Design analysis
2010
The authors describe the findings of the Across Design project, a joint project funded by MIT and Cambridge University, previously described in this journal in Witnesses to Design, Design Issues 25 (1) pp.36-47. Professional designers, in a series of research workshops, were invited to report on their design practice in a project of their choice in their own fields of clothing, architecture, typography, engineering, and software. The findings were as follows: an unexpected commonality of design experience; many were motivated mainly by the recognition of their professional design peers; the physical interaction with their materials and tools was important in providing direction and inspiration; many designers had surprisingly little contact with end users of their products, often projecting their own vision on to anticipated markets; choice of appropriate communication tools was important to mutual understanding between the designers and their teams and clients; often the designers' role seemed to be to implement public policy, for example by environmental regulations or in publicly sponsored projects; the designers were concerned by the structure of the design profession, for example where international competition was seen as devaluing design values or eroding traditional skills.
