Effects of virtual reality high heights exposure during beam-walking on physiological stress and cognitive loading

Virtual reality has been increasingly used in research on balance rehabilitation because it provides robust and novel sensory experiences in controlled environments. We studied 19 healthy young subjects performing a balance beam walking task in two virtual reality conditions and with unaltered view (15 minutes each) to determine if virtual reality high heights exposure induced stress. We recorded number of steps off the beam, heart rate, electrodermal activity, response time to an auditory cue, and high-density electroencephalography (EEG). We hypothesized that virtual high heights exposure would increase measures of physiological stress compared to unaltered viewing at low heights. We found that the virtual high height condition increased heart rate variability and heart rate frequency power relative to virtual low heights. Virtual reality use resulted in increased number of step-offs, heart rate, electrodermal activity, and response time compared to the unaltered viewing at low heights condition. Our results indicated that virtual reality decreased dynamic balance performance and increased physical and cognitive loading compared to unaltered viewing at low heights. In virtual reality, we found significant decreases in source-localized EEG peak amplitude relative to unaltered viewing in the anterior cingulate, which is considered important in sensing loss of balance. Our findings indicate that virtual reality provides realistic experiences that can induce physiological stress in humans during dynamic balance tasks, but virtual reality use impairs physical and cognitive performance during balance.

Human muscle activity and lower limb biomechanics of overground walking at varying levels of simulated reduced gravity and gait speeds

Reducing the mechanical load on the human body through simulated reduced gravity can reveal important insight into locomotion biomechanics. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of simulated reduced gravity on muscle activation levels and lower limb biomechanics across a range of overground walking speeds. Our overall hypothesis was that muscle activation amplitudes would not decrease proportionally to gravity level. We recruited 12 participants (6 female, 6 male) to walk overground at 1.0, 0.76, 0.55, and 0.31 G for four speeds: 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, and 1.6 ms -1 . We found that peak ground reaction forces, peak knee extension moment in early stance, peak hip flexion moment, and peak ankle extension moment all decreased substantially with reduced gravity. The peak knee extension moment at late stance/early swing did not change with gravity. The effect of gravity on muscle activity amplitude varied considerably with muscle and speed, often varying nonlinearly with gravity level. Quadriceps (rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, & vastus medialis) and medial gastrocnemius activity decreased in stance phase with reduced gravity. Soleus and lateral gastrocnemius activity had no statistical differences with gravity level. Tibialis anterior and biceps femoris increased with simulated reduced gravity in swing and stance phase, respectively. The uncoupled relationship between simulated gravity level and muscle activity have important implications for understanding biomechanical muscle functions during human walking and for the use of bodyweight support for gait rehabilitation after injury.

Effects of simulated reduced gravity and walking speed on ankle, knee, and hip quasi-stiffness in overground walking

Quasi-stiffness characterizes the dynamics of a joint in specific sections of stance-phase and is used in the design of wearable devices to assist walking. We sought to investigate the effect of simulated reduced gravity and walking speed on quasi-stiffness of the hip, knee, and ankle in overground walking. 12 participants walked at 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, and 1.6 m/s in 1, 0.76, 0.54, and 0.31 gravity. We defined 11 delimiting points in stance phase (4 each for the ankle and hip, 3 for the knee) and calculated the quasi-stiffness for 4 phases for both the hip and ankle, and 2 phases for the knee. The R 2 value quantified the suitability of the quasi-stiffness models. We found gravity level had a significant effect on 6 phases of quasi-stiffness, while speed significantly affected the quasi-stiffness in 5 phases. We concluded that the intrinsic muscle-tendon unit stiffness was the biggest determinant of quasi-stiffness. Speed had a significant effect on the R 2 of all phases of quasi-stiffness. Slow walking (0.4 m/s) was the least accurately modelled walking speed. Our findings showed adaptions in gait strategy when relative power and strength of the joints were increased in low gravity, which has implications for prosthesis and exoskeleton design.

Gait variability of outdoor vs treadmill walking with bilateral robotic ankle exoskeletons under proportional myoelectric control

Lower limb robotic exoskeletons are often studied in the context of steady-state treadmill walking in laboratory environments. However, the end goal of these devices is often adoption into our everyday lives. To move outside of the laboratory, there is a need to study exoskeletons in real world, complex environments. One way to study the human-machine interaction is to look at how the exoskeleton affects the user’s gait. In this study we assessed changes in gait spatiotemporal variability when using a robotic ankle exoskeleton under proportional myoelectric control both inside on a treadmill and outside overground. We hypothesized that walking with the exoskeletons would not lead to significant changes in variability inside on a treadmill or outside compared to not using the exoskeletons. In addition, we hypothesized that walking outside would lead to higher variability both with and without the exoskeletons compared to treadmill walking. In support of our hypothesis, we found significantly higher coefficients of variation of stride length, stance time, and swing time when walking outside both with and without the exoskeleton. We found a significantly higher variability when using the exoskeletons inside on the treadmill, but we did not see significantly higher variability when walking outside overground. The value of this study to the literature is that it emphasizes the importance of studying exoskeletons in the environment in which they are meant to be used. By looking at only indoor gait spatiotemporal measures, we may have assumed that the exoskeletons led to higher variability which may be unsafe for certain target populations. In the context of the literature, we show that variability due to robotic ankle exoskeletons under proportional myoelectric control does not elicit different changes in stride time variability than previously found in other daily living tasks (uneven terrain, load carriage, or cognitive tasks).

Pupil Sizes Scale with Attentional Load and Task Experience in a Multiple Object Tracking Task

Previous studies have related changes in attentional load to pupil size modulations. However, studies relating changes in attentional load and task experience on a finer scale to pupil size modulations are scarce. Here, we investigated how these changes affect pupil sizes. To manipulate attentional load, participants covertly tracked between zero and five objects among several randomly moving objects on a computer screen. To investigate effects of task experience, the experiment was conducted on three consecutive days. We found that pupil sizes increased with each increment in attentional load. Across days, we found systematic pupil size reductions. We compared the model fit for predicting pupil size modulations using attentional load, task experience, and task performance as predictors. We found that a model which included attentional load and task experience as predictors had the best model fit while adding performance as a predictor to this model reduced the overall model fit. Overall, results suggest that pupillometry provides a viable metric for precisely assessing attentional load and task experience in visuospatial tasks.

Group-level cortical and muscular connectivity during perturbations to walking and standing balance

Maintaining balance is a complex process requiring multisensory processing and coordinated muscle activation. Previous studies have indicated that the cortex is directly involved in balance control, but less information is known about cortical flow of signals for balance. We studied source-localized electrocortical effective connectivity dynamics of healthy young subjects (29 subjects: 14 male and 15 female) walking and standing with both visual and physical perturbations to their balance. The goal of this study was to quantify differences in group-level corticomuscular connectivity responses to sensorimotor perturbations during walking and standing. We hypothesized that perturbed visual input during balance would transiently decrease connectivity between occipital and parietal areas due to disruptive visual input during sensory processing. We also hypothesized that physical pull perturbations would increase cortical connections to central sensorimotor areas because of higher sensorimotor integration demands. Our findings show decreased occipito-parietal connectivity during visual rotations and widespread increases in connectivity during pull perturbations focused on central areas, as expected. We also found evidence for communication from cortex to muscles during perturbed balance. These results show that sensorimotor perturbations to balance alter cortical networks and can be quantified using effective connectivity estimation.

Electrocortical activity is coupled to gait cycle phase during treadmill walking

Recent findings suggest that human cortex is more active during steady-speed unperturbed locomotion than previously thought. However, techniques that have been used to image the brain during locomotion lack the temporal resolution necessary to assess intra-stride cortical dynamics. Our aim was to determine if electrocortical activity is coupled to gait cycle phase during steady-speed human walking. We used electroencephalography (EEG), motion capture, and a force-measuring treadmill to record brain and body dynamics while eight healthy young adult subjects walked on a treadmill. Infomax independent component analysis (ICA) parsed EEG signals into maximally independent component (IC) processes representing electrocortical sources, muscle sources, and artifacts. We calculated a spatially fixed equivalent current dipole for each IC using an inverse modeling approach, and clustered electrocortical sources across subjects by similarities in dipole locations and power spectra. We then computed spectrograms for each electrocortical source that were time-locked to the gait cycle. Electrocortical sources in the anterior cingulate, posterior parietal, and sensorimotor cortex exhibited significant (p<0.05) intra-stride changes in spectral power. During the end of stance, as the leading foot was contacting the ground and the trailing foot was pushing off, alpha- and beta-band spectral power increased in or near the left/right sensorimotor and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex. Power increases in the left/right sensorimotor cortex were more pronounced for contralateral limb push-off (ipsilateral heel-strike) than for ipsilateral limb push-off (contralateral heel-strike). Intra-stride high-gamma spectral power changes were evident in anterior cingulate, posterior parietal, and sensorimotor cortex. These data confirm cortical involvement in steady-speed human locomotion. Future applications of these techniques could provide critical insight into the neural mechanisms of movement disorders and gait rehabilitation.

iCanClean Removes Motion, Muscle, Eye, and Line-Noise Artifacts from Phantom EEG

The goal of this study was to test a novel approach (iCanClean) to remove non-brain sources from scalp EEG data recorded in mobile conditions. We created an electrically conductive phantom head with 10 brain sources, 10 contaminating sources, scalp, and hair. We tested the ability of iCanClean to remove artifacts while preserving brain activity under six conditions: Brain, Brain + Eyes, Brain + Neck Muscles, Brain + Facial Muscles, Brain + Walking Motion, and Brain + All Artifacts. We compared iCanClean to three other methods: Artifact Subspace Reconstruction (ASR), Auto-CCA, and Adaptive Filtering. Before and after cleaning, we calculated a Data Quality Score (0–100%), based on the average correlation between brain sources and EEG channels. iCanClean consistently outperformed the other three methods, regardless of the type or number of artifacts present. The most striking result was for the condition with all artifacts simultaneously present. Starting from a Data Quality Score of 15.7% (before cleaning), the Brain + All Artifacts condition improved to 55.9% after iCanClean. Meanwhile, it only improved to 27.6%, 27.2%, and 32.9% after ASR, Auto-CCA, and Adaptive Filtering. For context, the Brain condition scored 57.2% without cleaning (reasonable target). We conclude that iCanClean offers the ability to clear multiple artifact sources in real time and could facilitate human mobile brain-imaging studies with EEG.

Individual differences in cooperative and competitive play strategies

Cooperation and competition are common in social interactions. It is not clear how individual differences in personality may predict performance strategies under these two contexts. We evaluated whether instructions to play cooperatively and competitively would differentially affect dyads playing a Pong video game. We hypothesized that instructions to play cooperatively would result in lower overall points scored and differences in paddle control kinematics relative to when participants were instructed to play competitively. We also predicted that higher scores in prosociality and Sportspersonship would be related to better performance during cooperative than competitive conditions. Pairs of participants played a Pong video game under cooperative and competitive instructions. During competitive trials, participants were instructed to score more points against one another to win the game. During the cooperative trials, participants were instructed to work together to score as few points against one another as possible. After game play, each participant completed surveys so we could measure their trait prosociality and Sportspersonship. Condition was a significant predictor of where along the paddle participants hit the ball, which controlled ball exit angles. Specifically, during cooperation participants concentrated ball contacts on the paddle towards the center to produce more consistent rebound angles. We found a significant correlation of Sex and the average points scored by participants during cooperative games, competitive games, and across all trials. Sex was also significantly correlated with paddle kinematics during cooperative games. The overall scores on the prosociality and Sportspersonship surveys were not significantly correlated with the performance outcomes in cooperative and competitive games. The dimension of prosociality assessing empathic concern was significantly correlated with performance outcomes during cooperative video game play. No Sportspersonship survey score was able to predict cooperative or competitive game performance, suggesting that Sportspersonship personality assessments are not reliable predictors of cooperative or competitive behaviors translated to a virtual game setting. Survey items and dimensions probing broader empathic concern may be more effective predictors of cooperative and competitive performance during interactive video game play. Further testing is encouraged to assess the efficacy of prosocial personality traits as predictors of cooperative and competitive video game behavior.

iCanClean Improves Independent Component Analysis of Mobile Brain Imaging with EEG

Motion artifacts hinder source-level analysis of mobile electroencephalography (EEG) data using independent component analysis (ICA). iCanClean is a novel cleaning algorithm that uses reference noise recordings to remove noisy EEG subspaces, but it has not been formally tested in a parameter sweep. The goal of this study was to test iCanClean’s ability to improve the ICA decomposition of EEG data corrupted by walking motion artifacts. Our primary objective was to determine optimal settings and performance in a parameter sweep (varying the window length and r2 cleaning aggressiveness). High-density EEG was recorded with 120 + 120 (dual-layer) EEG electrodes in young adults, high-functioning older adults, and low-functioning older adults. EEG data were decomposed by ICA after basic preprocessing and iCanClean. Components well-localized as dipoles (residual variance < 15%) and with high brain probability (ICLabel > 50%) were marked as ‘good’. We determined iCanClean’s optimal window length and cleaning aggressiveness to be 4-s and r2 = 0.65 for our data. At these settings, iCanClean improved the average number of good components from 8.4 to 13.2 (+57%). Good performance could be maintained with reduced sets of noise channels (12.7, 12.2, and 12.0 good components for 64, 32, and 16 noise channels, respectively). Overall, iCanClean shows promise as an effective method to clean mobile EEG data.
