Influence or Interference? Understanding Crowding Effects in Forest Management Adoption
2024
More than half of the private forestland in the U.S. is under non-industrial private forest (NIPF) ownership. Understanding NIPF landowners’ decision-making is crucial for developing effective policy that promotes sustainable forest management practices and ensures forest health. This study investigates the factors influencing the adoption of different management practices, with a focus on potential crowding effects among these practices. Drawing on data from over four hundred NIPF landowners in the U.S. central hardwood region, a series of binary logistic regression models were employed to analyze the relationship between landowner and forestland characteristics and the likelihood of adopting various management practices, like invasive plant management, forest stand improvement, and grapevine control. The findings reveal that factors, such as forest acreage, proximity of landowner residence to the forest, and education level, significantly affect the likelihood of adopting management practices. More importantly, this study found evidence of crowding-in effects, where implementing one practice increased the probability of adopting others, suggesting a preference among NIPF landowners for a diverse approach to forest management.

Nostalgie et translatio studii’: l’image des « nains juches sur des épaules de géants »
2022
Nostalgia and translatio studii: “The image of dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants” “We are dwarfs perched on the shoulders of giants,” this famous image that John of Salisbury attributed to Bernard of Chartres was very popular throughout the Middle Ages, and far beyond, until it became the motto of Google Scholar. First, it expresses the respect and admiration that the masters of the twelfth century had for the authors of Antiquity whose works they commented on. But the formula is more complex than it seems and is not reduced to its nostalgic and backward-looking dimension, it is also forward-looking and allows to affirm the idea of progress, the cumulative dimension of knowledge and translatio studii, since the dwarf perched on a giant sees farther than the one who supports him.

A 70-Year-Old Woman with Restless Legs Syndrome and Insomnia
2016
A 70-year-old woman presented to our sleep center with her son for reassessment of restless legs syndrome (RLS) and insomnia in the context of taking benzodiazepines. This case illustrates the importance of getting a complete medication history in an elderly patient. In this case, the patient was taking multiple hypnotics without tapering off the previous ones. In addition, she was self-medicating with over-the-counter antihistamines, which was worsening not only her sleep, but also her RLS

Economic Studies of Maple Syrup Consumers and Producers in Indiana
Extensive tree-cutting operations and prioritization of crop production a century ago caused a significant decline in maple syrup production in Indiana. Today, there is an increasing consumer interest in natural and locally produced food, creating potential for regrowth in the industry. Understanding both production and consumption behaviors is crucial to capitalize on this potential and ensure sustainable sugarbush resources in the state. This thesis comprised two chapters, presenting the findings on consumers and producers, respectively. The first chapter examined the factors influencing consumers' behavior toward maple syrup purchase and satisfaction. Results suggested that suburban residency, education, age, income, and lifestyle factors – such as visiting farmers' markets and purchasing organic food – may influence consumers' attitudes toward purchasing maple syrup. Moreover, consumers who purchase organic food tended to be satisfied with maple syrup and were more likely to recommend it to others. The second chapter explored the factors motivating maple syrup producers to manage their forests and investigated whether crowd-in or crowd-out effects exist among different management practices. I used logistic regressions to identify relationships among the adoption of a variety of forest management practices and a variety of independent variables, using data pooled from two producer surveys conducted in Indiana in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Production as a hobby, owning a sugarbush, and production capacity all positively affected the likelihood of management practice adoption. In addition, crowding-in effects were identified in adopting forest management practices, suggesting that producers were more likely to adopt multiple practices simultaneously. These chapters emphasized the importance of understanding maple syrup consumer socio-demographic characteristics for effective marketing strategies and producer behavior for sustainable production practices to promote industry growth.

Arnulf’s commentary on the Metamorphoses of Ovid, which also comprised an accessus and above all the Allegorie super Ovidii Metamorphosin, provides a vast panorama of didactic interpretation, following a code sometimes courtly, sometimes religious, but wherein the essential viewpoint concerns a moral reading of mythological stories. The manuscript tradition of these texts, either copied by themselves as a sort of compendium or in the margins of the Ovidian text, and most often transmitted with another commentary, that of John of Garland, is complex and reveals the importance of the work of the copyists. In this type of school commentary, the copyist is more than a simple scribe: he takes the initiative, he decides to dismember the earlier text and suggests other associations. Side-by-side with Ovid the author, and Arnulf the grammaticus or commentator (or glossator), one must also consider the presence of a third person, an anonymous figure, and yet one who is essential, the copyist.
