalagmite deposited between ~106 and ~27 ka, providing the first continuous western Mediterranean speleothem palaeoclimate archive for this period. The uninterrupted growth of the stalagmite attests to the constant availability of rainfall and vegetated soils, while its δ
13
C–δ
18
O palaeoclimate proxies demonstrate that Apulia was not affected by dramatic climate oscillations during the MUPT. Our results imply that, because climate did not play a key role in the disappearance of Neanderthals in this area, Neanderthal–MH turnover must be approached from a perspective that takes into account climatic and environmental conditions favourable for both species.
Unstable and harsh climates have been implicated as partial causes of Neanderthal demise. Here a speleothem palaeoenvironmental record spanning the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition attests to stable and moderate conditions in the Mediterranean during this time suggesting a more complicated picture than previously thought.

The microbiota characterizing huge carbonatic moonmilk structures and its correlation with preserved organic matter

Background
Moonmilk represents complex secondary structures and model systems to investigate the interaction between microorganisms and carbonatic rocks. Grotta Nera is characterized by numerous moonmilk speleothems of exceptional size hanging from the ceiling, reaching over two meters in length. In this work we combined microbiological analyses with analytical pyrolysis and carbon stable isotope data to determine the molecular composition of these complex moonmilk structures as well as the composition of the associated microbiota.
Results
Three moonmilk structures were dissected into the apical, lateral, and core parts, which shared similar values of microbial abundance, richness, and carbon isotopes but different water content, microbiota composition, and organic matter. Moonmilk parts/niches showed higher values of microbial biomass and biodiversity compared to the bedrock (not showing moonmilk development signs) and the waters (collected below dripping moonmilk), indicating the presence of more complex microbial communities linked to carbonate rock interactions and biomineralization processes. Although each moonmilk niche was characterized by a specific microbiota as well as a distinct organic carbon profile, statistical analyses clustered the samples in two main groups, one including the moonmilk lateral part and the bedrock and the other including the core and apical parts of the speleothem. The organic matter profile of both these groups showed two well-differentiated organic carbon groups, one from cave microbial activity and the other from the leaching of vascular plant litter above the cave. Correlation between organic matter composition and microbial taxa in the different moonmilk niches were found, linking the presence of condensed organic compounds in the apical part with the orders
Nitrospirales
and
Nitrosopumilales
, while different taxa were correlated with aromatic, lignin, and polysaccharides in the moonmilk core. These findings are in line with the metabolic potential of these microbial taxa suggesting how the molecular composition of the preserved organic matter drives the microbiota colonizing the different moonmilk niches. Conclusions
The moonmilk deposits can be divided into diverse niches following oxygen and water gradients, which are characterized by specific microbial taxa and organic matter composition originating from microbial activities or deriving from soil and vegetation above the cave. The metabolic capacities allowing the biodegradation of complex polymers from the vegetation above the cave and the use of inorganic nitrogen and atmospheric gases might have fueled the development of complex microbial communities that, by interacting with the carbonatic rock, led to the formation of these massive moonmilk speleothems in Grotta Nera.

Central Mediterranean rainfall varied with high northern latitude temperatures during the last deglaciation

Similarly to the effects of current climate change, the last deglaciation (Termination I) rapidly altered northern latitude temperatures and ice-sheet extent, as well as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. However, it is still unclear how these changes propagated and impacted the central Mediterranean continental rainfall variability. This prevents a full understanding on how global warming will affect Mediterranean areas in the future. Here, we present a high-resolution reconstruction of rainfall changes in the central Mediterranean across Termination I, based on a novel δ 18 O time series from a southern Italian stalagmite. Across Termination I the availability of Atlantic moisture varied in response to northern latitude temperature increases (decreases) and ice-sheet decreases (increases), promoting a higher (lower) intensity of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, and resulting in a relatively wetter (drier) climate in the Mediterranean. In the light of future warming, this study emphasises the role of high-latitude climate changes in causing rainfall variation in highly populated Mediterranean areas.

Evaporite karst in Italy: a review

Although outcropping rarely in Italy, evaporite (gypsum and anhydrite) karst has been described in detail since the early 20th century. Gypsum caves are now known from almost all Italian regions, but are mainly localised along the northern border of the Apennine chain (Emilia Romagna and Marche), Calabria, and Sicily, where the major outcrops occur. Recently, important caves have also been discovered in the underground gypsum mines in Piedmont. During the late 80s and 90s several multidisciplinary studies were carried out in many gypsum areas, resulting in a comprehensive overview, promoting further research in these special karst regions. More recent and detailed studies focused on the gypsum areas of Emilia-Romagna and Sicily. Sinkholes related to Permian-Triassic gypsum have been studied in Friuli Venezia Giulia. This article reviews the state of the art regarding different aspects of evaporite karst in Italy focusing on the main new results.

Petrographical and geochemical changes in Bosnian stalagmites and their palaeo-environmental significance

Detailed petrographic observations have been coupled with trace element and δ^sup 13^C - δ^sup 13^O analyses in order to investigate their dynamics in two Holocene Bosnian speleothems. The potential of this multiproxy approach in providing a means to extract palaeo-environmental information from stalagmites whose stable isotope signals are noisy and without obvious trends has been tested. The studied stalagmites are mostly characterized by columnar microcrystalline fabric. At the sub-millimetre scale of lamination, different microcrystalline columnar sub-types (open and closed) have been detected and classified on the basis of the observed porosity and the crystallite size. The presence of variations in crystallite arrangement at the lamina scale suggests the occurrence of small-scale environmental changes recorded in the studied samples. A positive correlation was found found between Mg concentration, δ^sup 13^C and fabric variations, while a negative correlation relates those parameters with Sr concentration. Both δ^sup 13^C and fabric changes appear to be directly related to changes in hydrology. The detailed observation of calcite fabrics combined with stable isotope and trace element profiles allowed for the interpretation of the conditions under which the speleothems were deposited.

Underground Geodiversity of Italian Show Caves: an Overview

About a fifth of the Italian territory is characterised by the presence of soluble rocks, consisting mainly of limestone and dolostone but also of marble and evaporite rocks (gypsum). More than 50,000 natural caves are currently known in this country, a number that is constantly increasing thanks to speleological exploration. Less than 1% of these caves are equipped for visits, and only 64 can be defined as real show (tourist) caves. In the latter, it is necessary to buy an entrance ticket, visits take place only accompanied by a guide, and the underground trail is equipped with paths, walkways and, generally, lighting systems. The Italian show caves expose a great geodiversity and biodiversity, often accompanied by a considerable historical and/or archaeological interest. The underground geodiversity of Italian show caves is related to the variety of lithologies characterising this territory and to the geomorphological and geodynamic processes that have been active during different geological periods. Important scientific research has taken place in many of these caves, and several of these fragile environments are monitored continuously to verify their environmental conditions.

Microbial and Geochemical Variability in Sediments and Biofilms from Italian Gypsum Caves

In Europe, several gypsum karst regions occur among which the gypsum karsts located in Emilia-Romagna (UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023) and Sicily are notable. The sediments, spring water microbial aggregates, and wall biofilms from three caves, Re Tiberio, Befana (Emilia-Romagna), and the Sicilian Santa Ninfa, have been studied from a microbiological and geochemical point of view. The samples of wall biofilms from gypsum caves were exclusively composed of
Bacteria
, while the sediments showed negligible abundances of
Archaea
. The two most abundant phyla in most sediments and biofilms were
Actinomycetota
and
Pseudomonadota
, whereas the microbial aggregates floating in the spring waters of Befana Cave showed a deviation from the typical abundance pattern as
Campylobacterota
replaced
Actinomycetota
, and the abundances of
Bacteroidota
and
Desulfobacterota
were high. The most abundant genus in the wall biofilms was
Crossiella
(
Actinomycetota
), but it was absent in the water aggregates collected in Befana Cave. The abundances of
Crossiella
in the cave sediments were very low. The dominant genera in Befana microbial aggregates showed different abundances and microbial composition when compared with the previously studied Frasassi and Fetida thermal sulfuric acid caves, located in Central and South Italy, respectively, suggesting that the community composition of the microbial aggregates is specific for each cave and related to the geochemistry of the sulfidic spring. Also, a different microbial community composition was found in Befana water aggregates with respect to the wall biofilms from Befana and Santa Ninfa caves. In the case of sediments, they significantly clustered together indicating that the microbial communities associated with sediments are similar, independently from the cave and possible other environmental parameters.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are an important group of professionals exposed to biological risk during their work activities. So, the aim of this study is to perform a survey on the knowledge, attitude and behaviour of Italian HCWs towards the vaccinations recommended by the Ministry of Health. A cross-sectional study was carried out during the period September 2014–August 2015 in the Lazio region. The study was conducted by recruiting HCWs and biomedical students. The sample was comprised of 571 responders, of whom 12.4% were physicians, 18.9% were nurses, 34.3% were other HCW, and 34.3% were biomedical students (medical and nurses students). Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is perceived as a risk for personal health by 457 (80%) participants; TB is also worrying (434; 76%). Moreover, HBV (70.9%) and tuberculosis (TB) (79.2%) are perceived as a risk for health, while influenza is not considered so by most participants (46.2%). There is an underestimation of the role of influenza, perceived as a risk for 137 respondents (24%). The vaccination rate among these HCWs is highest for Hepatitis B virus (HBV) (82%), and lowest for influenza (28.5%) and varicella (40.3%). The vast majority of responders are in favour of HBV (77.8%) and TB (64.8%) vaccines. For other vaccinations there is less interest (between 33% and 40% for measles, mumps, rubella, pertussis and influenza). This study shows that knowledge of recommended occupational vaccinations is insufficient in HCWs, with few exceptions represented by HBV and TB. There is a need for novel approaches in this field, with the aim of enhancing vaccine coverage among HCW.
