The Samurai 1 variety is a genetically mutated strain with superior agronomic characteristics and enhanced nutrient content. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of harvest maturity stages and fibrolytic enzyme (Sunsonzyme) treatment on the nutrient value, fermentative quality, and nutrient digestibility of Sorghum bicolor cv. Samurai 1 silage. The silage quality was assessed using a completely randomized design with a 3 x 3 factorial arrangement. Sorghum was harvested at three different maturity stages, namely 85, 90, and 95 days, with fibrolytic enzyme added at 0%, 0.025%, and 0.05% of the dry matter.In vitro fermentability and digestibility were evaluated using a randomized block factorial design, which was also based on the same three harvest stages and enzyme levels. Observed variables included the nutrient composition of the sorghum, physical characteristics and nutrient content of the silage, as well as in vitro fermentability and digestibility. The results showed a significant interaction between harvest maturity and enzyme level on lactic acid production and total volatile fatty acid (VFA). Harvest age significantly affected (p<0.05) all variables, while the treatment of fibrolytic enzyme significantly increased ammonia (NH₃) and total VFA concentrations, as well as reduced the fiber fraction of the silage (p<0.05). The harvest age of 90 days showed the best quality in terms of nutrients, silage, and rumen fermentability. The addition of enzyme levels up to 0.05% improved the fermentative quality of silage, reduced fiber fractions, and enhanced rumen fermentability.

Physical, chemical, and in vitro digestibility of complete feed block silage based on oil palm fronds

Studies on complete feed block silage based on oil palm fronds (OPF) are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the physical and chemical qualities, as well as the in vitro digestibility, of complete feed block silage based on OPF for beef cattle. The study used a Randomized Block Design (RBD) involving three feed treatments with five replicates. The treatments included P0 = untreated complete feed based on OPF, P1 = P0 turned into silage, and P2 = P1 dried and formed into blocks. Physical characteristics and nutrient contents were analyzed descriptively. Digestibility data and pH values were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Duncan’s multiple range test. The results showed that P2 had a softer texture and higher acidic aroma than P0 and lower than P1. The acidity of P2 was higher than that of P1 and lower than that of P0. The digestibility values for dry and organic matter were similar for all the treatments. In conclusion, drying and block formation in P2 improved the physical characteristics and aroma of silage blocks but did not significantly affect the digestibility of dry and organic matter.

Evaluation of various salt addition levels in the pellets on performance and health of the domestic rabbit urination system

This research aims to evaluate the various salt addition levels in the pellets on the performance and health of the domestic rabbit urination system. The completely randomized design method was used to determine the 5 levels of salt addition to the treatment, namely P 1 , P 2 , P 3 , P 4 , and P 5 with 0%, 0,175%, 0,25%, 0,375%, and 0,50%. The sample consists of 20 male domestic rabbits aged 8 weeks with an average body weight of 897,05 ± 68,27g, which were kept in individual cages. The variables of these rabbits were analyzed to determine their performance and urinalysis using Anova (analysis of variance) and correlation analysis. The Anova results showed that salt addition levels in the pellets had a significant effect on FI, WI, FCR, UV, Nit, Pro (p<0,05), and insignificant on BWG, pH, Leu, Uro, Blo, Ket, Bil, Glu, and SG (p>0,05). The results further showed the correlation on several variables of performance and urinalysis. In conclusion, the optimal level of salt addition in the pellets was 0,25% because it give the lowest value of feed conversion ratio and does not adversely affect the health of the domestic rabbit urination system.

Effects of Black Soldier Fly oil and calcium soap supplementation on rumen fermentability of Garut Sheep

Fat is a source of energy for livestock, with low heat metabolic, but dietary fat had negative impact for rumen fermentation. Calcium soap can protect fat for ruminant. This study aimed to examine the characteristics of rumen fermentation in Garut sheep fed with suplements of BSF ( Hermetia illucens ) oil and BSF Calcium soap. This research used fifteen male Garut sheep with an average body weight of 29.90 ± 3.71 kg. This research used randomized block design consisting of three treatments and five replicates. The treatments were diet without supplementation BSF oil or Calcium soap (P1), diet with BSF oil suplementation 4% (P2) and diet with BSF Calcium soap suplementation 4% (P3). Data were analyzed using ANOVA and further test with Duncan test. The analysis showed that the rumen pH value, ammonia concentration, and protozoa population in the rumen were not affected by the treatments. Concentration of VFA and population of rumen bacteria were significantly (P<0.05) affected by the treatments. The total VFA concentration of P3 was significantly higher (P<0.05) than P1 and P2. Rumen bacteria population of P3 was significantly higher (P<0.05) than P1 and or P2. It can be concluded that supplementation of BSF Calcium soap improve rumen fermentation indicated by higher VFA concentration and bacteria population in the rumen.

The addition of feed additive in beef cattle ration on in vitro fermentation characteristics

The effects of feed additives are increasing feed digestibility, balance of rumen microbial community, stimulating the immune response and livestock productivity. This study aimed to determine the effects of feed additives combination in the rumen fermentation. The method used in this study was a block randomized design with 9 treatments and 3 replications. The experiment using Theodorou In vitro method for 48 hours with parameters such as pH, kinetics gas and methane production, DMD, OMD, NH 3, and partial VFA. The treatment were P0; control (Basal Diet 70% Concentrate + 30% Forages), P1; P0 + Premix, P2; P1 + Probiotic, P3; P1 + Enzyme, P4; P1 + Plant Extract, P5; P1 + (Probiotics + Enzyme), P6; P1 + (Probiotics + Plant Extract), P7; P1 + (Probiotic + Enzyme + Plant Extract), and P8; P1 + (Enzyme + Plant Extract). The results showed kinetics gas, methane production, NH 3, and partial VFA were significantly affected (P <0.05), while the value of pH, DMD, and OMD was not significant. In conclusion, the addition of mix feed additives can affect the kinetics gas and methane production. However, it does not affect the level of pH, dry matter and organic matter digestibility.

Utilization of Vinasse-Molasses in The Finishing Ration on Growth Performance of Peranakan Ongole Cattle

Vinasse-molasses, the residue of condensed molasses is a co-product of sugar production. It is not reused in manufacturing process and become polluted. However, Its contents of 48-60% of sugar and high in potassium and sulphates. This study was to evaluate Vinasse-molasses utilization as a replacer of molasses in finishing ration on the growth performance of Peranakan Ongole Cattle. A total of 10 Peranakan Ongole cattle (initial body weight of 209 ± 21 kg) were assigned to molasses group or Vinasse-molasses group. The experiment period was lasted 68 days, preceded by 14 days adaptation period. The experimental diet was composed of 20% forage and 80% concentrate containing 15% molasses or Vinasse-molasses. Parameters observed including final body weight (FBW), average daily gain (ADG), total dry matter intake (DMI), forage intake, concentrate intake, feed efficiency (FE), and income over feed cost (IOFC). The Vinasse-molasses reduced (P<0.05) DMI and concentrate intake followed by IOFC increased (P<0.01) of cattle. However, Vinasse-molasses did not affect (P>0.05) FBW, ADG, forage intake, and FE. It can be concluded that Vinasse-molasses can be utilize as feed ingredient to replace molasses in finishing ration to support the sustainability of beef production.

Performance, Carcass Production, and Meat Quality of Sumba Ongole Bulls Fed Ration Supplemented Velvet Bean (Mucuna pruriens)

This research aimed to study performance, carcass production, meat quality, and economic feasibility of male Sumba Ongole cattle fed ration supplemented with velvet bean (M. pruriens). The research was designed in a completely randomized block design using 16 cattle with average body weight of 488+37.08 kg. The treatments were: T0= 15% straw + 85% concentrate; T1= T0 + 12% of velvet bean flour supplement; T2= T0 + 16% of velvet bean tempeh supplement; and T3= T0 + 200 mg/head/d of ractopamine hydrocloride. Data were analyzed by using analysis of variance with orthogonal contrast. The observed variables included feed consumption, average daily body weight gain (ADG), feed efficiency (FE), income over feed cost (IOFC), hot carcass weight (HCW), carcass percentage, subcutaneous fat thickness, meat pH, tenderness, cooking loss, and water holding capacity (WHC). The result revealed that the addition of 12% velvet bean flour into the rations increased dry matter consumption (P<0.05), but did not affect ADG, FE, IOFC, carcass production, and meat quality. The addition of 12% velvet bean flour produced the lowest cooking loss (P<0.05). The addition of 16% velvet bean tempeh into the rations significantly increased (P<0.05) dry matter consumption, however reduced (P<0.05) ADG, FE, and IOFC compared to control treatment. It is concluded that velvet bean flour at the level of 12% can be used as an alternative feed supplement in the ration of Sumba Ongole cattle and can replace the use of synthetic ß-agonist.

Optimizing nitrogen fertilization for enhanced growth and yield of Brachiaria hybrid cv. Mulato II

Brachiaria hybrid cv. Mulato II is an ideal perennial forage for extensive livestock systems, but low soil nitrogen (N) often restricts its production. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of N fertilization on Mulato grass growing on inceptisol soil. The research was conducted from August to December 2024 at the Jonggol Animal Husbandry Teaching and Research Unit (UP3J), IPB University. This study employed a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four blocks serving as replicates. The grouping was based on the location of the planting plots in each row. The treatments in this research consisted of 0 kg N/ha as the control (P0), 75 kg N/ha (P1), and 150 kg N/ha (P2). Results demonstrated that increasing N-fertilizer significantly increases Mulato grass’s morphological characteristics. In addition, yield and nutrient production increased constantly on P2 and P1, respectively. This research highlights the potential of N fertilization to enhance morphological characteristics and production of Mulato grass, with the application of 150 kg N/ha emerging as the most effective rate for optimizing these parameters. Further research is needed to optimize the maximum N fertilization level that can enhance the quality of Mulato grass.

The objectives of this research were: 1) to find out whether acid rain has taken place in Bogor Regency area and its effect on the lead (Pb) content in soil and roughage in the region, 2) to predict the correlation of Pb content in rain water and soil, and the content of Pb in roughage in the Bogor regency area, 3) to study the impact of acid and Pb content in the ration to sheep daily gain and measure Pb content in liver, kidney and meat. The results showed that in Bogor regency area the acid rain occurred during the dry season but not in the wet season. The Pb content in the rainwater and soil were not affected by acid rain. There was no correlation of Pb content between soil and roughage. Acid containing ration decreased daily gain, but not for the ration of high Pb-content. Acid containing ration increased Pb content in the kidney but not in the liver and meat. However, high Pb content in the ration increased the Pb content in the liver and kidney but not in the meat.

Construction of high-density linkage maps for mapping quantitative trait loci for multiple traits in field pea (Pisum sativum L.)

Background: The objective of this research was to map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) of multiple traits of breeding importance in pea (Pisum sativum L.). Three recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations, PR-02 (Orb x CDC Striker), PR-07 (Carerra x CDC Striker) and PR-15 (1–2347-144 x CDC Meadow) were phenotyped for agronomic and seed quality traits under field conditions over multiple environments in Saskatchewan, Canada. The mapping populations were genotyped using genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) method for simultaneous single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) discovery and construction of high-density linkage maps. Results: After filtering for read depth, segregation distortion, and missing values, 2234, 3389 and 3541 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers identified by GBS in PR-02, PR-07 and PR-15, respectively, were used for construction of genetic linkage maps. Genetic linkage groups were assigned by anchoring to SNP markers previously positioned on these linkage maps. PR-02, PR-07 and PR-15 genetic maps represented 527, 675 and 609 non-redundant loci, and cover map distances of 951.9, 1008.8 and 914.2 cM, respectively. Based on phenotyping of the three mapping populations in multiple environments, 375 QTLs were identified for important traits including days to flowering, days to maturity, lodging resistance, Mycosphaerella blight resistance, seed weight, grain yield, acid and neutral detergent fiber concentration, seed starch concentration, seed shape, seed dimpling, and concentration of seed iron, selenium and zinc. Of all the QTLs identified, the most significant in terms of explained percentage of maximum phenotypic variance (PVmax) and occurrence in multiple environments were the QTLs for days to flowering (PVmax = 47.9%), plant height (PVmax = 65.1%), lodging resistance (PVmax = 35.3%), grain yield (PVmax = 54.2%), seed iron concentration (PVmax = 27.4%), and seed zinc concentration (PVmax = 43.2%). Conclusion: We have identified highly significant and reproducible QTLs for several agronomic and seed quality traits of breeding importance in pea. The QTLs identified will be the basis for fine mapping candidate genes, while some of the markers linked to the highly significant QTLs are useful for immediate breeding applications.
