The impact of over 80 years of land cover changes on bee and wasp pollinator communities in England

Change in land cover is thought to be one of the key drivers of pollinator declines, and yet there is a dearth of studies exploring the relationships between historical changes in land cover and shifts in pollinator communities. Here, we explore, for the first time, land cover changes in England over more than 80 years, and relate them to concurrent shifts in bee and wasp species richness and community composition. Using historical data from 14 sites across four counties, we quantify the key land cover changes within and around these sites and estimate the changes in richness and composition of pollinators. Land cover changes within sites, as well as changes within a 1 km radius outside the sites, have significant effects on richness and composition of bee and wasp species, with changes in edge habitats between major land classes also having a key influence. Our results highlight not just the land cover changes that may be detrimental to pollinator communities, but also provide an insight into how increases in habitat diversity may benefit species diversity, and could thus help inform policy and practice for future land management.

Nomenclature, Narrative, and Novum: “The Anthropocene” and/as Science Fiction

Building on recent critical conversations about “science fictionality” as a quality that is present in, but not necessarily tethered to, the literary genre of science fiction, this essay articulates scientific and critical debates about the Anthropocene in terms of cognitive estrangement. It argues that the term “Anthropocene” acts simultaneously as nomenclature, as narrative, and as novum. Different definitions of and variations on “the Anthropocene” invoke varying narratives with specific origins, settings, characters, and resolutions. Meanwhile, each of these narratives has a distinct novum that produces different kinds of cognitively estranging relationships to hegemonic histories of Western modernity. The science fictionality of “the Anthropocene” as a concept reveals not only the strategic activation of cognitive estrangement beyond the bounds of science fiction, but also what is at stake in the way that science fiction focusing on climate change articulates a novum in relation to history, as well as futurity.

The aim of this study was to emulate the MERINO trial of piperacillin-tazobactam vs meropenem for the definitive treatment of bloodstream infection (BSI) caused by ceftriaxone-nonsusceptible E coli or Klebsiella spp.
Data from an observational study of BSI and a randomised controlled trial of a rapid diagnostic in BSI were used to emulate the MERINO trial. The primary outcome of the emulated trial was 28-day mortality after blood culture. Outcomes were compared using logistic regression adjusted for propensity score for emulated intervention.
Of the 6,371 observational study and RCT participants, 1,968 had a bloodstream infection with E. coli or Klebsiella spp. of which 121 met the eligibility criteria. In the emulated trial, a total of 14/82 patients (17.1%) allocated to piperacillin-tazobactam met the primary outcome compared with 6/39 (15.4%) in the meropenem group (unadjusted odds ratio 1.13 (95% CI 0.40 to 3.21)). After adjustment for propensity score, the odds ratio increased to 1.31 (95% CI 0.40 to 4.26). This difference is in the same direction but of a smaller magnitudethan observed in the MERINO trial, where 30-day mortality was met by 23/187 patients (12.3%) in the piperacillin-tazobactam and 7/191 (3.7%) in the meropenem group (unadjusted odds ratio of 3.69 (95% CI 1.48 to 10.41)).
The mortality rate in an emulated trial population was more than double the mortality rate in the MERINO trial. The methodology used attempts to address the concern that previous results could be explained by biases such as selection bias and uncontrolled confounding and provides information on how a trial such as the MERINO trial may have performed in the NHS.

A scoping review of outdoor food marketing: exposure, power and impacts on eating behaviour and health

Background
There is convincing evidence that unhealthy food marketing is extensive on television and in digital media, uses powerful persuasive techniques, and impacts dietary choices and consumption, particularly in children. It is less clear whether this is also the case for outdoor food marketing. This review (i) identifies common criteria used to define outdoor food marketing, (ii) summarises research methodologies used, (iii) identifies available evidence on the exposure, power (i.e. persuasive creative strategies within marketing) and impact of outdoor food marketing on behaviour and health and (iv) identifies knowledge gaps and directions for future research.
Methods
A systematic search was conducted of Medline (Ovid), Scopus, Science Direct, Proquest, PsycINFO, CINAHL, PubMed, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and a number of grey literature sources. Titles and abstracts were screened by one researcher. Relevant full texts were independently checked by two researchers against eligibility criteria.
Results
Fifty-three studies were conducted across twenty-one countries. The majority of studies (
n
= 39) were conducted in high-income countries. All measured the extent of exposure to outdoor food marketing, twelve also assessed power and three measured impact on behavioural or health outcomes. Criteria used to define outdoor food marketing and methodologies adopted were highly variable across studies. Almost a quarter of advertisements across all studies were for food (mean of 22.1%) and the majority of advertised foods were unhealthy (mean of 63%). The evidence on differences in exposure by SES is heterogenous, which makes it difficult to draw conclusions, however the research suggests that ethnic minority groups have a higher likelihood of exposure to food marketing outdoors. The most frequent persuasive creative strategies were premium offers and use of characters. There was limited evidence on the relationship between exposure to outdoor food marketing and eating behaviour or health outcomes.
Conclusions
This review highlights the extent of unhealthy outdoor food marketing globally and the powerful methods used within this marketing. There is a need for consistency in defining and measuring outdoor food marketing to enable comparison across time and place. Future research should attempt to measure direct impacts on behaviour and health.

Orexin 2 receptor–selective agonist danavorexton improves narcolepsy phenotype in a mouse model and in human patients

Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is a sleep disorder caused by a loss of orexinergic neurons. Narcolepsy type 2 (NT2) is heterogeneous; affected individuals typically have normal orexin levels. Following evaluation in mice, the effects of the orexin 2 receptor (OX2R)-selective agonist danavorexton were evaluated in single- and multiple-rising-dose studies in healthy adults, and in individuals with NT1 and NT2. In orexin/ataxin-3 narcolepsy mice, danavorexton reduced sleep/wakefulness fragmentation and cataplexy-like episodes during the active phase. In humans, danavorexton administered intravenously was well tolerated and was associated with marked improvements in sleep latency in both NT1 and NT2. In individuals with NT1, danavorexton dose-dependently increased sleep latency in the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test, up to the ceiling effect of 40 min, in both the single- and multiple-rising-dose studies. These findings indicate that OX2Rs remain functional despite long-term orexin loss in NT1. OX2R-selective agonists are a promising treatment for both NT1 and NT2.

The Spatiotemporal Evolution of the Diurnal Cycle in Two WRF Simulations of Tropical Cyclones

The properties of diurnal variability in tropical cyclones (TCs) and the mechanisms behind them remain an intriguing aspect of TC research. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of diurnal variability in two simulations of TCs to explore these mechanisms. One simulation is a well-known Hurricane Nature Run (HNR1), which is a realistic simulation of a TC produced using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model. The other simulation is a realistic simulation produced using WRF of Hurricane Florence (2018) using hourly ERA5 data as input. Empirical orthogonal functions and Fourier filtering are used to analyze diurnal variability in the TCs. In both simulations a diurnal squall forms at sunrise in the inner core and propagates radially outward and intensifies until midday. At midday the upper-level outflow strengthens, surface inflow weakens, and the cirrus canopy reaches its maximum height and radial extent. At sunset and overnight, the surface inflow is stronger, and convection inside the RMW peaks. Therefore, two diurnal cycles of convection exist in the TCs with different phases of maxima: eyewall convection at sunset and at night, and rainband convection in the early morning. This study finds that the diurnal pulse in the cirrus canopy is not advectively driven, nor can it be attributed to weaker inertial stability at night; rather, the results indicate direct solar heating as a mechanism for cirrus canopy lifting and enhanced daytime outflow. These results show a strong diurnal modulation of tropical cyclone structure, and are consistent with other recent observational and modeling studies of the TC diurnal cycle.

Balanced and Radiating Wave Responses to Diurnal Heating in Tropical Cyclone–Like Vortices Using a Linear Nonhydrostatic Model

The diurnal cycle (DC) in the cirrus canopy of tropical cyclones (TCs) is a well-documented phenomenon. While early studies linked the DC in the area of the cirrus canopy to a DC in the strength of eyewall convection, later studies considered it a direct response to the DC of radiation in the cirrus canopy. In this study, an idealized linear model is used to examine the extent to which linear dynamics can capture the DC in TCs, in particular the transition between balanced and radiating responses to diurnal heating. The model heat forcing is physically motivated by the diabatic heating output from a realistic simulation, which illustrates the presence of a DC in moist convective heating and radiative heating in the eyewall, and a DC in radiative heating in the cirrus canopy. This study finds that the DCs of heating in the eyewall yield a response that is restricted to inside the RMW by the high inertial stability in the inner core. The DC of radiative heating in the cirrus canopy yields a response throughout the entire cyclone. Lower-frequency responses, of diurnal and semidiurnal frequency, are balanced throughout much of the cyclone. High-frequency waves with periods under 8 h, created at sunrise and sunset, can radiate outward and downward. These results indicate that diurnal responses are balanced in the majority of a TC and originate in the cirrus canopy, instead of the eyewall. The DC in cirrus canopy vertical motion also appears to originate in the cirrus canopy.
