COVID-19 caused an increase in the demand for medications, which led to an increase in pharmaceutical waste and there is no doubt that this contributes to environmental pollution. Hence, it became necessary to search for how to protect and improve the environment by encouraging the behavior of medication waste reduction. Accordingly, this study aims to investigate the factors affecting intentions to reduce medication waste. Considering this, we develop an extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) framework by incorporating the constructs of moral obligation, environmental awareness, and medication waste risk perception. Using the convenience sampling method and based on a self-administered questionnaire, a total of 225 usable responses were collected in five Algerian cities. The results showed that positive attitudes (β = 0.316, p < 0.001), moral obligation (β = 0.291, p < 0.001), environmental awareness (β = 0.227, p < 0.001), perceived behavior control (PBC) (β = 0.151, p = 0.001), greater perceived risks (β = 0.127, p < 0.001), and subjective norm (β = 0.096, p < 0.05) significantly and positively influence the medication waste minimization intention. Furthermore, our analyses revealed that the extended TPB model explained 73.40% of the intention variance. In conclusion, we have explored the intentions, and there may be a gap between intent and actual behavior. Therefore, we recommend future studies to examine the factors affecting the actual behavior of medication waste reduction and to investigate environmental ethics and religious commitment as predictors of waste reduction intentions.

Intentions to Create Green Start-Ups for Collection of Unwanted Drugs: An Empirical Study

Drug waste poses a real threat to human health and the environment. Therefore, recycling and sustainability scholars have recently sought practical solutions to the drug waste problem. Furthermore, several governments have made significant efforts to reduce the negative effects of waste, such as establishing programs to take back unwanted drugs (expired and unused) for recycling (i.e., drug reuse or drug redispersing). However, many of these programs have failed to achieve their goals. In this context, it is expected that creating green start-ups to collect unwanted drugs will contribute to solving this problem. Accordingly, this study aims to investigate the antecedents of intentions to create green start-ups for collecting unwanted drugs. To this end, the authors integrate start-up self-efficacy and drug waste collection-related knowledge constructs into the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Using a self-administered paper questionnaire and relying on a convenience sample, data were collected from 328 students in six Algerian universities. A hierarchical multiple regression was conducted to test the proposed study model. Theresults revealed that perceived behavioral control (PBC) (β = 0.187, p < 0.001), attitudes (β = 0.182, p = 0.002), start-up self-efficacy (β = 0.169, p = 0.001), drug waste collection-related knowledge (β = 0.161, p < 0.001), and subjective norms (β = 0.088, p < 0.05) have a positive significant effect on the intention to create a start-up to collect unwanted drugs. In conclusion, this paper contributes to reducing drug waste by investigating the drivers of intention to create green start-ups for collecting unwanted drugs. Therefore, our study is expected to provide valuable insights for hospitals, pharmacies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, environmental protection associations, and stakeholders interested in reverse logistics.

The rapid expansion of digital platforms has significantly influenced consumer purchasing behaviors, particularly in the agri-food sector. Therefore, this paper investigates the key factors driving customers’ intention to use green agri-food delivery apps (GAFDAs) by integrating trust and electronic word of mouth (eWOM) into the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework. Additionally, this study examines gender as a moderating variable, assessing whether its influence alters the relationships between key determinants and behavioral intention. Data were collected from 252 Algerian consumers, and the proposed model was tested using SmartPLS 4 and SPSS 26.0. The results confirm that attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control (PBC), trust, and eWOM positively and significantly influence the intention to use GAFDAs, with PBC emerging as the strongest predictor. Moreover, gender moderates the effect of trust on behavioral intention, with trust significantly influencing men’s adoption decisions but not those of females. In contrast, subjective norms and PBC are stronger predictors for female consumers. These findings highlight the importance of gender-specific marketing strategies to enhance GAFDA adoption. This study contributes to the literature by extending TPB with trust, eWOM, and gender moderation, offering valuable insights for marketers, policymakers, and app developers promoting sustainable food consumption.

Black Women Faculty and Administrators Navigating COVID-19, Social Unrest, and Academia: Challenges and Strategies

Black women faculty and administrators in the United States are tackling a force of socioeconomic and racial disparities, emotional tolls and invisible burdens within academia, political turmoil, social unrest, and public health crises. COVID-19 has added an additional layer related to work responsibilities, the overall well-being of Black women faculty and administrators and the diverse students they encounter, and management of work and home responsibilities. This paper discusses perspectives and evidence-based strategies regarding Black women faculty and administrators who navigate academia and teach during times of COVID-19 and social unrest. We also outline strategies for university leaders to mitigate cultural and racial gaps in the classroom or workplace and foster diversity and inclusion in academia.

Conversations across the table: shared cognition in top management teams

Purpose
This paper aims to examine the shared mental models (SMMs) of a top management team (TMT) using an emergent perspective in conditions of uncertainty. The paper examines how a TMT conversation represents an emergent cognitive process to reach an action for future planning.
Design/methodology/approach
The design uses an emergent SMM approach based on a TMT discussion in an uncertain context. Cognitive mapping techniques illustrate how concepts emerge and are structured. This approach addresses the need for an alternative to aggregate mapping methods and supports the notion of team cognition as an emergent and dynamic process.
Findings
Findings showed that the emergence of a SMM could be elicited and represented using cognitive mapping techniques. Domain knowledge and social relationships supported the emergence of shared knowledge relevant for action on team tasks. A SMM based on team contribution and concept connectivity was identified.
Research limitations/implications
The study is based on data collected from a recorded discussion in a quarterly company meeting, ten days before the UK’s original planned exit date, March 2019.
Originality/value
This research study contributes to the SMM and team cognition literature streams by examining the TMT’s shared understanding as an emergent process. Empirical studies using cognitive mapping techniques in this context are rare.

Black women in the United States (U.S.) disproportionately experience adverse pregnancy outcomes, including maternal mortality, compared to women of other racial and ethnic groups. Historical legacies of institutionalized racism and bias in medicine compound this problem. The disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color may further worsen existing racial disparities in maternal morbidity and mortality. This paper discusses structural and social determinants of racial disparities with a focus on the Black maternal mortality crisis in the United States. We explore how structural racism contributes to a greater risk of adverse obstetric outcomes among Black women in the U.S. We also propose public health, healthcare systems, and community-engaged approaches to decrease racial disparities in maternal morbidity and mortality.

Integrating higher degree education with practice: exploring the value proposition of executive MBA apprenticeships

PurposeThe study aims to explore how the collective representations of stakeholders associated with an Executive MBA (EMBA) apprenticeship are conceptualised, and what value elements are perceived as relevant for personal, professional and organisational development.Design/methodology/approachForty stakeholders participated in a mixed methods-based group concept mapping (GCM) approach, representing the tripartite relationship of an EMBA apprenticeship. This approach allowed the deconstruction and shared understanding of the value proposition of higher degree apprenticeships.FindingsAnalysis identified seven conceptualised value clusters around an eight central cluster “Professional Development”. Two regions of meaning were identified: the personal dimensions of apprentices and their contribution within and to their organisation. Findings showed that a work-based designed curriculum improves confidence and communication skills and that much of the value proposition is personal and self-managed by the apprentices. The tripartite relationship was shown to be incomplete and inconsistent, particularly regarding mentoring and reflective practice.Practical implicationsThe pandemic has brought about significant changes in business practice. This study identifies several areas for improving higher degree apprenticeship pedagogy in readiness for the new business landscape, as well as identifying limitations of the tripartite relationship.Originality/valueThe study addresses a gap in the literature by exploring the value proposition an EMBA apprenticeship programme. The interrelatedness of cluster concepts has identified value elements missing from previous apprenticeship delivery. Deconstructing the senior leader apprenticeship enables educators to redesign and refine models of engagement for improving the apprenticeship experience.

Exploring Decision-Making: An Information Processing Perspective

Abstract
Adopting a dual processing cognitive perspective, this study explores the decision-making processes past the start-up stage that small entrepreneurial businesses employ to grow. The author examines how entrepreneurs evaluate and make decisions on growth opportunities in their business environment. The author uses cognitive style as a theoretical lens to capture differences in information processing, combining interviews and psychometric questionnaires to analyse cognitive styles. The longitudinal mixed methods approach illustrates the richness of the entrepreneur’s decision-making process, which the author tracks over a two-year period. The author determines how intuitive and analytical cognitive styles are used by entrepreneurs and the contribution these styles make to decision-making. The findings show that the two cognitive styles are versatile as entrepreneurs adjust and adapt their cognitive style over time, in keeping with the situational factors of their business environment. The author also finds marked differences between novice and mature entrepreneurs and that experienced entrepreneurs exhibited greater levels of cognitive versatility, which was directly linked to their prior experience. The study has significant implications for future research, which should consider the question how an entrepreneur’s cognitive style is dependent on the business context and their prior experience.

Exploring How Entrepreneurs Make Decisions on the Growth of Their Business : a Cognitive Perspective

The purpose of this study was to explore how entrepreneurs, who are past the start-up stage of business, evaluate and make decisions on growth opportunities. Small business growth is a complex, dynamic and episodic phenomenon and prior research on firm growth has emphasised cross-sectional approaches, rather than view growth as a dynamic process over time. Understanding small business entrepreneurs’ cognition and behaviours when making opportunity-related decisions will show how growth decisions are made. It is still unclear what cognitive styles and knowledge structures entrepreneurs use to process and frame information for opportunity-related decision-making. A closer look at opportunity evaluation, decision-making and entrepreneurial cognition revealed fragmentation, research gaps and areas for future research recommended by key scholars. As a consequence of this, an integrated process approach was taken using these three research streams. Specifically, a cognitive style lens, as a complex construct with multiple dimensions was used for viewing opportunity-related decisions, an approach missing from the opportunity evaluation literature. Additionally, the study was conceptually underpinned by dual process theory, the cognitive experiential self-theory or CEST. A longitudinal, concurrent triangulation design was used to explore the decision-making process over five time points in a two-year period. A mixed methods approach supported the pragmatic paradigm for an exploratory study. A multiple-case strategy used a sample of 11 small manufacturing entrepreneurs, from novice to mature, with 3-30 years’ experience as owner-manager. Data was collected at each time point using semi-structured interviews and two style assessments, the CoSI and REI. Quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis for the qualitative data. Combining interviews and psychometric questionnaires for triangulation produced robust findings. Data was used to construct cognitive maps and cognitive complexity for insight. Findings showed entrepreneurs were high on more than one style and switched between styles according to context, demonstrating styles were orthogonal. A unique finding was a synthesised, versatile style observed as a ‘mirror effect’ between the analytical and intuitive styles. Novices developed a more intuitive style over time, contingent with experience. A developing link in the novices’ mental structures showed how past experience increased cognitive complexity and connectivity. A further unique finding showed the central concept ‘Thinks it through’ in the decision process as a structural conduit or 'Hub' for both analytical and intuitive processing. Analysis suggested that cognitive complexity mediated the relationship between creative and experiential information styles and successful opportunity-related decision-making effectiveness. These unique findings show opportunity-related decisions as a dynamic, time-based process. The time-based model provided a framework for future opportunity evaluation research as a contribution to theory. Likewise, a dual process and information processing perspective has offered an alternative structure for examining opportunity evaluation. Finally, a teaching model was developed to improve metacognitive thinking and connectivity for decision-making effectiveness as a contribution to practice.

Differential regulation of TCR-induced ZFP36 and ZFP36L1 expression by cyclosporin A in CD8+ T cells

CD8+ T cells target infected or malignant cells via the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and direct target cell killing. Members of the ZFP36-family of RNA binding proteins, ZFP36 and ZFP36L1 regulate these functions in T cells via the regulation of mRNA stability and protein translation. We investigate the regulation of ZFP36 and ZFP36L1 expression using in vitro differentiated OT1 TCR transgenic memory-like T cells. We characterise the differential kinetics and sensitivity of ZFP36 and ZFP36L1 to antigen affinity and PMA versus ionomycin stimulation. By selectively inhibiting TCR-induced signalling pathways, we find that p38 MAPK, MEK1/2 and PKC contribute to inducing both ZFP36 and ZFP36L1 expression. By contrast, inhibition of calcineurin using cyclosporin A potently inhibits ZFP36L1 expression while increasing and prolonging ZFP36 expression. The Zfp36 promoter contains many binding sites for the transcription factors ELK-1/4 and few binding sites for NFAT, while the Zfp36l1 promoter contains many NFAT binding sites and few ELK1/4 binding sites. Our findings suggest that regulation of divergent transcription factors enable calcineurin to act as a signalling node that mediates the differential regulation of ZFP36 and ZFP36L1 during T cell activation.
