In the present work, we reported the luminescence of a green-emitting carbon dots (CDs) synthesized via solid state reaction method using diammonium hydrogen citrate and urea as a starting materials. The obtained green-emitting CDs shows strong absorption in the 350–450 nm region and gives intense green emission (λ
max
= 537 nm) with quantum yield as high as 46.4% under 420 nm excitation. The obtained green-emitting CDs also demonstrates high photo-stability, which is evidenced by the fact that its emission intensity almost has no change under irradiation by a 365 nm UV lamp for 2 hours. Moreover, the obtained green-emitting CDs shows high sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of Fe
3+
, and their emission intensity response towards Fe
3+
ions is highly linear (R
2
= 0.995) over the concentration range from 25 to 300 µM, which could provide an effective platform for detection of Fe
3+
. Mostly important, we further demonstrate that such photoluminescent green-emitting CDs exhibits low toxicity and are biocompatible for use with in cellular imaging. Combining with low cytotoxicity, good water solubility and excellent luminescence properties, green-emitting CDs could be used as a biocompatible fluorescent ink in future applications.

2017
Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), which can be used as a novel proxy for estimating gross primary production (GPP), can be effectively retrieved using ground-based, airborne and satellite measurements. Absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) is the key bridge linking SIF and GPP. Remotely sensed SIF at the canopy level ( S I F c a n o p y ) is only a part of the total SIF emission at the photosystem level. An SIF-based model for GPP estimation would be strongly influenced by the fraction of SIF photons escaping from the canopy ( f e s c ). Understanding the response of S I F c a n o p y to the absorbed photosynthetically active radiation absorbed by chlorophyll ( A P A R c h l ) is a key step in estimating GPP but, as yet, this has not been well explored. In this study, we aim to investigate the relationship between remotely sensed S I F c a n o p y and A P A R c h l based on simulations made by the Soil Canopy Observation Photosynthesis Energy fluxes (SCOPE) model and field measurements. First, the ratio of the fraction of the absorbed photosynthetically active radiation absorbed by chlorophyll ( fPAR c h l ) to the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation absorbed by green leaves ( fPAR g r e e n ) is investigated using a dataset simulated by the SCOPE model. The results give a mean value of 0.722 for Cab at 5 μg cm−2, 0.761 for Cab at 10 μg cm−2 and 0.795 for other Cab content (ranging from 0.71 to 0.81). The response of S I F c a n o p y to A P A R c h l is then explored using simulations corresponding to different biochemical and biophysical conditions and it is found that S I F c a n o p y is well correlated with A P A R c h l . At the O2-A band, for a given plant type, the relationship between S I F c a n o p y and A P A R c h l can be approximately expressed by a linear statistical model even for different values of the leaf area index (LAI) and chlorophyll content, whereas the relationship varies with the LAI and chlorophyll content at the O2-B band. Finally, the response of S I F c a n o p y to A P A R c h l for different leaf angle distribution (LAD) functions is investigated using field observations and simulations; the results show that f e s c is larger for a planophile canopy structure. The values of the ratio of S I F c a n o p y to A P A R c h l are 0.0092 ± 0.0020 , 0.0076 ± 0.0036 and 0.0052 ± 0.0004 μm−1 sr−1 for planophile vegetables/crops, planophile grass and spherical winter wheat, respectively, at the O2-A band. At the O2-B band, the ratios are 0.0063 ± 0.0014 , 0.0049 ± 0.0030 and 0.0033 ± 0.0004 μm−1 sr−1, respectively. The values of this ratio derived from observations agree with simulations, giving values of 0.0055 ± 0.0002 and 0.0068 ± 0.0001 μm−1 sr−1 at the O2-A band and 0.0032 ± 0.0002 and 0.0047 ± 0.0001 μm−1 sr−1 at the O2-B band for spherical and planophile canopies, respectively. Therefore, both the simulations and observations confirm that the relationship between S I F c a n o p y and APAR c h l is species-specific and affected by biochemical components and canopy structure, especially at the O2-B band. It is also very important to correct for reabsorption and scattering of the SIF radiative transfer from the photosystem to the canopy level before the remotely sensed S I F c a n o p y is linked to the GPP.

SIFSpec: Measuring Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Observations for Remote Sensing of Photosynthesis
2019
Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is regarded as a proxy for photosynthesis in terrestrial vegetation. Tower-based long-term observations of SIF are very important for gaining further insight into the ecosystem-specific seasonal dynamics of photosynthetic activity, including gross primary production (GPP). Here, we present the design and operation of the tower-based automated SIF measurement (SIFSpec) system. This system was developed with the aim of obtaining synchronous SIF observations and flux measurements across different terrestrial ecosystems, as well as to validate the increasing number of satellite SIF products using in situ measurements. Details of the system components, instrument installation, calibration, data collection, and processing are introduced. Atmospheric correction is also included in the data processing chain, which is important, but usually ignored for tower-based SIF measurements. Continuous measurements made across two growing cycles over maize at a Daman (DM) flux site (in Gansu province, China) demonstrate the reliable performance of SIF as an indicator for tracking the diurnal variations in photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and seasonal variations in GPP. For the O2–A band in particular, a high correlation coefficient value of 0.81 is found between the SIF and seasonal variations of GPP. It is thus concluded that, in coordination with continuous eddy covariance (EC) flux measurements, automated and continuous SIF observations can provide a reliable approach for understanding the photosynthetic activity of the terrestrial ecosystem, and are also able to bridge the link between ground-based optical measurements and airborne or satellite remote sensing data.

Behavioral deviations: healthcare-seeking behavior of chronic disease patients with intention to visit primary health care institutions
2023
Background
Although primary health care (PHC) has been proven to be effective in preventing and treating chronic diseases, the visits rate of PHC institutions is still not ideal. Some patients initially express a willingness to visit PHC institutions but end up seeking health services at non-PHC institutions, and the reasons for this behavior remain unclear. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze the factors that contribute to behavioral deviations among chronic disease patients who originally intended to visit PHC institutions.
Methods
Data were collected from a cross-sectional survey among chronic disease patients with original intention to visit PHC institutions in Fuqing City, China. The analysis framework was guided by Andersen’s behavioral model. Logistic regression models were employed to analyze the factors affecting the behavioral deviations among chronic disease patients with a willingness to visit PHC institutions.
Results
A total of 1,048 individuals were finally included and about 40% of the participants with the original willingness to seek care from PHC institutions finally chose non-PHC institutions in their subsequent visits. The results of logistic regression analyses indicated that at the predisposition factor level, older participants (aOR
60-69
= 0.602,
P
< 0.01; aOR
70-75
= 0.475,
P
< 0.01) were less likely to have behavioral deviations. At the enabling factor level, compared to those covered by Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance (UEBMI) and not reimbursed, those covered by Urban–Rural Resident Basic Medical Insurance (URRBMI) (aOR = 0.297,
P
< 0.01), and those answering that reimbursement from medical institutions was convenient (aOR = 0.501,
P
< 0.01) or very convenient (aOR = 0.358,
P
< 0.001) were less likely to have behavioral deviations. At the need factor level, participants who visited PHC institutions due to illness last year (aOR = 0.348,
P
< 0.001) and with polypharmacy (aOR = 0.546,
P
< 0.01) were less likely to have behavioral deviations compared to those without the visit of PHC institutions and not taking polypharmacy, respectively.
Conclusions
The deviations between the original willingness of PHC institution visits and subsequent behavior among chronic disease patients were associated with a number of predisposing, enabling, and need factors. Developing the health insurance system, strengthening the technical capacity of PHC institutions, and steadily developing a new concept of orderly healthcare-seeking behavior among chronic disease patients, will help promote their access to PHC institutions as well as improve the effectiveness of the tiered medical system for chronic disease care.

Meal timing of dietary total antioxidant capacity and its association with all-cause, CVD and cancer mortality: the US national health and nutrition examination survey, 1999–2018
2023
Background
The association of the meal timing of dietary total antioxidant capacity (DAC) with mortality is unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between the meal timing of DAC and all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortality in general adult populations.
Methods
A total of 56,066 adults who participated in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2018 were recruited for this study. Dietary intake (quantity and timing) was evaluated by nonconsecutive 24-h dietary recalls. The main exposure variables were the DAC across three meals (total, breakfast, lunch, and dinner; without coffee) and the difference between dinner and breakfast DAC (Δ = dinner-breakfast; without coffee). The outcomes were all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality. The adjusted hazard ratios [aHRs] and 95% confidence intervals [CI] were imputed by Cox proportional hazards regression.
Results
Among the 56,066 participants, there were 8566 deaths from any cause, including 2196 from CVD and 1984 from cancer causes. Compared to participants in the lowest quintiles of the total DAC, those in the highest quintiles had 34% and 27% decreased risks of all-cause and CVD mortality, respectively (all-cause mortality: aHRs 0.66 [95% CI 0.57–0.76]; CVD mortality: aHRs 0.73 [95% CI 0.57–0.94]). More importantly, participants in the highest quintiles of the dinner DAC, but not those in that of breakfast or lunch, had a 24% decrease in all-cause mortality (aHRs 0.76 [95% CI 0.67–0.87]) compared with those in the lowest quintiles. Inverse associations were further confirmed for Δ DAC (aHRs 0.84 [95% CI 0.74–0.96]). Above associations did not change when including DAC from snacks or tea. Mediation analysis showed that the total associations of total, dinner or Δ DACs with reduced all-cause mortality were 24%, 13% and 6%, respectively, mediated by serum CRP. Additionally, all-cause mortality was decreased by 7% in models replacing 10% breakfast DAC (aHRs 0.93 [95% CI 0.9–0.97]) with an equivalent proportion of dinner DAC. For cancer mortality, no statistical significance was detected in the adjusted models.
Conclusions
The findings emphasize the putative beneficial relationship of a diet rich in antioxidants and meal timing on serum CRP and all-cause mortality.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of intraocular lens dislocation: an eight-year retrospective study
2025
To investigate the clinical characteristics, risk factors, and short-term visual outcomes following surgical management of intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation, aiming to inform risk stratification and individualized treatment strategies.
A retrospective analysis was conducted on 155 patients (166 eyes) diagnosed with IOL dislocation between 2016 and 2024. Data collected included demographic information, ocular and systemic risk factors, surgical interventions, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) before and after surgery, and postoperative complications. Comparative analyses were performed to assess the short-term efficacy and safety of different surgical approaches.
The mean patient age was 55 years, with 86.75% presenting unilateral dislocation. Predominant risk factors identified were high myopia (38.55%) and prior vitrectomy (17.47%). A total of 89.16% of IOL dislocations were classified as late-onset. Of the 154 eyes that underwent surgical intervention, both IOL repositioning and exchange procedures resulted in significant improvements in UDVA (P < 0.05). Postoperative transient intraocular pressure elevations were observed without significant differences between surgical methods, resolving within three days in all cases.
High myopia and prior vitrectomy are significant risk factors for IOL dislocation. Surgical correction, whether through repositioning or exchange, is effective and safe, leading to substantial visual acuity improvements. Proactive identification and management of high-risk individuals are crucial for preventing IOL dislocation and optimizing patient outcomes.

Integrating SIF and Clearness Index to Improve Maize GPP Estimation Using Continuous Tower-Based Observations
2020
Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has been proven to be well correlated with vegetation photosynthesis. Although multiple studies have found that SIF demonstrates a strong correlation with gross primary production (GPP), SIF-based GPP estimation at different temporal scales has not been well explored. In this study, we aimed to investigate the quality of GPP estimates produced using the far-red SIF retrieved at 760 nm (SIF760) based on continuous tower-based observations of a maize field made during 2017 and 2018, and to explore the responses of GPP and SIF to different meteorological conditions, such as the amount of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), the clearness index (CI, representing the weather condition), the air temperature (AT), and the vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Firstly, our results showed that the SIF760 tracked GPP well at both diurnal and seasonal scales, and that SIF760 was more linearly correlated to PAR than GPP was. Therefore, the SIF760–GPP relationship was clearly a hyperbolic relationship. For instantaneous observations made within a period of half an hour, the R2 value was 0.66 in 2017 and 2018. Based on daily mean observations, the R2 value was 0.82 and 0.76 in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Secondly, it was found that the SIF760–GPP relationship varied with the environmental conditions, with the CI being the dominant factor. At both diurnal and seasonal scales, the ratio of GPP to SIF760 decreased noticeably as the CI increased. Finally, the SIF760-based GPP models with and without the inclusion of CI were trained using 70% of daily observations from 2017 and 2018 and the models were validated using the remaining 30% of the dataset. For both linear and non-linear models, the inclusion of the CI greatly improved the SIF760-based GPP estimates based on daily mean observations: the value of R2 increased from 0.71 to 0.82 for the linear model and from 0.82 to 0.87 for the non-linear model. The validation results confirmed that the SIF760-based GPP estimation was improved greatly by including the CI, giving a higher R2 and a lower RMSE. These values improved from R2 = 0.66 and RMSE = 7.02 mw/m2/nm/sr to R2 = 0.76 and RMSE = 6.36 mw/m2/nm/sr for the linear model, and from R2 = 0.71 and RMSE = 4.76 mw/m2/nm/sr to R2 = 0.78 and RMSE = 3.50 mw/m2/nm/sr for the non-linear model. Therefore, our results demonstrated that SIF760 is a reliable proxy for GPP and that SIF760-based GPP estimation can be greatly improved by integrating the CI with SIF760. These findings will be useful in the remote sensing of vegetation GPP using satellite, airborne, and tower-based SIF data because the CI is usually an easily accessible meteorological variable.

Scaffold-based delivery of mesenchymal stromal cells to diabetic wounds
2022
Foot ulceration is a major complication of diabetes mellitus, which results in significant human suffering and a major burden on healthcare systems. The cause of impaired wound healing in diabetic patients is multifactorial with contributions from hyperglycaemia, impaired vascularization and neuropathy. Patients with non-healing diabetic ulcers may require amputation, creating an urgent need for new reparative treatments. Delivery of stem cells may be a promising approach to enhance wound healing because of their paracrine properties, including the secretion of angiogenic, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory factors. While a number of different cell types have been studied, the therapeutic use of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) has been widely reported to improve delayed wound healing. However, topical administration of MSCs via direct injection has several disadvantages, including low cell viability and poor cell localization at the wound bed. To this end, various biomaterial conformations have emerged as MSC delivery vehicles to enhance cell viability and persistence at the site of implantation. This paper discusses biomaterial-based MSCs therapies in diabetic wound healing and highlights the low conversion rate to clinical trials and commercially available therapeutic products.

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) provides a new and direct way of monitoring photosynthetic activity. However, current SIF products are limited by low spatial resolution or sparse sampling. In this paper, we present a data-driven method of generating a global, spatially continuous TanSat SIF product. Firstly, the key explanatory variables for modelling canopy SIF were investigated using in-situ and satellite observations. According to theoretical and experimental analysis, the solar radiation intensity was found to be a dominant driving environmental variable for the SIF yield at both the canopy and global scales; this has, however, been neglected in previous research. The cosine value of the solar zenith angle at noon (cos (SZA0)), a proxy for solar radiation intensity, was found to be a dominant abiotic factor for the SIF yield. Next, a Random Forest (RF) approach was employed for SIF prediction based on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) visible-to-NIR reflectance data, the normalized difference vegetation (NDVI), cos (SZA0), and air temperature. The machine learning model performed well at predicting SIF, giving R2 values of 0.73, an RMSE of 0.30 mW m−2 nm−1 sr−1 and a bias of 0.22 mW m−2 nm−1 sr−1 for 2018. If cos (SZA0) was not included, the accuracy of the RF model decreased: the R2 value was then 0.65, the RMSE 0.34 mW m−2 nm−1 sr−1 and an bias of 0.26 mW m−2 nm−1 sr−1, further verifying the importance of cos (SZA0). Finally, the globally continuous TanSat SIF product was developed and compared to the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) SIF data. The results showed that the globally continuous TanSat SIF product agreed well with the TROPOMI SIF data, with an R2 value of 0.73. Thus, this paper presents an improved approach to modelling satellite SIF that has a better accuracy, and the study also generated a global, spatially continuous TanSat SIF product with a spatial resolution of 0.05°.
