ANOTHER VOICE: POTHOLE ECONOMICS: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR
Perhaps you've noticed the deteriorating state of Virginia's roadways. It's hard to miss. Driving on many of the state's arteries has become a bone-rattling exercise in dodging potholes. Local streets are cracked and cratered. The paint that should safely delineate lanes and road margins has virtually disappeared from many roads. Even Richmond's iconic boulevard, Monument Avenue, is scarred. Fixing potholes is what we have governments for. That, and lots of other things, like rescuing people from hurricanes, putting out fires, catching criminals, installing streetlights, educating children, making sure our food and medicines are safe, judging disputes, and a thousand other essential tasks we rely on but can't do ourselves. If we want our roads fixed, we'll have to pay for it.
