HighlightsFabrication, characterizations and photothermal properties of MXenes are systematically described.Photothermal-derived antibacterial performances and mechanisms of MXenes-based materials are summarized and reviewed.Recent advances in the derivative applications relying on antibacterial properties of MXenes-based materials, including in vitro and in vivo sterilization, solar water evaporation and purification, and flexible antibacterial fabrics, are investigated.The pernicious bacterial proliferation and emergence of super-resistant bacteria have already posed a great threat to public health, which drives researchers to develop antibiotic-free strategies to eradicate these fierce microbes. Although enormous achievements have already been achieved, it remains an arduous challenge to realize efficient sterilization to cut off the drug resistance generation. Recently, photothermal therapy (PTT) has emerged as a promising solution to efficiently damage the integrity of pathogenic bacteria based on hyperthermia beyond their tolerance. Until now, numerous photothermal agents have been studied for antimicrobial PTT. Among them, MXenes (a type of two-dimensional transition metal carbides or nitrides) are extensively investigated as one of the most promising candidates due to their high aspect ratio, atomic-thin thickness, excellent photothermal performance, low cytotoxicity, and ultrahigh dispersibility in aqueous systems. Besides, the enormous application scenarios using their antibacterial properties can be tailored via elaborated designs of MXenes-based materials. In this review, the synthetic approaches and textural properties of MXenes have been systematically presented first, and then the photothermal properties and sterilization mechanisms using MXenes-based materials are documented. Subsequently, recent progress in diverse fields making use of the photothermal and antibacterial performances of MXenes-based materials are well summarized to reveal the potential applications of these materials for various purposes, including in vitro and in vivo sterilization, solar water evaporation and purification, and flexible antibacterial fabrics. Last but not least, the current challenges and future perspectives are discussed to provide theoretical guidance for the fabrication of efficient antimicrobial systems using MXenes.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is the second largest type of stroke, with high mortality and morbidity, and most patients have severe sequelae. Brain injury induced by ICH includes primary damage and secondary damage, and the secondary brain injury is the main reason of neurological impairment. The hallmark of secondary brain injury is cell death. Necroptosis is a type of the cell death and plays vital roles in various neurological diseases, but the roles of necroptosis in ICH are still not fully known. Microglia cell is the type of immune cell, plays protective roles in nerve damage and modulates the activity of neurons through secreting exosomes. Exosome-contained miRNAs are also involved in the regulating neuronal activity. However, the roles and the mechanisms of microglia-secreted exosomes miRNAs in ICH neurons necroptosis need to further explore. In this study, ICH model was construct in rats and cells. Injury of cells in brain was detected by PI staining. Necroptosis in rats and cells was detected by western blot and flow cytometry. The expression of miR-383-3p was detected by RT-qPCR. The roles of activated microglia-secreted exosomes and exosome-contained miR-383-3p were detected through co-culturing medium or exosomes with neurons. The target gene of miR-383-3p was determined by luciferase assay and the expression of target gene was detected by western blot. Rescue experiments were used to confirm the mechanism of miR-383-3p in neurons necroptosis. The miR-383-3p role was verified in vivo through injecting miR-383-3p mimic into ICH rats. Here, we found that the necroptosis of neurons was increased in ICH rats through detecting the expression of RIP1 and RIP3 and PI staining. Microglia that activated by ICH promote neurons necroptosis through secreting exosomes and transferring miR-383-3p into neurons. In mechanism, miR-383-3p negatively regulated the expression of ATF4 and then promoted the necroptosis of neurons. Overall, our results provide a novel molecular basis to neurons necroptosis in ICH and may provide a new strategy to retard the secondary brain injury of ICH.

Urban transformation is an inevitable trend for mining cities to achieve sustainable development. Analyzing the spatiotemporal evolution laws and driving mechanisms of mining cities is necessary for providing a scientific basis for their transformation. In this study, Jixi was taken as an example, which is a typical mining city in China. Based on geographic information system, various mathematical statistical analysis methods were used to quantitatively analyze the evolution pattern of mining cities. In addition, the driving mechanisms of land expansion in mining cities were examined further. The results showed that (1) the urban land in the mining city is mainly distributed in low-lying areas, and land expansion mainly occurred in flat areas. (2) Based on the distribution of mineral resources, the land use pattern of mining cities was scattered; with steady economic development, the urban spatial pattern tends to be compact. (3) The spatial pattern of mining cities is affected by natural, economic, and policy factors. The results reveal the spatiotemporal evolution law and driving mechanism of the patterns in mining cities, thereby providing a scientific basis for the sustainable development planning and land management of mining cities.

Existence and Multiplicity of Solutions for Sublinear Schrödinger Equations with Coercive Potentials

In this study, we consider the following sublinear Schrödinger equations −Δu+Vxu=fx,u,for x∈ℝN,ux⟶0,asu⟶∞, where fx,u satisfies some sublinear growth conditions with respect to u and is not required to be integrable with respect to x. Moreover, V is assumed to be coercive to guarantee the compactness of the embedding from working space to LpℝN for all p∈1,2∗. We show that the abovementioned problem admits at least one solution by using the linking theorem, and there are infinitely many solutions when fx,u is odd in u by using the variant fountain theorem.

miRNA microarray reveals specific expression in the peripheral blood of glioblastoma patients

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are frequently dysregulated in glioblastoma (GBM) patients. It has been discovered that highly stable extracellular miRNAs circulate in the blood of both healthy individuals and patients. miRNAs in serum of patients with GBM and normal controls were analyzed by microarray analysis. The relevant bioinformatic analysis of the predicted target genes (gene ontology, pathway, gene network analysis) were performed. The miRNA microarray reveals differentially expressed miRNAs in serum between the GBM and normal controls. Of the 752 miRNAs, 115 miRNAs were upregulated in the GBM group, and 24 miRNAs were downregulated (fold change ≥2.0, P<0.01). By further analysis, we found that miR-576-5p, miR-340 and miR-626 were significantly overexpressed, but miR-320, let-7g-5p and miR-7-5P showed significantly low expression in GBM patients. By further bioinformatic analysis, we found that they possibly play important roles in the regulation of glioma signaling pathways. In summary, the six miRNAs are significant distinct in the peripheral blood of patients with GBM pathologies. These data suggest that the miRNA profile of the peripheral blood may serve as a new biomarker for glioma diagnosis with high specificity and sensitivity.

The diagnosis and prognostic value of plasma copeptin in traumatic brain injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis

ObjectiveThe purpose of this meta-analysis was to assess the diagnosis and prognostic value of plasma copeptin levels after traumatic brain injury (TBI).MethodsThe databases PubMed, Cochrane Library, OvidSP, Google Scholar, VIP, CNKI, and WFSD were systematically searched from the inception dates to May 9, 2020. The pooled analysis of relevant data was conducted by the RevMan 5.3 software. Subgroups analysis was performed to explore the impact of age, country, male ratio, follow-up time, and Glasgow coma score (GCS) on the pooled area under curve (AUC) values of assessment mortality.ResultsA total of 17 studies involving 2654 participants were included in the current meta-analysis. The pooled results demonstrated that increased plasma copeptin levels were significantly associated with TBI [SMD, 2.44; 95%CI, 1.59 ~ 3.29; P < 0.00001] and also were significantly associated with mortality [SMD, 1.37; 95%CI, 1.16 ~ 1.58; P < 0.00001], and poor functional outcomes (PFO) [SMD, 1.44; 95%CI, 1.20 ~ 1.68; P < 0.00001] in patients with TBI. Furthermore, the copeptin had a significant value in diagnosing brain concussion [AUC, 0.90; 95%CI, 0.84 ~ 0.95; P < 0.00001] and predicting progressive hemorrhagic injury [AUC, 0.83; 95%CI, 0.80 ~ 0.87; P < 0.00001], acute traumatic coagulopathy [AUC, 0.84; 95%CI, 0.79 ~ 0.89; P < 0.00001], mortality [AUC, 0.89; 95%CI, 0.87 ~ 0.92; P < 0.00001], and PFO [AUC, 0.88; 95%CI, 0.84 ~ 0.92; P < 0.00001] in patients with TBI. The subgroup analysis findings suggested that the age, country, male ratio, follow-up time, and GCS were not obvious factors influencing the pooled AUC values of assessment mortality.ConclusionsThe authors indicate that the plasma copeptin is a potentially promising biomarker for TBI diagnosis and prognosis prediction.
