Standards for delivering ultrasound surveillance for hepatocellular cancer in the UK
2025
Early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) through effective surveillance is critical to improving patient outcomes. These UK national guidelines provide consensus-based standards for ultrasound (US) surveillance in individuals at risk of HCC, with the aim of enhancing diagnostic quality, consistency and service delivery. Developed by a multidisciplinary expert group, the guidelines define key components of a high-quality surveillance programme, including image acquisition protocols, structured reporting using a validated classification system, appropriate training requirements and pathways for audit and quality assurance. Emphasis is placed on equity of access, patient-centred care and improving adherence. These standards are designed to support healthcare professionals, commissioners, and service providers in delivering robust HCC surveillance across the NHS, ultimately contributing to earlier diagnosis and improved survival.

Collaborating across new media and gender: Co-writing f2m: the boy within social media online & the case (study) of a controversial YA novel
2010
Hazel Edwards' online collaboration for her 200th book, on a young adult novel, f2m: the boy within, is presented. The novel was co-authored by New Zealand-based Ryan Kennedy, who lived as a female until his transition to male at age twenty-seven. Since the February 2010 print publication by Ford Street Publishing, social media has influenced reviewing young adult fiction. The Edwards-Kennedy online literary process has become as timely as the topical, little-understood and formerly taboo subject of gender transition. Here, they discuss how to humanize rather than sensationalize the process and to stress the 'coming of age' of the fictional character but also the electronic 'coming of age' for professional 'book people' in new ways of fast evaluation via social media.

INDEPENDENT REPORTING SONOGRAPHERS
2017
Other groups including midwives, obstetricians, emergency physicians and abdominal aortic aneurysm screening technicians, also contribute to services. Currently in the UK, CASE accredits both full training programmes (postgraduate certificate, diploma and MSc) in a range of clinical areas, and short focused courses, including aortic aneurysm screening, first trimester screening, third trimester growth scanning and ultrasound for rheumatology9. Many training centres require an element of report writing in the academic assessments, such as objective structured examinations (OSEs) where trainees are provided with clinical images and asked to write a report, offer a conclusion and suggest alternative investigations or management of the patient. Oversight of training programmes by a central multiprofessional body such as CASE, interprofessional education, on-going clinical audit of report writing and clinical practice, can all be used to maintain on-going high quality standards both in the UK and for countries wishing to develop the sonography service.
