Locally adapted goats efficiently gain and lose heat in an equatorial semi-arid environment
The aim of this study was to gain insights in respect to how locally adapted goats exhibit dynamic body heat in an equatorial semi-arid environment. Ten Canindé goats were used in the study (22.90 ± 2.70 kg). Respiratory rate (RR; min breaths−1), rectal temperature (RT; °C) and sweating rate (SR; g m−2 h−1) were measured for 8 days, once a week, for 8 consecutive weeks in each animal, with collection intervals of 1 h throughout the day (24 h), together with the meteorological variables. Air temperature (AT, °C) and relative humidity (RH, %) were measured, and then, the temperature humidity index (THI) was calculated. First, we determined 2 days with stressful climatic conditions and similar environmental characteristics (day 1 and 2) among the 8 experimental days. The RT was evaluated on these 2 days using the means of each hour as the cut-off point, and determining whether the animals are efficient (EF) or inefficient (INEF) in heat loss (β1) and gain (β2). The RT was separated in β1 and β2 for 24 h, setting times to obtain the angular coefficients (β) for both. The days with stressful climatic conditions and similar environmental characteristics were day 1 and 2. The hours in which the Canindé goats gained and lost heat were respectively 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 10 a.m. The animals classified as EF lost more or equal the amount of heat represented for RT. When the mean of all animals was evaluated for efficiency in heat control, the flock was classified as EF. Differences (P < 0.05) were observed for RR and SR between periods. The efficiency in dynamic body heat of the locally adapted goats in this study was determined and showed that the flock as a whole possesses an excellent heat dynamic in an equatorial semi-arid environment.
Design and Prototyping of a Robotic Structure for Poultry Farming
The identification and prediction of losses, along with environmental and behavioral analyses and animal welfare monitoring, are key drivers for the use of technologies in poultry farming which help characterize the productive environment. Among these technologies, robotics emerges as a facilitator as it provides space for the use of several computing tools for capture, analysis and prediction. This study presents the full methodology for building a robot (so called RobôFrango) to its application in poultry farming. The construction method was based on evolutionary prototyping that allowed knowing and testing each physical component (electronic and mechanical) for assembling the robotic structure. This approach made it possible to identify the most suitable components for the broiler production system. The results presented motors, wheels, chassis, batteries and sensors that proved to be the most adaptable to the adversities existing in poultry farms. Validation of the final constructed structure was carried out through practical execution of the robot, seeking to understand how each component behaved in a commercial broiler aviary. It was concluded that it was possible to identify the best electronic and physical equipment for building a robotic prototype to work in poultry farms, and that a final product was generated.
Efficiency and Reliability of Broiler Weighing Methods in Commercial Environments: A Comparative Evaluation
Measuring the weight of broilers is one of the most important yet labor-intensive metrics to monitor throughout a flock’s development. This study aimed to comparatively assess two broiler weighing systems in a commercial production system: an automatic weighing system using a suspended platform, and a manual weighing system. Six flocks, comprising 25,000 birds each, were monitored weekly, and the weight results obtained by manual and automatic methods were compared. Up to the third week of this study, the birds were restricted to the central region of the shed, where the broiler coop was located. From the fourth week onwards, the birds were distributed into four sectors within the shed, divided by fences. Differences in weight were found between the regions of the sheds for the automatic weighing, which demonstrates that the use of an automatic scale for each division is necessary. For the manual weighing, the differences were only found in the last week of rearing, suggesting that throughout the cycle, the weighings could be performed in a single quadrant, representing the shed. Regarding the weighing method, there were statistical differences between manual and automatic weighing. The average values for automatic weighing were 1% lower than the average values for manual weighing. However, from a commercial point of view, this small difference between the methods does not impact the poultry industry. The rational use of automatic scales is recommended to optimize the monitoring of broiler chicken performance, reduce excessive handling and, consequently, minimize animal stress, promoting greater well-being.
A Multidisciplinary View on Animal Welfare and Alternative Protein: Convergences and Perspectives from Professionals in Agricultural, Food, and Veterinary Sciences
This study investigated the perceptions of animal welfare and the consumption of alternative protein sources among future professionals in agronomy, food science, and veterinary medicine. A sample of 769 participants from three faculties [ESALQ (“Luiz de Queiroz” College of Agriculture), FZEA (School of Animal Science and Food Engineering), and FMVZ (School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science)] of the University of São Paulo was used. These faculties have different teaching focuses: agronomy, food and animal production, and veterinary, respectively. A relationship between the perception of animal welfare and alternative sources of protein based on the participants’ educational background was verified, specifically: (i) participants from the FZEA (food science) and FMVZ (veterinary) units would be interested in consuming farmed meat and expressed interest in trying it; (ii) students from the ESALQ (agronomy) have a low level of knowledge about animal welfare and are not very interested in knowing how animals are reared, and few participants attribute the presence of the health inspection seal as influencing their purchasing intention; (iii) participants, regardless of their academic background, did not express an intention to reduce their red meat consumption; (iv) the ESALQ was the campus which showed the most skepticism about animal sentience; (v) most participants from the FMVZ and FZEA reported being willing to pay 4–5% more for products that guarantee animal welfare. The findings suggest that the academic context influences individuals’ perceptions and food choices, highlighting the need for educational strategies that foster a greater awareness of animal welfare, encourage the adoption of more sustainable practices, and promote the acceptance of alternative protein sources within the agri-food sector.
Sheep meat production in the Brazilian semi-arid region: crossing between indigenous breeds
Abstract Investigations in the Brazilian semi-arid region evaluating the performance and carcass traits of sheep of indigenous breeds and their crossings have been performed; however, these studies use exotic breeds which produce precocious lambs with heavier carcasses, but not adapted to climatic conditions and the extensive production system, jeopardizing the sustainability of the sheep production system. We crossed between three indigenous breeds: Morada Nova (MN — maternal breed); Rabo Largo (RL — paternal breed), and Santa Inês (SI — paternal breed) with the objective of evaluating the effect of genotype and sex on the performance and carcass traits of purebred and crossbred animals. A total of 30 lambs, males and females, reared in a semi-intensive system were evaluated. Birth and weaning weights were 2.26 ± 0.53 and 7.31 ± 1.85, respectively. All lambs were slaughtered at 10 months of age. A completely randomized design in a 3 × 2 factorial scheme (three genotypes and two sexes) was used. Multivariate techniques were also performed to reduce group and discriminate variables. Birth and weaning weight were similar (P > 0.05) among genetic groups and sexes. The weight gain, carcass and morphometric trait characteristics, and the main commercial cuts were higher in crossbred lambs (P < 0.05). All indicators have discriminatory power between genotypes and sexes, but the carcass traits have a higher discriminatory power (P < 0.001). All genotypes, regardless of sex, have particular characteristics, i.e. MN × SI was characterized by greater forelimb and ham perimeters (P < 0.001), and the MN × RL by higher hot carcass weight and finish (P = 0.001). The cluster analysis and the heatmap plot revealed associations between SI and the size of cuts and RL with the cut commercial yield and the reduction in weight loss due to cooling. Our findings confirm the hypothesis that crossing between indigenous breeds represents an adequate alternative in sheep meat production systems in semi-arid regions. Finally, we encourage the use of indigenous breeds for sheep meat production with breed identity in order to favor the conservation of genetic resources and the sustainability of the production system.
Perches used as environmental enrichment influence fast-growth broilers’ biomechanics and locomotor morphometry at the age of 42 days
Currently available conventional breeding methods for broilers often result in impaired biomechanics and skeletal growth for the animals. The addition of environmental enrichment is an alternative which can help alleviate these effects. This study examines the effects of environmental enrichment on biomechanics, morphometry, and bone mass of broilers across various age groups. In total, 112 Cobb 500 chicks (50% male and 50% female) were used in a completely randomized design experiment, with 56 broilers per treatment (T1 and T2), carried out in subdivided plots. Each plot was subjected to a different treatment, as follows: all plots were subjected to the treatments (T1 = environmental enrichment and T2 = no environment enrichment) and the sub-plots held the broilers’ age groups (1, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 days old). Eight broilers were euthanized on a weekly basis for two production cycles in order to perform morphometric (diameter and length) and biomechanical analysis of the response variables. These measurements were performed on the femur and tibia. Birds were subjected to classical linear fixed effects model and compared through Tukey’s mean test. Significant interactions between environmental enrichment and broiler age were noticed, particularly at 42 days, which displayed bone development for all variables under study. Except for the length of the femur of broiler chickens (p = 0.4638). Therefore, simple effects will not be evaluated. Environmental enrichment had a notable impact on tibia length (p = 0.0035), femur weight (p = 0.0014), and tibia weight (p<0.0001) at 42 days, indicating a favorable effect on skeletal growth in broilers. Enrichment resulted in a 1% increase in femur inertia, a 2% rise in tibia inertia, and a 1% enhancement in ultimate bending stress for both bones, displaying improved structural integrity and durability. Beneficial changes in bone morphology and biomechanics were observed at 42 days after enrichment.
Aspergillus fumigatus Extracellular Vesicles Display Increased Galleria mellonella Survival but Partial Pro-Inflammatory Response by Macrophages
Fungal extracellular vesicles (EVs) mediate intra- and interspecies communication and are critical in host–fungus interaction, modulating inflammation and immune responses. In this study, we evaluated the in vitro pro- and anti-inflammatory properties of Aspergillus fumigatus EVs over innate leukocytes. A. fumigatus EVs induced a partial proinflammatory response by macrophages, characterized by increased tumor necrosis factor-alpha production, and increased gene expression of induced nitric oxide synthase and adhesion molecules. EVs induce neither NETosis in human neutrophils nor cytokine secretion by peripheral mononuclear cells. However, prior inoculation of A. fumigatus EVs in Galleria mellonella larvae resulted in increased survival after the fungal challenge. Taken together, these findings show that A. fumigatus EVs play a role in protection against fungal infection, although they induce a partial pro-inflammatory response.
Characterization, typification and holistic consumer perception of welfare in laying poultry in Brazil: a machine learning approach
The intensification of production systems raises concerns about animal welfare. In egg production, the use of cages is the main reason for discussion. The current transition from the production system to cage-free systems raises questions about consumer perception. The objective of this study was to typify, characterize and differentiate the profile of Brazilian consumers regarding animal welfare in laying poultry. For this, a questionnaire with 28 questions, addressing questions about sociodemographic indicators (SOC), eating habits (HAB), knowledge about the production chain (CON), general perception of animal welfare in egg production (HPW) and about eggs with an animal welfare guarantee (PEAWG) was answered by 1415 consumers. Machine learning techniques were applied to characterize; typify and holistic perception. Three groups of consumers were defined: interested, emerging and indifferent. All indicators under study showed discriminatory power ( P < 0.001). The indicators that showed the greatest importance for the classification of the three profiles were HPW < EHAB < COM < PEAWG < SOC. The results indicate the potential of interested and emerging groups to become consumers of cage-free eggs and also indicate the need to inform the population about animal welfare in egg production. The results reinforce the need to create specific public policies for the production chain, in order to value egg production and reaffirm interest in the area, especially in specific niches such as production in cage-free systems.
Understanding the dairy production systems in rural settlements in the Brazilian semi-arid region: characterization, typology, and holistic perception
The objective of this study was to characterize and typify dairy farms and to evaluate society’s perception of dairy production in rural settlements in the Brazilian semi-arid region. A questionnaire containing questions related to socioeconomic, livestock, physical, herd management, and production indicators was applied to 17 milk farmers for typological analysis. A second questionnaire was subsequently applied to the same 17 farmers for the holistic perception of dairy farming in rural settlements, in addition to 47 technicians in the area of animal science and 140 laypeople. Milk samples were collected in the settlement’s community cooling tank, while the water used for milking management was collected in the milking parlor at the 17 farms. Multivariate analysis techniques and thematic analysis were performed. Three dairy production systems were identified: low production group (0–25 L), medium production group (25–50 L), and high production group (50–100 L). The physicochemical properties (composition, density, and cryoscopy) of milk attended the Brazilian regulation values. The microbiological parameters of milk and water used for milking are at odds with regulations. Regarding the typology, the indicators, livestock, and productivity showed discriminatory power (P < 0.05) between the productive systems. The responses from the segments of society showed different views on dairy production in rural settlements. It is concluded that the dairy farmers have low education and the cleaning product and water used in milking are out of regulation. The livestock and production indicators typified mainly dairy farms, while the holistic perception showed a lack of efficiency in rural extension, ignorance of the potential of the productive system. Finally, the creation of public policies focusing on the development of the milk production system in settlements is recommended.
Fungal Extracellular Vesicles as Potential Targets for Immune Interventions
The release of extracellular vesicles (EVs) by fungi is a fundamental cellular process. EVs carry several biomolecules, including pigments, proteins, enzymes, lipids, nucleic acids, and carbohydrates, and are involved in physiological and pathological processes. EVs may play a pivotal role in the establishment of fungal infections, as they can interact with the host immune system to elicit multiple outcomes. The release of extracellular vesicles (EVs) by fungi is a fundamental cellular process. EVs carry several biomolecules, including pigments, proteins, enzymes, lipids, nucleic acids, and carbohydrates, and are involved in physiological and pathological processes. EVs may play a pivotal role in the establishment of fungal infections, as they can interact with the host immune system to elicit multiple outcomes. It has been observed that, depending on the fungal pathogen, EVs can exacerbate or attenuate fungal infections. The study of the interaction between fungal EVs and the host immune system and understanding of the mechanisms that regulate those interactions might be useful for the development of new adjuvants as well as the improvement of protective immune responses against infectious or noninfectious diseases. In this review, we describe the immunomodulatory properties of EVs produced by pathogenic fungi and discuss their potential as adjuvants for prophylactic or therapeutic strategies.
