Passions and ruptures in the correspondence of Rosalie Jullien (1792-1795)
Rosalie Jullien, a citizen close to the Montagnards, is the author of a lengthy correspondence in which she recounts the Revolution. She evokes the very serious crises between the fall of the monarchy and the consequences of Thermidor: the September massacres, the execution of the king, the Girondins-Montagnards rupture, the assassination of Marat, and the imprisonment of her son who was not released from prison until October 1795. Combining national history and private life, this correspondence reveals the complexity of the moment. The reader perceives the erosion of her revolutionary zeal in the face of violence difficult to understand.
Starting from the well-documented observation of the important role caricatures played in the emergence of public opinion, this article will demonstrate why such or such an animal had been chosen by such or such a group or in such or such a circumstance. This effort at establishing an animal alphabet primer will review different animal “stars” (pigs, ostrich, crane, snake, frog, crawfish and so forth) classifying them according to the factions that produced these images and by the moment of their circulation.
