تعتبر قصيدة البحار العجوز من قبل الكثير من دارسي الأدب والنقاد أنها المثال الكلاسيكي على الشعر الرومانسي الإنجليزي فهي تغوص في أعماق البحار العجوز أثناء تجواله وتلامس ذاته عن قرب لتكشف للقارئ إحساسه العميق بالإكتئاب والعزلة ,يتضمن الكتاب ترجمة أمينة لسبعة أجزاء من القصيدة مع نبذة عن سيرة الشاعر صاموئيل تايلور كولديدج كما وردت في النسخة الأصلية من دائرة معارف البيوغرافيا العالمية.
