Association between Internet Gaming Disorder or Pathological Video-Game Use and Comorbid Psychopathology: A Comprehensive Review

The addictive use of video games is recognized as a problem with clinical relevance and is included in international diagnostic manuals and classifications of diseases. The association between “Internet addiction” and mental health has been well documented across a range of investigations. However, a major drawback of these studies is that no controls have been placed on the type of Internet use investigated. The aim of this study is to review systematically the current literature in order to explore the association between Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and psychopathology. An electronic literature search was conducted using PubMed, PsychINFO, ScienceDirect, Web of Science and Google Scholar (r.n. CRD42018082398). The effect sizes for the observed correlations were identified or computed. Twenty-four articles met the eligibility criteria. The studies included comprised 21 cross-sectional and three prospective designs. Most of the research was conducted in Europe. The significant correlations reported comprised: 92% between IGD and anxiety, 89% with depression, 85% with symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and 75% with social phobia/anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Most of the studies reported higher rates of IGD in males. The lack of longitudinal studies and the contradictory results obtained prevent detection of the directionality of the associations and, furthermore, show the complex relationship between both phenomena.

Bacterial, protozoan and other microbial infections share an accelerated metabolic rate. In order to ensure a proper functioning of cell replication and proteins and nucleic acids synthesis processes, folate metabolism rate is also increased in these cases. For this reason, folic acid antagonists have been used since their discovery to treat different kinds of microbial infections, taking advantage of this metabolic difference when compared with human cells. However, resistances to these compounds have emerged since then and only combined therapies are currently used in clinic. In addition, some of these compounds have been found to have an immunomodulatory behavior that allows clinicians using them as anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive drugs. Therefore, the aim of this review is to provide an updated state-of-the-art on the use of antifolates as antibacterial and immunomodulating agents in the clinical setting, as well as to present their action mechanisms and currently investigated biomedical applications.

Mental Health Symptoms Associated with Sexualized Drug Use (Chemsex) among Men Who Have Sex with Men: A Systematic Review

Background: Sexualized drug use (SDU), also known as chemsex, refers to the use of psychoactive substances for sexual purposes among men who have sex with men (MSM), which has been associated with mental health symptoms. The objective of this review is to systematically review the available evidence on mental health outcomes in MSM who use sexualized drugs. Methods: To prepare this systematic review, search strategies were developed and applied to the Web of Science, Science Direct, PubMed, and Scopus databases. A total of 117 articles were found, of which 12 were selected for the final review. Results: Those MSM who practiced SDU were more likely to experience from depression, anxiety, or a substance dependence, although these results were not found in all the studies analyzed. Among those who practiced the administration of intravenous drugs (referred to as slamsex), the mental health symptoms were more severe. Conclusions: This systematic review contributes to a fuller understanding of the mental health symptoms present in MSM who consume drugs for sexual purposes. Greater uniformity in data collection instruments is required, as well as the need to conduct a more in-depth assessment of the psychosocial adjustment of people who practice chemsex.

Principles of Nutrient and Water Management for Indoor Agriculture

Mass balance principles are a cornerstone of efficient fertilizer use and can be utilized to optimize plant nutrition without discarding or leaching solution. Here, we describe the maintenance of closed hydroponic and soilless substrate systems based on mass balance. Water removed by transpiration is restored with solution that replaces the nutrients that were taken up with the water. The concentration of nutrients in this refill/irrigation solution is determined by multiplying the optimal concentration of each nutrient in plant tissue by the water-use efficiency (WUE; ratio of dry mass to water transpired). Optimal leaf nutrient concentrations are well established, but WUE in controlled environments varies widely and is less well characterized. Elevated CO2 increases photosynthesis and demand for nutrients, but partially closes stomata and reduces transpiration; so high CO2 dramatically increases WUE. The concentration of the refill/irrigation solution must be adjusted to account for a two-fold range of WUE, from 3 g L−1 in ambient CO2 in lower humidity, to 6 g L−1 in elevated CO2 in higher humidity. WUE and nutrient requirements vary during the vegetative and reproductive stages of growth, and adjustment of the solution over the lifecycle can be beneficial. Measurement of solution electrical conductivity (EC) is helpful, but if the solution is appropriate, low EC usually means healthy plants and active nutrient uptake. The ammonium to nitrate ratio is critical to pH management. We have applied these principles across multiple species and environments to achieve long-term, steady-state nutrient concentrations with no discharge or leaching of solution.

We perform a numerical simulation of the evolution of inhomogeneities with transverse profile in a collision of gravitational shockwaves in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. This constitutes a step closer towards an accurate holographic description of the thermalization of a strongly coupled plasma, which can model the dynamics of heavy ion collisions. The results indicate that the considered inhomogeneities typically become hydrodynamical earlier or at the same moment when hydrodynamics applies to the background, even though they decay slowly.

TNFSF14: LIGHTing the Way for Effective Cancer Immunotherapy

Tumor necrosis factor superfamily member 14 (LIGHT) has been in pre-clinical development for over a decade and shows promise as a modality of enhancing treatment approaches in the field of cancer immunotherapy. To date, LIGHT has been used to combat cancer in multiple tumor models where it can be combined with other immunotherapy modalities to clear established solid tumors as well as treat metastatic events. When LIGHT molecules are delivered to or expressed within tumors they cause significant changes in the tumor microenvironment that are primarily driven through vascular normalization and generation of tertiary lymphoid structures. These changes can synergize with methods that induce or support anti-tumor immune responses, such as checkpoint inhibitors and/or tumor vaccines, to greatly improve immunotherapeutic strategies against cancer. While investigators have utilized multiple vectors to LIGHT-up tumor tissues, there are still improvements needed and components to be found within a human tumor microenvironment that may impede translational efforts. This review addresses the current state of this field.

NuRadioReco: a reconstruction framework for radio neutrino detectors

While the radio detection of cosmic rays has advanced to a standard method in astroparticle physics, the radio detection of neutrinos is just about to start its full bloom. The successes of pilot-arrays have to be accompanied by the development of modern and flexible software tools to ensure rapid progress in reconstruction algorithms and data processing. We present NuRadioReco as such a modern Python-based data analysis tool. It includes a suitable data-structure, a database-implementation of a time-dependent detector, modern browser-based data visualization tools, and fully separated analysis modules. We describe the framework and examples, as well as new reconstruction algorithms to obtain the full three-dimensional electric field from distributed antennas which is needed for high-precision energy reconstruction of particle showers.

In this paper, a survey is presented on the use of optimization models for the integration of electric vehicles (EVs) and charging stations (CSs) in the energy system, paying particular attention both to planning problems (i.e., those problems related to long term decisions such as the siting and sizing of CSs), and operational management problems (i.e., the optimal scheduling of EVs in smart grids, microgrids and buildings taking into account vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities). Moreover, specific attention was dedicated to decision problems that couple transportation and electrical networks, such as the energy demand assessment for a vehicle over a path and routing and charging decision problems for goods and people transportation. Finally, an effort was dedicated to highlighting the integration and the use of EVs in very recent regulation frameworks, with specific reference to the participation in the balancing market through the figure of an aggregator and the inclusion in the management of Energy Communities (ECs) and sustainable districts.

The distribution of different intensity demanding scenarios in elite rink hockey players using an electronic performance tracking system

Despite the traditional use of average values for determining physical demands, the intermittent and fluctuating nature of team sports may lead to underestimation of the most demanding scenarios. All the most demanding scenario-related investigations to date only report one maximal scenario per game, the greatest. However, the latest research on this subject has shown additional scenarios of equal or similar magnitude that most researchers have not considered. This repetition concept started a new way of describing competition and training loads; then the study aims were: first, to quantify and assess differences between playing positions in terms of the most demanding scenarios in official matches; and second, to quantify and assess the differences between playing positions in the repetition of different intensity scenarios relative to the most demanding individual scenario. We monitored nine professional rink hockey players (7 exterior and 2 interior players) in 18 competitive matches using an electronic performance tracking system. The interior players are closest to the opponent’s goal, while the exterior players are farthest from it. Peak physical demands variables included total distance (m), distance covered at >18 km·h -1 (m), the number of accelerations (≥2 m∙s -2 , count) and decelerations (≤-2 m∙s -2 , count) in 30 s. An average from the top three individual most demanding scenarios was used to define a reference value to quantify the distribution scenario repetition during matches. The results showed that peak demands in rink hockey are position-dependent, with more distance covered by exterior players and more accelerations performed by interior players. In addition, rink hockey matches include multiple scenario exposures that are close to the peak physical demands of a match. Using the results of this study, coaches can prepare tailored training plans for each position, focusing on distances covered or accelerations for exterior players.
