THE PEDAGOGICAL LEGACY OF ELSA LUDEWIG-VERDEHR
\"9 Verdehr attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, for both her master's and doctoral degrees. At MSU she became a member of the Richards Wind Quintet for 20 seasons, co-founded the Verdehr Trio (1972) with husband and fellow faculty violinist Walter Verdehr and performed in every U.S. state and 60 countries during their 43-year career, making 35 CDs and nine DVDs with the Trio. In 2007 she received the ICA's highest honor for lifetime achievement, the Honorary Member Award, for her distinction in the areas of professional service, teaching and performance. .not only to figure out and improve their technical way of playing, but also to be able to understand and perform a new piece of music based on what the composer wrote - to find what I call the hints, the suggestions, the harmonic implications, the phrases and sections and the character that the composer has put on the page for us to discover.10 As the consummate example of this philosophy, she never ceased re-examining her own approach and execution of playing, while learning new repertoire and commissioning more than 220 works for the Verdehr Trio.
FLOWERS WITHOUT BORDERS
Webb et al discuss the ClarinetFest 2021. As a result of the global COVID-19 health emergency and our inability to guarantee a safe event for its members with all of the unknowns of the pandemic and the spreading of the variants of the virus, the International Clarinet Association has made the difficult decision to move ClarinetFest 2021 to a virtual format. The Artistic Leadership Team has created a globally-inclusive virtual ClarinetFest that will be a free event for all registered attendees. They want to encourage the ICA membership, band directors, private teachers, students, friends and family to take advantage of the free registration for ClarinetFest 2021. Redesigning the conference has allowed them to relax the schedule over four weekends in July. Each event will be given a unique \"release\" time but all events will remain available in the ICA archives for attendees to view on their own time.
FLOWERS WITHOUT BORDERS
In the summer of 2018 the Artistic Leadership Team for ClarinetFest® 2021 envisioned a very different plan, but like strong-rooted wildflowers blowing in the wind, we are overcoming the continued challenges of COVID-19 to completely reimagine the possibilities. The Artistic Leadership Team is charging ahead with preparations for a globally-inclusive virtual ClarinetFest® and we look forward to hosting a wonderfully diverse event for an increasingly connected clarinet world. The Featured Evening Artist invitation process started in summer of 2019 and has constantly evolved around pandemic concerns. Featured Evening Artists and their sponsors will choose a unique air time in their preferred local prime time to encourage friends, family and supporters from home an opportunity to watch, creating a truly international stage on a global clock. Another innovative addition in 2021 is the Clarinet Learning Community at ClarinetFest®, which is structured to organize and feature all pedagogy clinics, seminars, lectures, workshops and master classes from both Reno and Fort Worth proposals.
