Solid-State Lighting: Toward Smart and Ultraefficient Materials, Devices, Lamps, and Systems
This chapter provides a brief history of solid‐state lighting (SSL): key materials and device breakthroughs; the state‐of‐the‐art device and lamp architectures that those breakthroughs have enabled; and the dominant system applications that those device and lamp architectures have enabled. The state‐of‐the‐art SSL architecture is based on blue light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) combined with green, yellow, and/or red phosphors, the so‐called PC‐LED architecture. This chapter discusses the general characteristics of smart, ultraefficient SSL and the potential systems applications of such lighting. It discusses the macroeconomic and human productivity benefits of such lighting. SSL has made tremendous progress over the past decade, with the potential to make much more progress over the coming decades.
