Potential implications of rising sea level on American Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus) spawning beaches in two Florida counties
2025
Coastlines support a diversity of wildlife and are used as spawning sites for many species. Though, as sea levels rise, many coastlines will be inundated, affecting species that live or nest in these habitats. The American Horseshoe Crab ( Limulus polyphemus ) requires specific environmental conditions for optimal egg development in coastal habitats. This study used reports of horseshoe crab sightings in two Florida counties to identify characteristics associated with their spawning habitats. A 0.6-meter-wide shoreline polygon was created in ArcGIS Pro and each habitat type within the polygon was identified. Using sea-level rise scenarios for 2040, 2070, and 2100, the percentage of habitat loss within these spawning polygons was predicted. In Pinellas County, spawning was predominantly associated with sheltered tidal flats and mangroves. In Brevard County, spawning was most often associated with fine- to medium-grain sand beaches and mangroves. These results demonstrated that each sea-level rise scenario projects a change in habitat area within the shoreline polygons, most notably in the 2040 projection. By 2100 in Pinellas County, 96.3% of mangroves and 87.4% of sheltered tidal flats within the shoreline polygons were predicted to be lost or changed to a different habitat type. In Brevard County by 2100, 98% of fine- to medium-grain sand beaches and 94.8% of mangroves within the shoreline polygons were predicted to be lost or changed to a different habitat type.

Racism is a stressor that contributes to racial/ethnic disparities in mental and physical health and to variations in these outcomes within racial and ethnic minority groups. The aim of this paper is to identify and discuss key issues in the study of individual-level strategies for coping with interpersonal racism. We begin with a discussion of the ways in which racism acts as a stressor and requires the mobilization of coping resources. Next, we examine available models for describing and conceptualizing strategies for coping with racism. Third, we discuss three major forms of coping: racial identity development, social support seeking and anger suppression and expression. We examine empirical support for the role of these coping strategies in buffering the impact of racism on specific health-related outcomes, including mental health (i.e., specifically, self-reported psychological distress and depressive symptoms), self-reported physical health, resting blood pressure levels, and cardiovascular reactivity to stressors. Careful examination of the effectiveness of individual-level coping strategies can guide future interventions on both the individual and community levels.

IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: 'UNITED 93', Painful to watch, still
2006
This movie is done about as well as anyone could do a movie about the heroic passengers who hijacked the hijackers. The argument is whether it's \"too soon.\" My question: Too soon for what? To make a movie about a national tragedy with the potential to be hugely profitable? Let's be real: Nothing is sacred in our society. Do I think a movie about those passengers \"needs\" to be made? No. Am I surprised? Yes ... that it took this long. \"United 93\" asks more questions than it answers. You might learn a thing or two about the events of 9/11, but no one watching this film needs to see it to become more knowledgeable. Despite the scope of this film, it's no more of a cash-grab than other 9/11 films and books. Figuring out whether to see \"United 93\" essentially depends on what you want from it. In terms of providing knowledge and insight into the event, \"United 93\" may be too soon. For people who seek catharsis through film, it's not.

IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: 'DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES' DIRTY LAUNDRY GAME, This game is a washout
2006
With 17 out of 32 spaces on the board designated \"lose a turn,\" that's all I did. When my roommate and I actually landed on one of the playing spaces, we were overjoyed, but the trivia questions were impossible. To answer correctly, we would've had to TiVo every episode of the first season and memorize mundane details, such as the name of the club on a book of matches found in Andrew's room. A \"Lost\" trivia game, on the other hand, is a cash cow waiting to be milked. I knew it would be impossible to convince my friends to come over just to play the \"Desperate Housewives\" game, so I stowed it in my bag and broke it out at the bar. I thought it would make a decent drinking game, but the questions were too hard (even for the most devoted fans) and the \"secrets\" were too obscure. People may enjoy watching the show, but that doesnt mean theyll enjoy playing this show-themed game. I did learn an invaluable lesson - board games and bars are not a winning combination. Watching \"Party of Five\" is like eating Gummy Bears - a fun snack, but pop too many and you might get a stomachache. While I had a few laughs listening to [Jennifer Love Hewitt] reflect on her teenage crush on [Scott Wolf], I felt like I was watching a Lifetime \"Intimate Portrait.\" I wished that other actors (\"Lost\" boy Matthew Fox and my favorite mean girl, Lacey Chabert) had gotten a slice of the skinny DVD extras - and previews for random movies I've already seen are not \"special\" features. I would never purchase a \"Party of Five\" DVD. It's the kind of show you get caught watching on Lifetime on a Sunday afternoon. I wouldn't recommend the DVD to avid \"POF\" fans either. Besides a dull interview with Jennifer Love Hewitt, the bonus material includes commentary by the cast as the episodes play. It's funny at times, but mostly distracting because you're straining to hear and watch the episode as the actors talk over it. PHOTOS - 1) Jennifer Love Hewitt and Scott Wolf don't keep you quite as hooked as they used to. 2) [Dan Contrada] 3) [Danielle Dellilo] 4) [Laurie Cedilnik] 5) [Marisa D'Agosto] 6) [Karen Berg]; 7) \"Party of Five\" DVD

IMPULSE! YOUR REVIEWS: 'THE GAUNTLET II', Another excuse to party
2005
[Laura Radloff] says: As a casual \"Real World\" and \"Road Rules\" viewer, I was only midly interested in watching \"The Gaunlet II.\" Now I'm more convinced the series is just an excuse for the cast to pretend they're at a life-long fraternity party. Don't get me wrong, I understand why these former celebs go on \"The Gauntlet\" (money, hooking up, free vacation in the tropics), I just don't get why anyone would want to watch. The premiere episode showed a savage \"King of the Hill\" battle with bruises and bloodshed. If this was any inkling of the physicality to come, the reality stars are going to have to work hard for their money. This series, as usual, is full of drama- loving beauties and hot-tempered meatheads just waiting to stir the pot. It'll be interesting to see who's fighting, who's crying, and who's getting it on. I know I'll be watching. Photos 1) Laura Radloff. 2) [Dan Contrada]. 3) [Robert Plaut]. 4) [Joe La Puma]. 5) Danielle Dillilo. 6) [Paul Shapiro]. 7) Cast of \"The Gauntlet 11\" 8) Taking Back Sunday
