Crisis and continuity at the Abbasid court : formal and informal politics in the caliphate of al-Muqtadir (295-320/908-32)
2013
The reign of al-Muqtadir (295-320/908-32) is a crucial epoch in Abbasid history. Four scholars question the picture of decline attached to this period, exploring the formal and informal power relationships that shaped politics at the court of this caliph.
Divorce: A View from Abbasid Adab Collections
2019
This article discusses the subject of divorce in three Abbasid adab texts, 'Uyūn al-akhbār by Ibn Qutayba (d. 889 CE), al-'Iqd al-farīd by Ibn 'Abd Rabbih (d. 940 CE), and the thirteenth-century CE Akhbār al-nisā' by Pseudo Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya. The material on divorce in these compilations will be used and compared. In the first part of the article, I review important caveats and concerns when dealing with adab compilations. In the second part of the article, I discuss the material on divorce in these adab anthologies. By examining these adab texts internally, the analysis focuses on the issues the authors/compilers of these volumes chose to discuss, the stories selected for inclusion, and the terms in which the stories and the issues discussed in them were presented. This approach allows for the incorporation of both women and men into the discussion and helps us further develop a new historiographical approach to uncover the legal personalities of early Islamic women and the realities of Abbasid-era domestic law.

This paper investigates the eunuch's institution in the court of the Abbasid caliph al-Muqtadir and seeks, first, to delineate the variety of functions that the eunuchs held in the early fourth/tenth century Abbasid court both in the harem and in ceremonial; second, it investigates the careers of the eunuchs Sāfī al-Huramī and Muflih al-Khādim al-Aswad, exploring their sources of authority and their various networks which allowed them to exercise a high degree of political influence.

Revisiting the Abbasid Harems
2005
Cheikh presents a detailed investigation of harems at a particular historical moment, the 10th century Baghdad. Among other concerns, she discusses the static timeless nature of the harem by moving beyond the parameters of Orientalism and the level of theoretical abstraction. She endeavors to dispute the Orientalist literature that refers to the harem in the singular, and contends there were a variety of living arrangements for women in Islamic households.

Sūrat Al-Rūm: A Study of the Exegetical Literature
This paper analyzes the exegetical texts pertaining to the opening verses of Sūrat al-Rūm (30: 1-5) concerning the Byzantine-Persian wars of the early seventh century, and attempts to establish a \"history of reader reaction to the Qurʾān.\" Consultation of a number of commentaries down to the late fourteenth century and study of various interpretations given to these verses reveal that the very understanding of Sūrat al-Rūm was influenced by the fluctuating relationship between the Islamic and Byzantine states and by the general historical developments affecting the Near East. By scrutinizing the various grammatical constructions and interpretations given to these verses, one is able to construct trends and motivations in exegesis. However, this study also clearly reveals that no matter how elaborate and contorted the explanations were, the exegetical tradition exercised a strong and constraining influence.
