THE DARK SIDE OF EALING
In the first of a new quarterly series of features which will take an in-depth look at pivotal movements, genres or individuals in cinema history via a study of 12 key films, examined are the darker currents which ran through Ealing Studios' surprisingly diverse output. Besides the slightly cozy vision of post-war Britain as a land of loveable eccentrics, tight-knight communities and cheery public-spiritedness that ran through Ealing's comedies, the studio also embraced war films, noir, costume drama and social realism. Under Michael Balcon, Ealing was turned into an internationally recognized brand. The 12 films that are examined all come from the \"darker side\" of Ealing.
