The sword breaks, the song continues: Literacy in the Rahbani brothers' work of art
This research attempts to show that a total work of art, or Gesamtkunstwerk, of the magnitude of the Rahbani brothers', makes a society more literate by: (1) Appealing to the largest possible section of the population, (2) Releasing the imagination of a people, (3) Empowering the people who come in contact with such a work of art. Thus, this research explores how the Rahbani brothers' work, on stage and in song, broke many existing limitations (such as linguistic) and created a world and a language that affected Arabic and Levantine literacy for ages to come. It is an attempt to explore if and how a work of art could become the main motif in creating a new discourse within a language and become an essential component of the literacy process in the society where this language is spoken. That will also allow us to examine how politics and social change could be affected by this art. It is my hope to question any linguistic hegemony in identifying \"what is literacy\" and \"what is literate\"; and to show that if a work of art fulfills the three elements stated above, this work can then educate, affect and influence the life of people as much as reading and writing.
