This survey investigated the distribution of various intestinal parasites and vector-borne pathogens in stray and free-roaming cats living in four regions of Greece. A total number of one hundred and fifty cats living in three Islands (Crete, Mykonos and Skopelos) and in Athens municipality was established as a realistic aim to be accomplished in the study areas. All cats were examined with different microscopic, serological and molecular assays aiming at evaluating the occurrence of intestinal parasites, and exposure to or presence of vector-borne infections. A total of 135 cats (90%) was positive for one or more parasites and/or pathogens transmitted by ectoparasites. Forty-four (29.3%) cats were positive for one single infection, while 91 (60.7%) for more than one pathogen. A high number of (n. 53) multiple infections caused by feline intestinal and vector-borne agents including at least one zoonotic pathogen was detected. Among them, the most frequently recorded helminths were roundworms (Toxocara cati, 24%) and Dipylidium caninum (2%), while a high number of examined animals (58.8%) had seroreaction for Bartonella spp., followed by Rickettsia spp. (43.2%) and Leishmania infantum (6.1%). DNA-based assays revealed the zoonotic arthropod-borne organisms Bartonella henselae, Bartonella clarridgeiae, Rickettsia spp., and L. infantum. These results show that free-ranging cats living in areas of Greece under examination may be exposed to a plethora of internal parasites and vector-borne pathogens, some of them potentially able to infect humans. Therefore, epidemiological vigilance and appropriate control measures are crucial for the prevention and control of these infections and to minimize the risk of infection for people.

The increasing interest on respiratory nematodes of domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus) has recently stimulated several studies on their epidemiology and geographic distribution. At the same time, there are still important gaps in our knowledge of the infections caused by respiratory nematodes in wild felids. The present study investigated the occurrence of pulmonary parasites in wild hosts housed in sanctuaries and protected areas of South Africa. Faecal samples collected from seven species of wild felids living in three study sites were copromicroscopically and genetically examined. Of twenty-one samples six, i.e. three from caracals (Caracal caracal), two from lions (Panthera leo) and one from a serval (Leptailurus serval), scored positive for the metastrongyloid Aelurostrongylus abstrusus at copromicroscopic and/or molecular tests. No other lungworms were recorded. The occurrence of the cosmopolitan cat lungworm A. abstrusus in wild hosts has been so far questioned. Importantly, the present findings represent an unequivocal evidence of the capability of A. abstrusus to infect some species of wild felids. Further studies are warranted to understand the epidemiological patterns of lungworms in wild and domestic felids, and to better investigate the impact of these parasitoses on health and welfare of wild animals.

Efficacy of a combination of esafoxolaner, eprinomectin and praziquantel (NexGard ® Combo) against Thelazia callipaeda in naturally infected cats

This clinical study assessed the efficacy of a topical combination of esafoxolaner, eprinomectin and praziquantel (NexGard
Combo) in treating cats naturally infected with the eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda (Nematoda, Thelaziidae). On Study Day (SD) 0, sixteen client-owned cats with eyeworm infection were allocated to an untreated control group (G1, 8 cats) or to a NexGard
Combo treated group (G2, 8 cats) and subjected to ocular examination. Cats in G2 received the treatment as per label recommendations. On SD 7 and 14 (±1), cats were examined for the presence of eyeworms and clinical signs. On SD 14, eyeworms were collected and counted. On SD 7 and 14, all cats in G1 were still infected with eyeworms, while G2 cats were free from eyeworms on SD 7 and 14, demonstrating 100% efficacy (p < 0.0001). All collected eyeworms were morphologically and molecularly confirmed to be T. callipaeda. On SD 0, fifteen out of the sixteen cats (7 in G1 and 8 in G2) displayed inflammatory ocular signs. On SD 7, all eight untreated cats and seven treated cats displayed inflammatory ocular signs. On SD 14, five out of eight G2 treated cats had recovered, while the eight untreated cats still displayed inflammatory ocular signs. The treatment significantly reduced lacrimation and conjunctivitis (p = 0.0001). No adverse reactions occurred. This clinical study provides evidence that NexGard
Combo is highly safe and effective for the treatment of T. callipaeda infection in cats under field conditions.

Feline pulmonary capillariosis is a significant disorder due to its distribution and clinical impact. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of two administrations 28 days apart of a topical solution containing esafoxolaner, eprinomectin and praziquantel (NexGard ® Combo) in treating Eucoleus aerophilus (syn. Capillaria aerophila ) infection in naturally infected cats. Cats were allocated to two groups: G1 cats ( n = 23) received two treatments at study days (SDs) 0 and 28 (±2) and were evaluated for 6 weeks, and G2 cats ( n = 17) served as a negative control for 6 weeks and were then treated twice on SDs 42 (±2) and 70 (±2), allowing for an additional 6-week assessment of efficacy. Each cat was subjected to McMaster coproscopy at SDs −7/0, 28 (±2) and 42 (±2) for both groups, 70 (±2) and 84 (±2) only for G2. Clinical examination and chest radiographic images were performed at SDs 0, 28 (±2) and 42 (±2) for G1 and G2, 70 (±2) and 84 (±2) only for G2. The comparison of EPG (eggs per gram of feces), clinical (CS), and radiographic scores (RS) at each time-point was used as a criterion. The efficacy based on the EPG reduction was 99.5% (G1) and 100% (G2) after two administrations of NexGard ® Combo 2 weeks apart. At SD 0, no significant differences for CS and RS were recorded between G1 and G2, while a significant reduction ( p < 0.05) was observed post-treatment for CS, RS, oculo-nasal discharge, auscultation noises, and cough. Two doses of NexGard ® Combo 28 days apart stopped egg shedding and significantly improved clinical alterations in cats infected by E. aerophilus . La capillariose pulmonaire féline est un trouble important, de par sa répartition et son impact clinique. Cette étude a évalué l’innocuité et l’efficacité de deux administrations à 28 jours d’intervalle d’une solution topique contenant de l’esafoxolaner, de l’éprinomectine et du praziquantel (NexGard ® Combo) dans le traitement de l’infection à Eucoleus aerophilus (syn. Capillaria aerophila ) chez des chats naturellement infectés. Les chats ont été répartis en deux groupes : les chats G1 ( n = 23) ont reçu deux traitements aux jours d’étude (JE) 0 et 28 (±2) et ont été évalués pendant 6 semaines et les chats G2 ( n = 17) ont servi de contrôle négatif pendant 6 semaines, puis ont été traités deux fois aux JE 42 (±2) et 70 (±2), permettant une évaluation supplémentaire de l’efficacité sur 6 semaines. Chaque chat a été soumis à une coproscopie McMaster aux JE −7/0, 28 (±2) et 42 (±2) pour les deux groupes, 70 (±2) et 84 (±2) uniquement pour G2. L’examen clinique et les images radiographiques thoraciques ont été réalisés aux JE 0, 28 (±2) et 42 (±2) pour G1 et G2, 70 (±2) et 84 (±2) uniquement pour G2. La comparaison des nombres d’œufs par gramme de matières fécales (OPG), score clinique (SC) et score radiographique (SR) à chaque point ont été utilisées comme critères d’efficacité. L’efficacité basée sur la réduction de OPG était de 99,5 % (G1) et de 100 % (G2) après deux administrations de NexGard Combo à deux semaines d’intervalle. À JE 0, aucune différence significative pour SC et SR n’a été enregistrée entre G1 et G2, tandis qu’une réduction significative ( p < 0,05) a été observée après le traitement pour SC, SR, écoulements oculo-nasaux, bruits d’auscultation et toux. Deux doses de NexGard ® Combo à 28 jours d’intervalle arrêtent l’excrétion des œufs et améliorent considérablement les altérations cliniques chez les chats infectés par E. aerophilus .

Hepatozoon spp. in stray cats from the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

In the last few years, the number of studies on feline hepatozoonosis has increased, but our knowledge on the actual species of Hepatozoon and/or different genotypes affecting felines is still incipient. At least three species, namely Hepatozoon felis , H. canis , and H. silvestris , have been isolated from domestic cats in various countries. Additionally, there are indications that other species and genotypes may affect felines in given geographic areas. This study was carried out to investigate the occurrence of Hepatozoon spp. in cats from Niterói, a municipality within the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Individual blood samples were collected from 28 cats enrolled in a spaying/castration program. DNA was extracted from all samples and subjected to sequencing specific for Hepatozoon spp. DNA of H. felis was found in 21/28 cats (75%), and four genetic polymorphisms never described thus far were detected. This is the first report of H. felis in cats living in the State of Rio de Janeiro, and the present data confirm that H. felis is a species complex encompassing different genotypes circulating within cat populations. Further studies are warranted to investigate whether different genotypes have different biology or pathogenicity for felids. Au cours des dernières années, le nombre d’études sur l’hépatozoonose féline a augmenté, mais nos connaissances sur les espèces d’ Hepatozoon et/ou différents génotypes affectant les félins sont encore naissantes. Au moins trois espèces, à savoir Hepatozoon felis , H. canis et H. silvestris , ont été isolées chez des chats domestiques dans divers pays. De plus, il semble que d’autres espèces et génotypes puissent affecter les félins dans des zones géographiques données. Cette étude a été réalisée pour étudier la présence d’ Hepatozoon spp. chez des chats de Niterói, une municipalité de la zone métropolitaine de Rio de Janeiro, au Brésil. Des échantillons de sang ont été prélevés individuellement sur 28 chats d’un programme de castration. L’ADN a été extrait de tous les échantillons et soumis à un séquençage spécifique de Hepatozoon spp. L’ADN de H. felis a été trouvé chez 21 chats sur 28 (75%) et quatre polymorphismes génétiques, jamais décrits jusqu’à présent, ont été détectés. Il s’agit du premier signalement de H. felis chez des chats vivant dans l’État de Rio de Janeiro et les données actuelles confirment que H. felis est un complexe d’espèces englobant différents génotypes circulant au sein des populations de chats. Des études supplémentaires sont nécessaires pour déterminer si les différents génotypes ont une biologie ou une pathogénicité différente pour les félidés.

Serological Evidence of Selected Tick-Borne Pathogens and Dirofilaria immitis in Owned Dogs from Italy and Greece

Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) are caused by pathogens transmitted by several invertebrates, posing a significant threat to both animal and human health worldwide. In recent years, the geographical distribution of CVBDs has changed in many countries, driven by climate change, increased pet travel, movements of goods, and anthropization of wildlife habitats. This study investigated the exposure to major CVBDs in 423 owned dogs from Italy and Greece. Individual serum samples were analyzed using serological methods. The SNAP® 4Dx IDEXX test was used to detect Dirofilaria immitis circulating antigens and antibodies against Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia spp. and Borrelia burgdorferi. Additionally, an indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) was used to detect antibodies against Rickettsia conorii and Babesia canis. Overall, 171 (40.4%) dogs were positive for at least one pathogen. Antibodies against R. conorii, Ehrlichia spp., Anaplasma spp., B. canis and B. burgdorferi were detected in 118 (27.9%), 28 (6.6%), 29 (6.8%), 5 (1.2%) and 3 (0.7%) dogs, respectively. Dirofilaria immitis antigens were found in 7 dogs (1.6%). A Binomial Logistic Regression was performed and revealed a statistically significant association between age (dogs > 7 years old) (p = 0.005; OR = 1.903; 95% CI = 1.215–2.2981) and presence of at least one clinical sign (p = 0.028; OR = 4.082; 95% CI = 1.168–14.262) and positivity to at least one vector-borne pathogen. These findings confirm that dogs in both Italy and Greece are exposed to a range of vector-borne pathogens and highlight the importance of continuous epidemiological surveillance in European regions.

The metastrongyloids Aelurostrongylus abstrusus and Troglostrongylus brevior, and the capillariid Capillaria aerophila, are major respiratory nematodes infecting cats. In recent decades these nematodes have been recorded in several areas of the world and have called for epizootiological studies to update knowledge on their distribution. While A. abstrusus is known to occur in some areas of Brazil, the presence of T. brevior remains uncertain, and feline infections with C. aerophila have never been reported. This study has investigated the occurrence of lungworms with or without other endoparasitoses in domestic cat populations of selected areas of Brazil. Individual faecal samples were collected from 537 cats, i.e., 521 in metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro and 16 in Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul). All samples were examined with Sheather’s flotation, and 521 of them also with the Baermann test. DNA was extracted from 425 Baermann sediments and molecularly examined for A. abstrusus and T. brevior. The most frequent parasites found at the copromicroscopy were Ancylostomatidae (n. 30, 5.8%), Toxocara cati (14, 2.7%), and Cystoisospora felis (n. 8; 1.5%). Larvae of A. abstrusus were identified by Baermann in 3 samples from Rio de Janeiro, while at PCRs, A. abstrusus DNA was amplified in 10 samples from Rio de Janeiro (n. 3), Seropédica (n. 3), Niterói (n. 3), and Porto Alegre (n. 1). The results indicate that A. abstrusus is enzootic in the investigated areas of Brazil and underline the usefulness of PCR when larvae are not detected by copromicroscopy or when only a single stool sample is analysed. Epizootiological implications, along with the absence of T. brevior in the examined cats and the presence of zoonotic endoparasites, are discussed.

Feline Troglostrongylosis: Current Epizootiology, Clinical Features, and Therapeutic Options

Parasitic bronchopneumonia plays an important role in feline respiratory medicine, thus it is receiving growing attention by researchers and practitioners. In recent years,
, a lungworm usually infecting wild felids, has been recognized as an agent of the lower respiratory tract in domestic cats. In particular, as a likely consequence of a spill-over from wild reservoirs (e.g., the European wildcat),
infection is increasingly reported in cats from Mediterranean and Balkan countries. This parasitic nematode has an indirect life cycle, and its biology overlaps that of the better known \"cat lungworm\"
. In fact, cases of co-infections caused by both lungworms are not infrequent in domestic cats. Knowledge on clinical features of troglostrongylosis is still incomplete. Available data indicates that clinical signs and radiographic evidence are severe especially in kittens and young cats, are non-specific and often overlap with those of other feline respiratory diseases, such as feline bronchial disease/asthma, or infectious pneumonia. These characteristics make a definitive diagnosis of troglostrongylosis challenging, this disease requires a timely ancillary therapy and an appropriate anthelminthic treatment. As feline troglostrongylosis is an emerging parasitic disease of domestic cats, it should be included in differential diagnosis for lower respiratory tract disease in cats from regions where this parasite is present but also where it is unexpected. This article reviews current knowledge on the pathogenic role of
in domestic cats and resulting respiratory illness, with a special focus on clinical aspects, diagnosis, and management of the disease.

Canine angiostrongylosis: recent advances in diagnosis, prevention, and treatment

Angiostrongylus vasorum is a parasitic nematode affecting the heart and pulmonary arteries of wild (eg, foxes) and domestic canids. The parasite has an indirect life cycle in which slugs and snails act as intermediate hosts. In the last few years the parasite has spread outside the traditional endemic foci, and there is a rise of documented cases of canine angiostrongylosis across Europe. Angiostrongylus vasorum causes cardiopulmonary disorders and coagulopathies, along with different nonspecific clinical signs. Fatal infections are frequently reported. Given the severity of the infection and the recent geographic spreading of the parasite, this article reviews and discusses the current knowledge of A. vasorum, with a special focus on recent insights on diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dog angiostrongylosis. Occurrence and zoonotic potential of endoparasites in cats of Cyprus and a new distribution area for Troglostrongylus brevior

The present study investigated for the first time the occurrence of pulmonary and intestinal parasites of cats in Cyprus. Cats from five districts of Cyprus (Lefkosia, Lemesos, Larnaka, Pafos and Ammochostos) were examined by classical parasitological methods and the identity of lungworm larvae, whenever present, was confirmed by PCR-coupled sequencing. A total of 185 cats, 48 living exclusively indoors and 137 with outdoor access, were included in the study. Parasites were found in 66 (35.7%) of the examined cats, i.e.

(0.5%). Mixed infections were recorded in 18 cats. Cats that lived exclusively indoors or had received an antiparasitic treatment in the last 6 months were less likely to be infected (

< 0.05). Moreover, cats younger than 1 year old were more likely to shed first-stage larvae of
T. brevior
(
p
= 0.04). The present study shows that cats in Cyprus are infected at a high percentage by a variety of parasites that potentially affect their health and also, in some cases (i.e.
T. cati
,
D. caninum
,
Giardia
spp.), may have an impact on human health. Moreover, it was revealed that
T. brevior
, a lungworm of emerging significance, is present on the island, rendering Cyprus the easternmost distribution border of this parasite in Europe to date.
