Economic policy
2017
The fall-out from the economic and financial crisis of 2008 had profound implications for countries across the world, leading different states to determine the best approach to mitigating its effects. In The Austerity State , a group of established and emerging scholars tackles the question of why states continue to rely on policies that, on many levels, have failed.
After 2008, austerity policies were implemented in various countries, a fact the contributors link to the persistence of neoliberalism and its accepted wisdoms about crisis management. In the immediate aftermath of the 2008 collapse, governments and central banks appeared to adopt a Keynesian approach to salvaging the global economy. This perception is mistaken, the authors argue. The “austerian” analysis of the crisis is ahistorical and shifts the blame from the under-regulated private sector to public, or sovereign, debt for which public authorities are responsible.
The Austerity State provides a critical examination of the accepted discourse around austerity measures and explores the reasons behind its continued prevalence in the world.

Micali, John
2005
IN SEPTEMBER 2003, John Micali was on the payroll of a contractor hired to remove asbestos from Ground Zero artifacts - the crushed fire trucks, the trashed furniture, the twisted steel. Micali was listed as a $58,000-a-year employee of Specialty Service Contracting, paid by the Port Authority to clean World Trade Center artifacts at JFK's Hangar 17. At Hangar 17, the $3 million artifacts cleanup was overseen by PA engineer Tony Fontanetta, a longtime [Allen Monchik] friend who, authorities charged, regularly accepted Mets tickets, cash and other bribes. Those charged included Fontanetta, [Mark Jakubek] and two other PA workers, along with Specialty and two additional asbestos firms. The cases are pending; Monchik is now cooperating with authorities.

EXPOSED: MAP OF GROUND ZERO SPOILS. WHERE THE MONEY WENT TO CLEAR TRADE CENTER DEBRIS
ON DEC. 5, the Daily News published a story which included a statement that Mazzocchi Wrecking, a Ground Zero cleanup subcontractor, had been linked by authorities to the mob, and that the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, which regulates the casino industry, had charged that three members of the DeCavalcante crime family worked for the company. These charges were made to the New Jersey Casino Control Commission in 2002 in connection with an objection to Mazzocchi's renewal of its casino services license. The commission found after a hearing that [Grace Mazzocchi] did not know of the men's mob ties during their employment and had severed its relationships with all three. It concluded that the firm and its principals had demonstrated the \"good character, honesty and integrity\" required for license renewal. Currently, the Division of Gaming Enforcement has no objections to Mazzocchi's license, and does not contend that the firm has any mob connections. A quote drawn from a group interview that was published Dec. 5 as part of the Daily News \"9/11 Money Trough\" series was misattributed to Lower Manhattan Development Corp. President Stefan Pryor. AMEC hired Big Apple Wrecking, owned by Harold Greenberg, a reputed mob associate whose firm was barred from government work because of his convictions in bid-rigging and bribery conspiracies. Weeks into the cleanup, Thacher Associates realized Greenberg was on- site and kicked Big Apple off the job, though the firm still collected $203,000. Still, sources say, Safeway leased its equipment from Greenberg, rented office space from Greenberg, owed Greenberg a loan. Greenberg also was a Safeway consultant on several jobs.

From Commedia dell'Arte came archetypal characters that are still with us today, such as Harlequin and Pantalone, and the rediscovered craft of writing comic dramas and masked theatre. From it came the forces that helped create and influence Opera, Ballet, Pantomime, Shakespeare, Moliere, Lopes de Vega, Goldoni, Meyerhold, and even the glove puppet, Mr Punch. The Routledge Companion to Commedia dell'Arte is a wide-ranging volume written by over 50 experts, that traces the history, characteristics, and development of this fascinating yet elusive theatre form. In synthesizing the elements of Commedia, this book introduces the history of the Sartori mask studio; presents a comparison between Gozzi and Goldoni’s complicated and adversarial approaches to theatre; invites discussions on Commedia’s relevance to Shakespeare, and illuminates re-interpretations of Commedia in modern times. The authors are drawn from actors, mask-makers, pedagogues, directors, trainers and academics, all of whom add unique insights into this most delightful of theatre styles. Notable contributions include:
