Stacey Coolidge's fancy-smancy handwriting : a story about staying true to yourself
Carolyn loves second grade until her difficulty with handwriting shakes her confidence. Stacey Coolidge is the best at handwriting. She hardly ever uses her eraser. But Carolyn isn't doing as well. Carolyn has been practicing cursive handwriting every day for weeks, and not only is she not going to get to play with Frederick, the class guinea pig, but her handwriting is also not much better than a guinea pig's. It's a good thing that her teacher, Mrs. Thompson, is able to turn her frustration into confidence.
Last to finish in math class : a story about learning differently
Max is convinced he will never succeed at memorizing his multiplication tables. When it's time for a test, one by one, Max's classmates turn in their finished papers before the timer rings. Not Max. As soon as the teacher starts the timer, his heart begins to pound. Once his heart begins to pound, his hands begin to sweat and his brain freezes! This positive story depicts a student who struggles with learning by memorization. Max discovers that he is not bad at math, but rather he just learns math differently from others (and maybe gets a little nervous when tests are timed).
