The impact of hedonic social media use during microbreaks on employee resources recovery

This study investigates the impact of social media-related microbreaks on the resource recovery of employees. Specifically, we examined whether or not the brief, hedonic use of social media through algorithmic videos could fully replenish resources, such as vigor and fatigue, that are depleted after performing clerical tasks. We also compared this form of recovery to other established microbreak activities. We used a pre-registered, mixed-method experimental design to collect data from 308 employees. A series of mixed-method ANOVA tests complemented by quadratic linear contrast terms and post-hoc analyses were performed to test hypotheses and address research questions. The findings indicate that although social media microbreaks offer a certain degree of resource replenishment, they do not provide full recovery, particularly regarding fatigue. Social media facilitate a reasonable psychological detachment but fall short in other recovery experiences. Notably, exposure to nature yielded more beneficial results. The study contributes novel insights to a field primarily focused on the negative impacts of excessive social media use and suggests that rational and brief usage can be advantageous for employee well-being.

Job insecurity and emotional disturbance of Polish employees during pandemic COVID-19

Background: The pandemic, as an event that is new and dangerous to the health and life of the population, has put employees at risk of losing their job and experiencing deteriorating working and employment conditions. In this situation, authors were particularly concerned with the extent to which job insecurity (both quantitative and qualitative) contributed to the deterioration of workers' well-being. Material and Methods: The study was carried out on 382 Polish employees in April and May 2020. The following research tools were used: the Job Insecurity in Pandemic Scale by Chirkowska-Smolak and Czumak and the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21) by Levibond and Levibond. Results: The quantitative and qualitative job insecurity were significant predictors of depression and stress, but they did not explain anxiety symptoms. The scope of the explained variance of these negative emotional states by concerns related to work and employment was not large (from 11% to 17.6%). The moderating role of perceived employability was confirmed only in the case of the relationship between qualitative job insecurity and depression, as well as quantitative job insecurity and stress. However, the increase in the explained variance was very small. Conclusions: Uncertainty related to the maintenance of employment and concerns about the deterioration of working conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on emotional disturbances of employees, but they only explained some of the variance of depression and stress and did not affect the perceived level of anxiety. The smaller role of economic stress in the emergence of negative emotional states could be associated with the occurrence of much more serious threats to the health and life of the population in this period. The very low level of unemployment in Poland, which remained at a similar level throughout the pandemic despite the catastrophic forecasts of economists, could also have played an important role. Construction and validation of the Areas of Academic Life Scale to measure organizational risk factors for student burnout

Academic burnout poses a challenge to the educational process. Higher education institutions have responsibilities similar to the ones of management in business settings. These institutions are responsible for creating conditions conducive to development and, as such, may be interested in verifying the presence of student burnout and pinpointing its causes. The purpose of this study was to answer these needs and develop a scale to measure the effect of organizational factors that may predict student burnout.
This paper reports the results of a study conducted on a sample of Polish students (N = 659) to construct and validate a multidimensional measure of organizational factors impacting academic burnout, focusing on students. For background purposes and as a starting point, the authors used the concept of the areas of worklife by Ch. Maslach and M. Leiter, who identified 6 areas of the work environment that affect the relationships people develop with their work, i.e., workload, control, reward, community, fairness, and values.
The authors assessed the factor structure, reliability, and construct validity and performed confirmatory factor analysis of the new scale to measure 6 areas of academic life. Given the results of this study, the scale can be recommended as an adequate tool to measure organizational (academic) factors of burnout in students.
The authors have validated the final scale, which can be used to advance the understanding of the academic burnout phenomenon. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2023;36(6):798-811.

Oceny moralne w rozumowaniu sędziowskim

W artykule stawiamy dwa pytania: czy formułowanie przez sędziów ocen moralnych wymaga od nich posiadania szczególnych kompetencji moralnych oraz czy rozumowanie moralne ma charakter rozumowania racjonalnego? Odpowiadając na pierwsze pytanie, uważamy, że w sytuacji formułowania ocen moralnych sędziowie nie posiadają jakichś szczególnych kompetencji moralnych do rozstrzygania dylematów moralnych. Nie ma podstaw, by sądzić, że moralne eksperymenty myślowe, które nieodłącznie pojawiają się w pracy umysłowej sędziego, pozwalają przyjąć, iż rozumowanie sędziów jest bardziej moralne/ lepsze moralnie aniżeli rozumowanie innych podmiotów działających w sferze publicznej. Odpowiadając na drugie pytanie, uważamy, że skoro zazwyczaj ludzie są nieświadomi tego, co wpływa na ich oceny moralne, można przyjąć, że również sędziowie mogą być nieświadomi tego, co powoduje ich osądy moralne, błędnie przy tym przyjmując, że racjonalnie podejmują decyzje. Intuicje pełnią ważną rolę w dokonywaniu ocen moralnych również w przypadku osób wykonujących zawody prawnicze, od których to oczekuje się, by opierały się na racjonalnym rozumowaniu oraz obiektywnym rozpatrywaniu różnych argumentów.

Does work engagement burn out? The person-job fit and levels of burnout and engagement in work

This research (N=943) examines the relationship between burnout, work engagement, and organizational factors that play an important role in the strain process (development of burnout), and in the motivational process (work engagement). The aim of the study is to test the relationships of burnout and work engagement, on the one hand, and organizational factors—job demands (workload) and job resources (control, relations with co-workers and superiors, rewards, fairness, and values)—on the other. The results of the analysis call into doubt whether burnout and work engagement are opposite poles of the same dimension, or whether they are independent, though correlated, constructs. Exhaustion and vigour are not the extremes of the same energy dimension, but in the case of cynicism and dedication, the situation is not so clear. It can be said that we are not dealing with the burnout of engagement, but rather with a change in attitude to work (increasing cynicism) on the part of people not suited to their jobs.

According to Maslach and Leiter, burnout syndrome consists of three elements: exhaustion, cynicism, and a sense of ineffectiveness experienced by individuals in the work environment. However, burnout does not only apply to professional activity but can also be experienced by students pursuing higher education. This is important because the consequences of student burnout can be related to students’ mental and physical health. Until recently, the dominant diagnostic trend in the studies of burnout syndrome was based on a variable-focused approach. This approach focuses primarily on identifying subgroups in the population and presents different configurations of the various dimensions of burnout. However, there is emerging research using a person-centered approach and including the analysis of latent profiles to study professional and student burnout. This approach allows us to isolate subgroups of individuals in the study sample who have a similar burnout pattern. It focuses on the differences between individuals, which helps us to look at the phenomenon of professional burnout from a different perspective and shows the individuality of its experience. Our research aimed at identifying latent profiles, was conducted on a sample of 1519 Polish students, and partly confirms reports from other countries. We identified four profiles: low burnout, moderate below-average burnout, moderate above-average burnout, and very high burnout groups.

The factorial validity of the Maslach Burnout Inventory: Student Survey (MBI-SS) in Poland

This paper explores the psychometric properties of the Polish adaptation of the MBI-SS questionnaire, which measures academic burnout in students. The factorial structure of the tool was examined, and its validity was evaluated using a sample from Polish state universities (N=935). Findings suggest that the MBI-SS possesses strong psychometric parameters. Data supports the tool's 3-factor structure and internal consistency. However, there are reservations regarding one item (MBI_6). Consequently, the 15- item version of the MBI-SS is recommended as a suitable tool for assessing burnout in Polish students.

The Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey: validation across different occupational groups in Poland

This paper concerns the psychometric evaluation of the Polish version of a self-report questionnaire to measure burnout. Although the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) is the most commonly employed measure of burnout, researchers have been troubled by some of its psychometric limitations. The aim of this study is to examine the MBI-GS factor structure in three occupational groups (both within the human services sector and elsewhere), and to evaluate its reliability (internal consistency). In evaluating factorial validity, we carried out an explanatory analysis and a number of confirmatory analyses (using the total database and the three occupational groups). An additional aim was to explore the relationships between biographic characteristics (gender, age, work experience, employment level, and occupation) and burnout. The results of the confirmatory analyses show us that all three models fit the data almost acceptably, both in the total sample (N=998) and in the separate occupational groups, and that the fit of the three-factor solution appears to be somewhat better than that of the one- and two-factor solutions. When the initial model failed to fit the data well, we had to eliminate two items with weak reliability. The results then confirmed the factorial validity of the MBI-GS—as expected, the MBI-GS consists of three scales that are moderately correlate.

The aim of the study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Organizational Loyalty Scale. 441 employees from different organizations were the subjects of conducted research. Organizational Loyalty Scale was found to be a reliable measure with good internal consistency. The reliability of this tool achieved Cronbach’s alfa coefficient of 0.87. Factor analysis confirmed the two dimensional structure of this measure. Distinguished dimensions of loyalty include Caring for the positive image of, and Propensity to sacrifice oneself for, the organization. A statistically significant positive correlation between organizational loyalty and age, as well as tenure, was noted. Gender did not differentiate participants in relation to organizational loyalty. Presented results thus provide further evidence that the aforementioned measure has good psychometric properties and is therefore recommended for use by researchers studying the concept of organizational loyalty.
