How dealers can combat fraudulent vehicle purchases
Travon Demetrius Hardie, 25, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced in Maryland on Jan. 17 for his involvement in a scheme that fraudulently used the personal identifying information of at least 25 people to purchase at least 31 luxury vehicles, according to a Department of Justice release. Hardie and co-defendants John Paul Thompson Jr. and Nickolas Alexander Mathis created fake IDs with the stolen personal information, according to the release. Thompson and Mathis face a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison for wire fraud conspiracy and wire fraud, along with a mandatory sentence of two years in federal prison for aggravated identity theft.

Calif. lawmakers want to ban autonomous trucking; Proposed legislation requires a safety driver
The bill acts as a backstop in case the California Department of Motor Vehicles moves to allow autonomous trucks on the roads, Jason Rabinowitz, Teamsters Joint Council 7 president, told Automotive News. \"By prohibiting heavy-duty AVs, the reality is California has become an outlier,\" Ariel Wolf, the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association's general counsel, said at a California Department of Motor Vehicle's workshop on the regulations last month. The pushback against fully robotic trucks traveling on public roads also comes as autonomous trucking looks to become the first significant commercialization of self-driving technology in the U.S. Truck builders such as Daimler Truck Group and Volvo Trucks, along with autonomous driving technology companies such as Waymo and Aurora Innovation, are pushing to move freight with self-driving technology.
Wellness program slashes benefits costs; Team challenges inspire employees to engage in healthier habits
A wellness program implemented in 2021 by Friendship Family of Dealerships is helping the retailer lower its benefits costs for employees. The program at the Bristol, Tenn., dealership group encourages healthier lifestyle choices and is delivering improvements in team morale and increased productivity, said Alana Wilson, Friendship's human resources director. Since the program started, one of the group's health insurance plans has dropped in cost for employees by 26 percent, and the amount that Friendship's medical plan paid out per employee dropped by 23 percent, she said.
