من أحداث الرواية : أتذكر أنه عندما كنت صبيا كنت أنا وابن عمي أمبروس نقوم بنزهة قرب الشاطئ ثم أخذني معه لنرى جثة رجل مشنوق متعفنة ومعلقة ومربوطة في سلاسل كان الرجل واسمه توم جنكن. قد أعدم لأنه ارتكب جريمة قتل فيها زوجته. قال لي أمبروس حينها إن الرجال لا يقتلون النساء لأنهن يتطاولن عليهم بألسنتهن الحادة وإلا أصبحوا بنظر القانون والأعراف بالإضافة أنهم قتله مجرمون إلا أنهم كذلك غير متزنين عقليا لا يسيطرون على غضبهم لأتفه الأسباب. ولكن ربما جريمة مثل هذه ترتكب لسبب آخر . قال هذه العبارة ولم يبد عليه أي تأثر بمنظر الجثة الكريهه.
