Long term evaluation of factors influencing the association of ixodid ticks with birds in Central Europe, Hungary
Birds play a crucial role in disseminating ticks that carry pathogens of high veterinary-medical importance. The aim of this study was to analyze data of a long-term tick collection from birds at a single stop-over site in Central Europe, Hungary. Over eight years (2015–2022) 5833 ticks (ten species) were collected from 2395 tick-infested birds. The most abundant species were Ixodes ricinus (n = 3971) and Haemaphysalis concinna (n = 1706). Ixodes ricinus nymphs and larvae were the most frequently occurring on resident and short-distance migratory birds with forest habitat but Ha. concinna was the most abundant species on reed-associated, long-distance migrants. Haemaphysalis concinna occurred mostly on birds feeding above the ground level, while I. ricinus predominated on ground feeding birds. Infestation with I. ricinus nymphs always peaked in the first half of the year, in contrast to larvae which were more abundant on avian hosts in the autumn. At the same time, Ha. concinna larvae and nymphs had their peak numbers in the summer. This is the first long-term study on the tick infestation of birds in Central Europe. The study shows that, migration distance, habitat type, and typical feeding level of birds, as well as characteristics of tick life cycle are all key factors in the role of birds as tick disseminators. It was revealed that Savi’s Warbler ( Locustella luscinioides ) is the most frequent hosts of Ha. concinna in Central Hungary.
Contributions to our knowledge on avian louse flies (Hippoboscidae: Ornithomyinae) with the first European record of the African species Ornithoctona laticornis
Background Louse flies (Diptera, Hippoboscidae) are important blood-sucking parasites of birds and mammals with a worldwide distribution. The aim of our study was to collect louse flies from birds across multiple sites in Hungary and evaluate the effects of avian traits on louse fly–host relationships. Methods Between 2015 and 2022, 237 louse flies were collected from birds at multiple locations in Hungary. The louse flies were identified to species level by morphological and molecular methods. Louse fly species and their seasonal dynamics were analyzed. Results Six louse fly species were identified: Ornithomya avicularia , Ornithomya fringillina , Ornithomya biloba , Ornithomya chloropus , Ornithoica turdi and Ornithoctona laticornis. Results of statistical analyses indicated that habitat, migration habits and the feeding places of birds have significant effects on their possible role as hosts of O. avicularia , O. fringillina and O. turdi . Analysis of the temporal distribution of avian louse flies showed different seasonal patterns according to species. Phylogenetic analyses highlighted that O. turdi clustered separately from other members of the subfamily Ornithomyinae which thus did not form a monophyletic group. Conclusions This study presents one of the longest continuous collections of ornithophilic louse fly species in Europe so far. Avian traits were shown to influence louse-fly infestation. To our best knowledge, this is the first report on O. laticornis in Europe. The ability of this African louse fly species to survive in Europe, as demonstrated in the present study, may be an indication of its future establishment . Our findings, in accordance with previous reports, also indicated that the subfamily Ornithomyinae should be taxonomically revised. Graphical Abstract
Birds as potential reservoirs of tick-borne pathogens: first evidence of bacteraemia with Rickettsia helvetica
BACKGROUND: Birds have long been known as carriers of ticks, but data from the literature are lacking on their role as a reservoir in the epidemiology of certain tick-borne disease-causing agents. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of three emerging, zoonotic tick-borne pathogens in blood samples and ticks of birds and to assess the impact of feeding location preference and migration distance of bird species on their tick infestation. METHODS: Blood samples and ticks of birds were analysed with TaqMan real-time PCRs and conventional PCR followed by sequencing. RESULTS: During the spring and autumn bird migrations, 128 blood samples and 140 ticks (Ixodes ricinus, Haemaphysalis concinna and a Hyalomma specimen) were collected from birds belonging to 16 species. The prevalence of tick infestation and the presence of tick species were related to the feeding and migration habits of avian hosts. Birds were shown to be bacteraemic with Rickettsia helvetica and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, but not with Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis. The prevalence of rickettsiae was high (51.4%) in ticks, suggesting that some of them may have acquired their infection from their avian host. CONCLUSION: Based on the present results birds are potential reservoirs of both I. ricinus transmitted zoonotic pathogens, R. helvetica and A. phagocytophilum, but their epidemiological role appears to be less important concerning the latter, at least in Central Europe.
Ecdysteroids are present in the blood of wild passerine birds
Ecdysteroids (arthropod molting hormones) play an important role in the development and sexual maturation of arthropods, and they have been shown to have anabolic and “energizing” effect in higher vertebrates. The aim of this study was to assess ecdysteroid diversity, levels according to bird species and months, as well as to observe the molting status of hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting the birds. Therefore, blood samples and ticks were collected from 245 birds (244 songbirds and a quail). Mass spectrometric analyses showed that 15 ecdysteroids were regularly present in the blood samples. Molting hormones biologically most active in insects (including 20-hydroxyecdysone [20E], 2deoxy-20E, ajugasterone C and dacryhainansterone) reached different levels of concentration according to bird species and season. Similarly to ecdysteroids, the seasonal presence of affected, apolytic ticks peaked in July and August. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the presence of a broad range and high concentrations of ecdysteroids in the blood stream of wild-living passerine birds. These biologically active, anabolic compounds might possibly contribute to the known high metabolic rate of songbirds.
The Common Rock Thrush (Monticola saxatilis) in the Carpathian Basin
The Common Rock Thrush is a species with an extremly large distribution range. Its European population is the strongest in the Mediterranean, but it also breeds in Central Europe. It still nests in small numbers in the Carpathian Basin, but has become extinct as a breeder in Hungary, where it was never a common species. In the present study, we summarised the occurrences of the species in the Carpathian Basin published in the literature. In the late 19 and early 20th centuries, a large amount of observational data on the spring migration of the species was collected, which allowed us to describe the migration phenology of that time. The Common Rock Thrush bred in small numbers in mountainous areas of Hungary, in natural habitats and in mines, vineyards and orchards. The collapse of the population occurred in the 1970s, but thereafter a few pairs bred in Hungary until the 2010s. Very few published records were found in Slovakia and Romania, which does not give a true picture of its former distribution there. However, its population has also declined drastically in Romania and it has become extinct as nesting species in Slovakia. The exact cause of the decline cannot be determined and several explanations have been proposed in recent decades. It is likely that the Carpathian Basin population, which is considered to be an edge-population, has been more exposed to negative changes, such as climate change, chemical inputs or changes in wintering grounds. A century earlier, the median date of the first spring returns was mid-April, but sometimes it was observed as early as late March. Nowadays, vagrant individuals have been observed again several times in Hungary, which gives us some hope for the future.
Delineating large-scale migratory connectivity of reed warblers using integrated multistate models
Aim: Assessing the extent of large-scale migratory connectivity is crucial for understanding the evolution of migratory systems and effective species conservation. It has been, however, difficult to elucidate the annual whereabouts of migratory populations of small animals across the annual cycle. Here, we use the reed warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) as one of the most frequently ringed passerines in Europe to demonstrate how ring re-encounter and geolocator data can be used to effectively quantify range-wide distribution of different populations. Location: Birds were ringed across Europe and re-encountered in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Methods: We employed multistate models which quantify range-wide distribution of different breeding populations while accounting for the spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the re-encounter probabilities and differential age-specific survival during migratory and non-migratory periods. In addition, we integrated geolocator and breeding abundance data as well as human population density to provide a realistic picture of the year-round distribution of the reed warbler, a trans-Saharan migrant. Results: Our modelling approach revealed frequent use of the western Mediterranean flyway for the majority of western European populations, but a higher absolute number of reed warblers used the eastern flyway. Further, many populations used different stopover areas during post-and pre-breeding migration, resulting in an anticlockwise loop migration pattern. Main conclusions: The integrative modelling framework helped us to depict the range-wide migration pattern more realistically than raw ring re-encounter data would allow.
High-resolution computed tomographic (HRCT) image series from 413 canid and 18 felid skulls
Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive, three-dimensional imaging tool used in medical imaging, forensic science, industry and engineering, anthropology, and archaeology. The current study used high-resolution medical CT scanning of 431 animal skulls, including 399 dog skulls from 152 breeds, 14 cat skulls from 9 breeds, 14 skulls from 8 wild canid species (gray wolf, golden jackal, coyote, maned wolf, bush dog, red fox, Fennec fox, bat-eared fox), and 4 skulls from 4 wild felid species (wildcat, leopard, serval, caracal). This comprehensive and unique collection of CT image series of skulls can provide a solid foundation not only for comparative anatomical and evolutionary studies but also for the advancement of veterinary education, virtual surgery planning, and the facilitation of training in sophisticated machine learning methodologies.
The spring migration and distribution of Common Crane (Grus grus) in the Carpathian Basin during the late 19th and early 20th centuries
During the early 21st century, the Carpathian Basin was recognised as one of the world’s most important migratory area for the Common Crane, but it is not completely clear, what was its status during the late 19 and early 20 centuries. Between 1897 and 1916, a total of 1487 field observation data were published in the journal Aquila from the Carpathian Basin. Our work analysed the timing of the spring migration, how it differed between years and geographical regions, and how the temperature and geographical variables reported above influenced the timing of the migration. The results show that the migration routes of the species have changed significantly over the last century. During the study period, the migration concentrated in the eastern part of the Carpathian Basin, and was particularly rare in the Great Hungarian Plain. There was on average a two-week difference in the timing of migration between the western and eastern parts and between different years. The start and peak of migration were weeks later than today, and this change is mainly due to the effects of climate change. Geographical factors did not influence the migration of the species, whereas higher air temperatures advanced the timing of the migration.
Digital Endocasting in Comparative Canine Brain Morphology
Computed tomography (CT) is one of the most useful techniques for digitizing bone structures and making endocranial models from the neurocranium. The resulting digital endocasts reflect the morphology of the brain and the associated structures. Our first aim was to document the methodology behind creating detailed digital endocasts of canine skulls. We created digital endocasts of the skulls of 24 different dog breeds and 4 wild canids for visualization and teaching purposes. We used CT scanning with 0.323 mm × 0.322 mm × 0.6 mm resolution. The imaging data were segmented with 3D Slicer software and refined with Autodesk Meshmixer. Images were visualized in 3D Slicer and surface models were converted to 3D PDFs to provide easier interactive access, and 3D prints were also generated for visualization purposes. Our second aim was to analyze how skull length and width relate to the surface areas of the prepiriform rhinencephalic, prefrontal, and non-prefrontal cerebral convexity areas of the endocasts. The rhinencephalic area ratio decreased with a larger skull index. Our results open the possibility to analyze the relationship between the skull and brain morphology, and to link certain features to behavior, and cognition in dogs.
Malaria infection status of European Robins seems to associate with timing of autumn migration but not with actual condition
Avian malaria parasites can negatively affect many aspects of the life of the passerines. Though these parasites may strongly affect the health and thus migration patterns of the birds also during autumn, previous studies on avian malaria focused mainly on the spring migration and the breeding periods of the birds. We investigated whether the prevalence of blood parasites varies in relation to biometrical traits, body condition and arrival time in the European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) during autumn migration. We found no sex or age related differences in avian malaria prevalence and no relationship between infection status and body size or actual condition of the birds was found either. However, the timing of autumn migration differed marginally between infected and non-infected juveniles, so that parasitized individuals arrived later at the Hungarian stopover site. This is either because avian malaria infections adversely affect the migration timing or migration speed of the birds, or because later arriving individuals come from more distant populations with possibly higher blood parasite prevalence. The possible delay that parasites cause in the arrival time of the birds during autumn migration could affect the whole migratory strategy and the breeding success of the birds in the next season.
