Women Creators: Representations of Space and Place in Women's Writing
Introduction to the dossier \"Women Creators: Representations of Space and Place in Women’s Writing,\" guest edited by Dr. Alinne Balduino P. Fernandes (Modern Languages, Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil), and Dr. Melissa Sihr (Drama Studies, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland), in celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the first issue of Ilha do Desterro exclusively dedicated to women writers. The 1985 issue, Women Writers/Mulheres Escritoras, was edited by Professor Susana Bornéo Funck, one of the pioneers in women studies at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, and the pioneer lecturer in women’s writing UFSC’s Modern Languages department (Departamento de Língua e Literatura Estrangeiras).
“You’re like a vegetarian in leather shoes”: Cognitive Disconnect and Ecogrief in Stacey Gregg’s
In this article, we analyse how Northern Irish playwright Stacey Gregg’s Override (2013) can be read through the lens of the Anthropocene, a term from the geological sciences that has been appropriated by the humanities to question issues of human exceptionalism. Firstly, we examine the ways in which the play, by means of Vi and Mark’s failed attempt to escape technological misuse, challenges the nature/culture dichotomy, which is central to the instrumentalisation of nature for human domination Secondly, we consider how ecogrief comes with the loss of social and humanistic elements that were once grounding and grounded, but are now unstable and murky, such as the idea of what entails a human being. Ultimately, we contend that that derives from the cognitive disconnect resulting from not being able to understand one’s role in the development of an ongoing catastrophe.
\You're like a vegetarian in leather shoes\: Cognitive Disconnect and Ecogrief in Stacey Gregg's Override
In this article, we analyse how Northern Irish playwright Stacey Gregg's Override (2013) can be read through the lens of the Anthropocene, a term from the geological sciences that has been appropriated by the humanities to question issues of human exceptionalism. Firstly, we examine the ways in which the play, by means of Vi and Mark's failed attempt to escape technological misuse, challenges the nature/culture dichotomy, which is central to the instrumentalisation of nature for human domination Secondly, we consider how ecogrief comes with the loss of social and humanistic elements that were once grounding and grounded, but are now unstable and murky, such as the idea of what entails a human being. Ultimately, we contend that that derives from the cognitive disconnect resulting from not being able to understand one's role in the development of an ongoing catastrophe. Key Words. Anthropocene, Nature/Culture dichotomy, Ecogrief, Stacey Gregg, Override. Antropoceno, Dicotomia naturaleza/cultura, Eco-duelo, Stacey Gregg, Override.
(Post-)Modernism and Cyborg Writing in George Egerton’s “The Regeneration of Two” (1894)
Taking into account Rita Felski’s (1995) discussion on stereotypical representations of women in modernity and the New Woman movement, in this paper we analyse George Egerton’s short story “The Regeneration of Two” (1894) from the perspective of Donna Haraway’s cyborg imagery and the concept of cyborg writing. We demonstrate that “The Regeneration of Two” dialogues with Haraway’s proposition of a cyborg writing as it opposes an oppressive patriarchal system with the creation of a women’s community. To do so, we explore two main aspects of cyborg imagery present in the short story: the fractured identities and the community of political kinship, resulting in a subversive “cyborgian epiphany.” This epiphany informs Egerton’s progressive and intersectional representation of gender relations and of women’s writing part and parcel of the late 19th-century radical feminist New Woman movement.
INTRODUCTION HISTORIES, ROLES, AND DYNAMICS IN ARTISTIC COLLABORATIONS: FOREGROUNDING COMMUNITY, EXCHANGE, AND ARTISTIC EXPOSURE
Due to the fact that all three guest-editors work in Irish Studies, the appearance of Yeats, Beckett and also Dermot Healy could be expected given how we circulated the CFP amongst our research clusters, but we were pleasantly surprised by the interest in comics and other forms of popular culture and literature internationally. his emphasis is particularly welcome given Ilka do Desterro's long-standing commitment to Cultural Studies in Brazil. [...]as a special feature in this thematic volume, all three book reviews included analyse recently published volumes also addressing aspects of artistic collaborations. In their study of illegally-printed religious texts in the Reformation period, the authors consider, on the one hand, the need for and the evidence of careful proofing, despite the grave dangers involved, and, on the other, the authority of those involved in the process. hey uncover evidence of collaboration between authors, printers and their assistants in producing the \"ideal\" copy of the treaties. heir involvement in the proceedings is considered integral enough to their creation as to warrant persecution along with the authors in case their illegal activities were discovered and tried in court. Drawing from two case studies, the Canadian production of Secret Path (2016) and the Brazilian Airplane Mode (2017), Figueiredo illuminates the heightened collaborative relationships involved in the creative process, resulting in different products. he complexities resulting from this process for both author/producers and users/consumers are examined throughout the essay. [...]the system they developed \"arrived collaboratively between not only the two living human beings but also by a variety of communicators: controls, guides, 'frustrators' (tricksters or malevolent beings trying to damage the work), personages from other lifetimes, and daimons.\"
