Recent Advances in Studying Air Quality and Health Effects of Shipping Emissions
The increase of global commerce and tourism makes the shipping sector an important contributor of atmospheric particles and gaseous pollutants. These have impacts on both health and climate, especially in populated coastal areas. Maritime activities could be an important driver for economic and social development, however, they are also an environmental pressure. Several policies were implemented in the last decades, at local/regional or international levels, mainly focused on reducing the content of sulphur in marine fuels. The last international IMO-2020 regulation was enforced on 1 January 2020. This work reviews some recent studies on this topic delineating current knowledge of the impacts of maritime emissions on air quality and health and the future projections relative to the benefits of the implementation of the new IMO-2020 regulation. In addition, future perspectives for further mitigation strategies are discussed.

Airborne concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 in indoor community environments in Italy
COVID-19 pandemic raised a debate regarding the role of airborne transmission. Information regarding virus-laden aerosol concentrations is still scarce in community indoors and what are the risks for general public and the efficiency of restriction policies. This work investigates, for the first time in Italy, the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in air samples collected in different community indoors (one train station, two food markets, one canteen, one shopping centre, one hair salon, and one pharmacy) in three Italian cities: metropolitan city of Venice (NE of Italy), Bologna (central Italy), and Lecce (SE of Italy). Air samples were collected during the maximum spread of the second wave of pandemic in Italy (November and December 2020). All collected samples tested negative for the presence of SARS-CoV-2, using both real-time RT-PCR and ddPCR, and no significant differences were observed comparing samples taken with and without customers. Modelling average concentrations, using influx of customers’ data and local epidemiological information, indicated low values (i.e. < 0.8 copies m −3 when cotton facemasks are used and even lower for surgical facemasks). The results, even if with some limitations, suggest that the restrictive policies enforced could effectively reduce the risk of airborne transmissions in the community indoor investigated, providing that physical distance is respected.
High-Time-Resolution Measurements of Equivalent Black Carbon in an Urban Background Site of Lecce, Italy
Carbonaceous aerosols represent a significant component of atmospheric aerosol, with implications for climate and human health. The recent EU Directive 2024/2881 highlights the need to monitor emerging pollutants like black carbon more effectively. This study presents an brief field campaign at an urban background site aimed at characterizing carbonaceous aerosols. Daily samples of PM10 and PM2.5 were analyzed using a Sunset thermal-optical analyzer to determine organic and elemental carbon (OC, EC), while real-time equivalent black carbon (eBC) was measured with three independent instruments: MAAP, AE33, and Giano BC1. Total carbon (TC) was monitored using an online TCA08 thermo-catalytic analyzer. The average concentration of PM10 was 17.1 µg/m3 and 10.4 µg/m3 for PM2.5. On average, OC and EC represented 16.5% and 3.6% of PM10 mass, and 22.6% and 5.5% of PM2.5. SOC accounted for 36% of OC. The in situ Mass Absorption Cross-section (MAC), recalculated for the ECO site, was between 8.0 and 12.2 m2/g. eBC concentrations were modulated by the daily evolution of the planetary boundary-layer height and combustion sources. The apportionment of eBC was 65% from fossil fuel and 35% from biomass burning. Biomass-burning emissions were further confirmed by optical measurements, with BrC contributing 35% of absorption at 370 nm.
Shipping and Air Quality in Italian Port Cities: State-of-the-Art Analysis of Available Results of Estimated Impacts
Populated coastal areas are exposed to emissions from harbour-related activities (ship traffic, loading/unloading, and internal vehicular traffic), posing public health issues and environmental pressures on climate. Due to the strategic geographical position of Italy and the high number of ports along coastlines, an increasing concern about maritime emissions from Italian harbours has been made explicit in the EU and IMO (International Maritime Organization, London, UK) agenda, also supporting the inclusion in a potential Mediterranean emission control area (MedECA). This work reviews the main available outcomes concerning shipping (and harbours’) contributions to local air quality, particularly in terms of concentration of particulate matter (PM) and gaseous pollutants (mainly nitrogen and sulphur oxides), in the main Italian hubs. Maritime emissions from literature and disaggregated emission inventories are discussed. Furthermore, estimated impacts to air quality, obtained with dispersion and receptor modeling approaches, which are the most commonly applied methodologies, are discussed. Results show a certain variability that suggests the necessity of harmonization among methods and input data in order to compare results. The analysis gives a picture of the effects of this pollution source, which could be useful for implementing effective mitigation strategies at a national level.
Long-Term Integrated Measurements of Aerosol Microphysical Properties to Study Different Combustion Processes at a Coastal Semi-Rural Site in Southern Italy
Biomass burning processes affect many semi-rural areas in the Mediterranean, but there is a lack of long-term datasets focusing on their classification, obtained by monitoring carbonaceous particle concentrations and optical properties variations. To address this issue, a campaign to measure equivalent black carbon (eBC) and particle number size distributions (0.3–10 μm) was carried out from August 2019 to November 2020 at a coastal semi-rural site in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy. Long-term datasets were useful for aerosol characterization, helping to clearly identify traffic as a constant eBC source. For a shorter period, PM2.5 mass concentrations were also measured, allowing the estimation of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC), and chemical and SEM (scanning electron microscope) analysis of aerosols collected on filters. This multi-instrumental approach enabled the discrimination among different biomass burning (BB) processes, and the analysis of three case studies related to domestic heating, regional smoke plume transport, and a local smoldering process. The AAE (Ångström absorption exponent) daily pattern was characterized as having a peak late in the morning and mean hourly values that were always higher than 1.3.
An Overview of the Automated and On-Line Systems to Assess the Oxidative Potential of Particulate Matter
Recent years have seen a significant increase in the scientific literature related to various methods for analyzing oxidative potential (OP) of atmospheric particulate matter (PM). The presence of several types of PM, differing chemical and physical properties, released by both anthropogenic and natural sources, leads to numerous health issues in living organisms and represents an attractive target for air quality monitoring. Therefore, several studies have focused on developing rapid and self-operative tests, employing different target molecules to assess OP of atmospheric aerosols as well as unique approaches to overcome some of the most common laboratory-related issues in this kind of analysis. This work provides an overview of online and automated systems, as well as a broad picture of the state-of-art of the various devices and methods developed on this topic over the last two decades. Moreover, representative studies on this subject will be discussed, analyzing the advantages and drawbacks of the developed automated techniques.
Oxidative Potential, Cytotoxicity, and Intracellular Oxidative Stress Generating Capacity of PM10: A Case Study in South of Italy
Long and short-term exposure to atmospheric particulate matter (PM) has detrimental effects on human health. The effective mechanisms leading to PM toxicity are still not fully understood, even if it is known that physical-chemical properties, strongly influenced by sources and atmospheric processes, are known to play an important role. In this work, PM10 samples were collected, at an urban background site in southern Italy, to determine cytotoxicity (using MTT test on A549 cells), genotoxicity (using the comet assay), and intracellular oxidative stress on A549 cells exposed for 24 h to aqueous extracts of PM10 samples. Organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) content of PM10 and acellular determination of oxidative potential with DTT assay were performed to compare results of acellular and cellular biological assays. Cellular (OSGCV and MTTV) and acellular (OPDTTV) outcomes, normalized in volume, are well correlated (statistically significant results) with carbon content suggesting that combustion sources play an important role in determining cellular oxidative stress and cytotoxicity of PM10. Even if the number of data is limited, genotoxicity results are well correlated (Pearson r > 0.95) with OSGCV and MTTV, and a weaker, but statistically significant correlation was observed with OPDTTV. OSGCV is well correlated with the cell mortality observed with the MTTV test and a lower, but still statistically significant correlation is observed between MTTV and OPDDTV. A statistically significant correlation was found between OPDTTV and OSGCV results. When the outcomes of the cellular and acellular assay are compared normalized in mass (i.e., intrinsic values), the correlations become significantly weaker suggesting that the different sources acting on the site produces particulate matter with different toxicological potential influencing differently the biological tests studied.
