Education for Sustainable Development – Securitization in International, National and Local Settings? A Critical Study of Environmental Security in Policies, Education Reforms and Teaching Practices in Sweden
The study focused on environmental security in relation to international and national aims of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) to explore if ESD can be understood as being part of a globally implemented securitization process with national empirical studies in Sweden. The perception of environmental threats was first set with regard to international environmental agreements and, mainly, UNESCO’s policy aims of ESD. Expressions, statements and undertakings related to environmental threats were examined through a content analysis of education reform policies. Results demonstrated that the implementation of ESD varied depending on the usage of educational programs and individual understanding of ESD at different societal levels. Individual initiatives among teachers played a significant role in this process. It was also shown that securitization took place both horizontally and vertically and that securitization could be re-activated at the existing societal level although the previous one had ignored the impact of environmental threats to society.

Ukrainian Education under Attack: Securitization and Education Change in Ukraine
The study explores the conflict between Russia and Ukraine where the overall aim is to comprehend the impact of the armed conflict on the education sector and education from a securitization perspective. The development of the crisis from a securitization perspective in eastern Ukraine is shown to directly influence the educational conditions for children. In several areas near the conflict zone, military installations close to schools are a cause for security concern. The military installations are possible targets meaning that children are exposed to danger during school hours. The study also focused on how children and young people play a significant role in conflicts. In their vulnerable position, they become subjected to various types of socialization processes aimed at preserving the defense interests of the Ukrainian State, while regional and global actors are trying to reduce conflicts in the region through efforts advocating democracy and peace education. The study also highlights nationalistic tendencies on both sides of the conflict and the role that patriotic training as well as patriotic education take in fostering an active citizen through identity construction.

Facilitating in-school collaborative learning for teachers' professional practice in an irish primary school
The focus of this self-study action research is the facilitation of teachers' engagement in collaborative inquiry to improve practice. The purpose of the inquiry was two-fold: primarily to improve the quality of teaching and learning of writing, within the English curriculum, in a primary school in Ireland; secondly, it was to improve my understanding of the issues and practices involved in leading school-based professional learning. In year one of the research, I worked with the school's staff to develop structures and processes supporting participants' action learning about collaborative inquiry. Following a multi-level model of intervention, teacher learning teams became the foundation stone of the intervention. While pedagogical content knowledge was the focus of much of the inquiry at base team level, critical examination of cultural norms of practice through collective reflection typified the professional dialogue at whole school level. The moral dimension of teacher professionalism anchored the intervention and was mediated through an unwavering commitment to dialogic action and inquiry. Data gathering and analysis served to assess the impact of the strategies on improving professional as well as student learning. Findings highlighted the significance of teacher-to-teacher discourse in shaping teacher learning; and teachers' commitment to adopting an incremental approach to learning illustrated in a co-created model of staged development. In year two the teachers pushed out the boundaries of current norms, by observing peer practice. The findings from data gathering in phase two, informed by discourse analysis of videoed post-observation conferences, led to the creation of conceptual models of practice for peer professional dialogue. The findings emphasise the need to create system-wide structures in Ireland to support embedded professional learning and suggest that teacher collaboration, rooted in professional values and supported by purposeful capacity building has the potential to replace autonomy as valued practice in Irish schools.

Prepare yourself for cyber noir
Nothing is quite what it seems in this intriguingly devised science-fiction opus, which is put together with such sheer panache it hardly matters that there's rather less to it than meets the eye. Making the scheme that drove The Truman Show seem benevolent by comparison, the present-day setting of The Matrix is, in fact, a dystopian future world where humans live in a state of false reality and everything is a total fabrication created by sinister humanoid computers. Laurence Fishburne authoritatively plays Morpheus, the leader of a small band of human rebels, and Keanu Reeves is ideally cast as the wide-eyed protagonist, Thomas Anderson, a laid-back computer hacker whom they identify as the potential saviour of our race. A reluctant hero, he's told he is The One, and he's re-named Neo - an anagram of \"one\", as it happens - and introduced to new layers of reality as the rebels prepare to fight back. This premise is infused with dollops of spiritual philosophy which is there to be bought into or glossed over in a movie where form truly triumphs over content. The screenplay by the [Andy] Wachowski brothers abounds with references - to the Bible, Greek mythology, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, cyberpunk novels, and to other movies such as Blade Runner, Total Recall, the two Termi- nator pictures, Hong Kong action cinema and the work of John Woo, and the violent Japanese anime cartoon genre. The Wachowski brothers were writers for Marvel Comics before making their first film, the stylised, atmospheric, lesbian-themed, film noir, Bound. The Matrix, their second film, is cyber noir with its dark, metallic tones, recurring torrential rain and absence of sunshine - even though the characters, like rock stars in night-clubs, wear smartly designed sunglasses all the time. Under the guidance of the Hong Kong action maestro Yuen Wo Ping, the actors perform most of their own stunts with the aid of invisible wires - leaping and staying suspended in mid-air, running up and across walls and somersaulting as if they were defying gravity, and engaging in vigorous, balletic kung fu fighting. Driven by a pumping techno score, the breathless pace of the movie is heightened further by the use of revolutionary rapid-fire photography in which an actor appears to move faster than a speeding bullet. The Matrix is a singular audio-visual experience. Expect at least one sequel.
