He quotes Rav Joseph Soloveichik's opposition to a woman who wished to wear a tallit for prayers, years ago (who knows what he would say today? As a truly great open thinker, he was always changing his mind), though the Rav, head of the religious Zionist movement, strongly opposed the haredi world's ways - such as supporting themselves from God's Torah and religious compulsion. In any event, the Rav, a dyed-in-the-wool Lithuanian Mitnagid, did indeed oppose emotional religious motivation of any kind, including song and dance.

Unbalanced Bible criticism

Sir, - In \"A biblical epic\" (Time Out, February 26) Calev Ben- David reviews a TV show, Who Wrote the Bible, and recalls his \"dishonorable mention\" in our Torah Outreach Program Parshat Hashavua study a few years ago for his own article with the same name in The Jerusalem Report. But we did not criticize him for citing the traditionally heretical Documentary Hypothesis, which originated in Germany over a hundred years ago and which, in my view, was an irrational attempt to destroy the most significant Jewish contribution to mankind, the Torah, a few generations before Germany attempted the physical destruction of the Jews.

[Tziporah Heller] doesn't question or dispute any traditional views; she seems to take midrashim as literal, factual and authoritative rather than reflecting one of many possible outlooks and imaginative metaphoric constructs (e.g. On and Korah's wives, p. 36, and the angel teaching the fetus Tora, p. 48; see The Aggadic Midrash Literature by Hananel Mack and Avraham Ben Maimon's Introduction to the Aggada for other equally traditional approaches). A more open and scholarly - although less inspiring and soul-searching - approach to Eshet Hayil is found in \"Midrashei Eshet Hayil,\" Yael Levine Katz's Ph.D thesis, the first submitted by a female to the Talmud Department of Bar-Ilan University. Heller's point of view may be too open, modern and feminist for most Israeli haredim. Yet she may be too haredi for many modern Orthodox because she ignores modern psychological interpretations of the verses, e.g. the \"fun girl\" vs. \"the frum (pious) girl.\" The industrious woman of valor is never described as romantic, sexually appealing or even cheerful; In fact, verse 31:30 indeed concludes \"charm is false and beauty fleeting - a woman with God-awareness will be praised.\" So she glosses over rabbinic explanations of the background of the verses condemning [Solomon], and possible consequent psychoanalytic insights into his personality as well as those of David and Bathsheba. Ch. 31 begins: 1. \"The words (or matters) of Lemuel, King of Masa, whose mother disciplined him. 2. What's this, my son! And what's this, son of my womb! And what's this, son of my vows! 3. Don't give your strength to women, nor your ways to what wipes out kings. 4. It's not for kings, Lemuel, not for kings to drink wine, nor is strong drink for rulers.\"
