Development of Chemical Solution Deposited Lead Zirconate Titanate Ferroelectric Thin Films for Non-planar Substrates
This thesis focuses on the development of a technique to deposit chemical solution de- rived thin films of the ferroelectric material lead zirconate titanate (PZT) onto non-planar substrates. PZT is a widely researched ferroelectric material for many thin film applications due to the magnitude of its dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. Chemical solution deposition (CSD) is a low cost, low capital method of depositing thin films which also allows for intimate mixing of precursors, leading to homogeneous final films. Applying CSD methods to non-planar substrates would allow for these quality films to be deposited on the three-dimensional structures which make up many devices that implement ferroelectric materials. Ferroelectric PZT films were fabricated through a chelate route and deposited through both spin coating and dip coating methods. Conductive lanthanum nickelate (LNO) thin films were successfully created through a CSD method to be used as a bottom electrode for the PZT films. The PZT and LNO films on flat substrates were characterized through various techniques to verify their quality. Once quality films were achieved, the films could be applied to non-planar substrates. Various methods of depositing chemical solution derived films onto non-planar substrates were explored and developed to account for specific material, size and processing constraints. The processes were optimized to deposit ferroelectric PZT films onto a specific silicon wedge substrate. Electron microscopy revealed that the techniques allowed for a successful depo- sition of the films onto the wedge substrate. These techniques could be applied to various non-planar substrates with similar constraints.

Effect of Metal Speciation in fly ash on Environmentally Persistent Free Radical Formation
Waste incineration and Superfund sites lead to the formation of pollutants harmful to both the environment and human health. Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals (EPFRs) are a class of newly discovered radical pollutants known to form on combustion by-products such as fly ash and particulate matter. EPFRs are rapidly gaining attention for their harmful effects on the environment and human health. Previous research has shown the formation of EPFRs through surface-mediated reactions with transition metal-oxides on particulates. The work presented in this dissertation explores the relationship between fly ash composition and EPFR formation.Fly ash production occurs from combustion systems, namely waste incinerators. Waste composition varies widely throughout the globe, which changes the composition of fly ash and its associated pollutants. In Chapter 4, the thorough characterization of real world fly ashes from municipal and medical waste incinerators is explored and includes EPFR concentrations, elemental composition and particle characterization. EPFR variability found among real world fly ashes is heavily influenced by fly ash composition. Based on the findings from the real world fly ashes, a model system was developed to further understand the role of sulfur in the formation of EPFRs and is described in Chapter 5. Sulfur species, in the form of ammonium sulfate and sulfur dioxide, have a major influence on EPFR formation.In Chapter 6, a remediation method for mining influenced water using Chitin and sulfate-reducing bacteria is presented. The work done at LSU confirmed sulfur reduction, which indicated a successful remediation of heavy metals and sulfates from the water.

Finding can be worse than losing
Today I went to run errands in a mall. Errands complete, I returned to the car reached into my bag and couldn't find my car keys. I sat down on a bench and went carefully through my purse, pulling everything out and then finally turning the bag over to shake it out. Then I went through my pant pockets. No keys. I knew I must have had the keys at some point, because I managed to drive myself to the mall. I peered into the car window hoping to see the keys dangling from the ignition. Nope. I got onto my hands and knees and looked under the car. Nope again. The staff in one of the stores offered to call mall security in order to see if anyone turned them into lost and found. I was standing there doing my \"I'm really annoyed here\" stance, tapping one foot, while the security guard took my statement so they could put out the mall equivalent of an Amber Alert on my keys. My cell rang. As I pulled the phone from my inside jacket pocket, out fell my car keys. The security guard, three salesgirls, one nosy shopper and I all stood in a circle and looked down at the keys laying there on the floor, limp and unresponsive. The keys didn't look like they had any remorse over all the excitement they had caused.
I'm an automobile idol in my own car
I spend my time in the car daydreaming that I am going or coming from a more exciting place than work. Take yesterday evening as an example; I was on my way home engaging in a particular daydream where I achieve literary greatness. I hobnob with famous author types at swanky literary parties. My agent calls me to tell me that my book has sold a zillion copies and that we're going to Maui to celebrate and we'll be served fruity drinks by a cabana boy that looks like Johnny Depp. In the midst of this daydream, right around where I accept a major literary award, the song \"Fame\" by Irene Cara comes on the radio, which perfectly fits with my daydream so I sing along.
