Coral growth, survivorship and return-on-effort within nurseries at high-value sites on the Great Barrier Reef
Coral reefs are deteriorating worldwide prompting reef managers and stakeholders to increasingly explore new management tools. Following back-to-back bleaching in 2016/2017, multi-taxa coral nurseries were established in 2018 for the first time on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) to aid reef maintenance and restoration at a “high-value” location–Opal Reef–frequented by the tourism industry. Various coral species (n = 11) were propagated within shallow water (ca. 4-7m) platforms installed across two sites characterised by differing environmental exposure–one adjacent to a deep-water channel (Blue Lagoon) and one that was relatively sheltered (RayBan). Growth rates of coral fragments placed onto nurseries were highly variable across taxa but generally higher at Blue Lagoon (2.1–10.8 cm 2 month -1 over 12 months) compared to RayBan (0.6–6.6 cm 2 month -1 over 9 months). Growth at Blue Lagoon was largely independent of season, except for Acropora tenuis and Acropora hyacinthus , where growth rates were 15–20% higher for December 2018-July 2019 (“warm season”) compared to August-December 2018 (“cool season”). Survivorship across all 2,536 nursery fragments was ca. 80–100%, with some species exhibiting higher survivorship at Blue Lagoon ( Acropora loripes , Porites cylindrica ) and others at RayBan ( A . hyacinthus , Montipora hispida ). Parallel measurements of growth and survivorship were used to determine relative return-on-effort (RRE) scores as an integrated metric of “success” accounting for life history trade-offs, complementing the mutually exclusive assessment of growth or survivorship. RRE scores within sites (across species) were largely driven by growth, whereas RRE scores between sites were largely driven by survivorship. The initial nursery phase of coral propagation therefore appears useful to supplement coral material naturally available for stewardship of frequently visited Great Barrier Reef tourism (high-value) sites, but further assessment is needed to evaluate how well the growth rates and survival for nursery grown corals translate once material is outplanted.

Reef visitors’ observation of assisted coral recovery devices in situ reduces concern about their use
Assisted coral recovery (ACR) initiatives are establishing rapidly in coral reefs worldwide, using a variety of devices and techniques. In the Great Barrier Reef (GBR, the Reef), site-scale ACR field trials are occurring at multiple sites in the Cairns-Port Douglas region through Reef stewardship activities involving GBR tourism operators, Traditional Owners, and not-for-profit organisations. It is hypothesised that these field trials and the presence of ACR devices at reef tourism sites do not negatively affect visitor experiences, and when accompanied by appropriate educational information, can potentially help to raise awareness of Reef stewardship and conservation efforts. We tested these hypotheses using a survey of 708 Reef visitors on five tourism vessels, 346 of whom reported observing ACR devices in situ during their coral reef experience. Ordinal regression tests of survey responses found no statistical relationship between respondents’ observation of ACR devices and (i) their overall Reef trip satisfaction, (ii) the perceived aesthetic beauty of the site(s) they visited, and (iii) their concern about the future health of the GBR. However, Reef visitors who observed ACR devices showed significantly lower levels of concern about the use of these devices on the Reef. The perceived quality of educational information presented to respondents was among the significant factors associated with their reef trip satisfaction and perceived beauty of reef sites. Our findings have implications for ACR practitioners and proponents who are concerned about public visibility, perceptions, and support for ACR initiatives, as the scale of such initiatives is expected to increase.
Out of Time: Malfunctioning and Neglected Clocks and Watches in Dickens's Fiction
Clocks and watches abound in Dickens's fiction and, oddly, a substantial number either malfunction or are abandoned. What is the significance of these ailing or discarded timepieces? Against a background of the increasing importance of objectively measured time in Victorian lives and business, this paper considers their symbolic roles in relation to the characters with which they are connected. Dickens's malfunctioning or disregarded clocks and watches are usually indicative of mental, physical or financial breakdown and often reveal the psychological state of their owners. Overwhelmingly, they are associated with impending ill fate and frequently with death. Invariably, they represent a challenge to or a disruption of the regular progress of life, whatever that might be. The paper explores in detail how Dickens uses the symbolic potential of these objects through textual analysis of a wide range of instances from the novels.
Early-stage outcomes and cost-effectiveness of implementing tourism-led coral propagation and outplanting in the Whitsundays (Great Barrier Reef)
Implementation of coral restoration practices within reef management strategies is accelerating globally to support reef resilience and recovery. However, full costs underpinning restoration project feasibility have historically been underreported yet are critical to informing restoration cost-benefit decision-making. Such knowledge is especially lacking for Australia’s Great Barrier Reef (GBR), where a coral restoration program led by reef tourism operators, Coral Nurture Program (CNP), was initiated in 2018 (northern GBR) and continues to scale. Here we describe the early outcomes and costs of implementing similar tourism-led asexual coral propagation and outplanting practices in a new region, the Whitsundays (central GBR) through the CNP. Specifically, we detail the local operational and environmental context of CNP Whitsundays, describe the costs of implementation and continuation of restoration activities, as well as evaluate survivorship of coral outplants across three restoration sites for nine months after project establishment (August 2022 to June 2023). Baseline benthic surveys revealed relatively low hard coral cover at restoration sites (ranging from 3.22-8.67%), which significantly differed in benthic composition from coral collection sites (ranging 16.67-38.06%), supporting strong motivation by tourism operators to undertake restoration activities. Mean coral survivorship of coral outplants in fate-tracked plots differed between the three restoration sites after 267 days (ranging 23.33-47.58%), with declines largely driven by coral detachment. Early-stage cost-effectiveness (costs relative to outplant survival) associated with implementation of restoration activity varied widely from US$33.04-178.55 per surviving coral (n = 4,425 outplants) depending on whether ‘in-kind’ costs, restoration activity (outplanting only vs. total costs encompassing planning through to monitoring), site-based survivorship, or a combination of these factors, were considered. As coral reef restoration projects continue to be established globally, our results highlight the need for ongoing, long-term monitoring that can inform adaptive practice, and fully transparent cost-reporting to understand and improve feasibility for any given project. We further highlight the inherent context-dependency of restoration costs, and the importance of considering local social-environmental contexts and their associated cost-benefits in economic rationale for reef restoration projects.
Assessing how metal reef restoration structures shape the functional and taxonomic profile of coral-associated bacterial communities
Significant threats to the long-term persistence of coral reefs have accelerated the adoption of coral propagation and out-planting approaches. However, how materials commonly used for propagation structures could potentially affect coral-associated bacterial communities remains untested. Here, we examined the impact of metal propagation structures on coral-associated bacterial communities. Fragments of the coral species Acropora millepora were grown on aluminium, sand/epoxy-coated steel (Reef Stars), and uncoated steel (rebar) structures. After 6 months, the functional and taxonomic profiles of coral-associated bacterial communities of propagated corals and reef colonies were characterised using amplicon (16S rRNA gene) and shotgun metagenomic sequencing. No differences in the phylogenetic structure or functional profile of coral-associated bacterial communities were observed between propagated corals and reef colonies. However, specific genes and pathways (e.g., lipid, nucleotide, and carbohydrate metabolism) were overrepresented in corals grown on different materials, and different taxa were indicative of the materials. These findings indicate that coral propagation on different materials may lead to differences in the individual bacterial taxa and functional potential of coral-associated bacterial communities, but how these contribute to changed holobiont fitness presents a key question to be addressed.
Factors determining ultra-short-term survival and the commencement of active treatment in high-grade serous ovarian cancer: a case comparison study
Background Despite improvements in median survival some patients with advanced ovarian cancer die within 100 days of diagnosis; the reasons for which remain poorly understood. Here we investigate if ultra short-term survival can be explained by patient characteristics or treatment pathways. Methods A nested case comparison study was used to examine differences between patients with high grade serous ovarian/fallopian tube cancer who died within 100 days ( n  = 28) compared to a comparison group of patients matched for histology and including any survival greater than 100 days ( n  = 134). Results Cases and comparison patients had similar ages, BMI, ACE-27, deprivation indices, and distribution of disease on CT. There were no significant delays in time to diagnosis or treatment ( p  = 0.68) between the groups. However, cases had lower serum albumin, haemoglobin and higher platelet counts than matched comparison patients ( p  < 0.0001) and a worse performance score ( P  = 0.006). Conclusion Patients who die rapidly after a diagnosis of ovarian cancer are only slightly older and have similar pre treatment frailty compared to patients whose survival approaches the median. However they do appear to undergo greater physiological compromise as a result of their disease.
Mangrove lagoons of the Great Barrier Reef support coral populations persisting under extreme environmental conditions
Global degradation of coral reefs has increased the urgency of identifying stress-tolerant coral populations, to enhance understanding of the bio logy driving stress tolerance, as well as identifying stocks of stress-hardened populations to aid reef rehabilitation. Surprisingly, scientists are continually discovering that naturally extreme environments house established coral populations adapted to grow within extreme abiotic conditions comparable to seawater conditions predicted over the coming century. Such environments include inshore mangrove lagoons that carry previously unrecognised ecosystem service value for corals, spanning from refuge to stress preconditioning. However, the existence of such hot-spots of resilience on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) remains entirely unknown. Here we describe, for the first time, 2 extreme GBR mangrove lagoons (Woody Isles and Howick Island), exposing taxonomically diverse coral communities (34 species, 7 growth morphologies) to regular extreme low pH (<7.6), low oxygen (<1 mg l−1) and highly variable temperature range (>7°C) conditions. Coral cover was typically low (<5%), but highly patchy and included established colonies (>0.5 m diameter), with net photosynthesis and calcification rates of 2 dominant coral species (Acropora millepora, Porites lutea) reduced (20−30%), and respiration enhanced (11−35%), in the mangrove lagoon relative to adjacent reefs. Further analysis revealed that physiological plasticity (photosynthetic ‘strategy’) and flexibility of Symbiodiniaceae taxa associations appear crucial in supporting coral capacity to thrive from reef to lagoon. Prevalence of corals within these extreme conditions on the GBR (and elsewhere) increasingly challenge our understanding of coral resilience to stressors, and highlight the need to study unfavourable coral environments to better resolve mechanisms of stress tolerance.
