Cinematic virtual reality (CVR) offers filmmakers a wide range of possibilities to explore new techniques regarding movie scripting, shooting and editing. Despite the many experiments performed so far both with both live action and computer-generated movies, just a few studies focused on analyzing how the various techniques actually affect the viewers’ experience. Like in traditional cinema, a key step for CVR screenwriters and directors is to choose from which perspective the viewers will see the scene, the so-called point of view (POV). The aim of this paper is to understand to what extent watching an immersive movie from a specific POV could impact the narrative engagement (NE), i.e., the viewers’ sensation of being immersed in the movie environment and being connected with its characters and story. Two POVs that are typically used in CVR, i.e., first-person perspective (1-PP) and external perspective (EP), are investigated through a user study in which both objective and subjective metrics were collected. The user study was carried out by leveraging two live action 360° short films with distinct scripts. The results suggest that the 1-PP experience could be more pleasant than the EP one in terms of overall NE and narrative presence, or even for all the NE dimensions if the potential of that POV is specifically exploited.

Unravelling the effects of silver nanoparticles on textiles: a comprehensive toxicological and quantitative analysis

BackgroundSilver nanoparticles (AgNPs), valued for their antimicrobial activity, were incorporated into cotton and polyamide 66 textiles to assess durability and toxicity. Commercial and lab-synthesized AgNPs were applied with atmospheric plasma pretreatment to improve adhesion to fibers.ResultsAgNPs showed predominantly spherical morphology (~ 50 nm), confirmed by DLS and TEM, with composition verified by XRD and EDS. Pretreated textiles exhibited enhanced AgNP retention, though notable silver loss occurred after repeated laundering. Zebrafish embryo assays indicated no significant morphological or developmental toxicity, even at high concentrations.ConclusionsThe results support the safe application of AgNPs in antimicrobial textiles but emphasize the need for improved fixation to reduce silver loss. Further studies should address long-term environmental impacts and enhance nanoparticle durability, contributing to safer nanomaterial-based textile technologies.

The work is aimed on the coatings used as a barrier against Heavy Liquid Metal (HLM) influence and coated material behaviour under mechanical loading. The comparison of two kinds of coatings deposited on two different steels is examined: ferritic-martensitic steel T91 coated with AlTiN and austenitic steel 316L coated with Al2O3. Both samples underwent tensile tests with constant extension rate in the HLM autoclave-cell for material testing. The testing environment in the cell was liquid PbBi eutectic at the temperature of 550 °C. The examination by Scanning electron microscopy and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy followed after exposure. The yield strength of the steel was exceeded in both cases, cracks and adhesion were studied in depth to characterize their resistance to the simultaneous effect of load and environment. Both coatings offered protection against corrosion; however, localized cracking gave rise to the damage of the substrate. These coatings provided a corrosion barrier, which once damaged is not able of self-healing.

Breath tests are attractive since they are noninvasive and can be repeated frequently in the dynamically changing state of critically ill patients. Volatile organic compounds can be produced anywhere in the body and are transported via the bloodstream and exhaled through the lung. They can reflect physiologic or pathologic biochemical processes such as lipid peroxidation, liver disease, renal failure, allograft rejection, and dextrose or cholesterol metabolism. This review describes the diagnostic potential of endogenous organic volatile substances in the breath of critically ill patients. Since many of these patients require ventilatory support, aspects of breath analysis under mechanical ventilation will be addressed. Analytical procedures, problems concerning the physiologic meaning of breath markers and future developments will be discussed.

The onset of the Middle Pleistocene (780 ka) in the European continent is associated with significant environmental variations (Middle Pleistocene Revolution), innovative behavioural strategies (bifacial productions, land-use patterns, raw material management) and a global increase in the archaeological evidence from 600 ka onward. Whether these changes are related to the rise of the Acheulean, the informative potential carried by these contexts is currently being explored through multidisciplinary approaches, allowing us to infer the role of these sites and the type of activities conducted. From this perspective, the Italian peninsula is a hot spot to compare the different technical behaviours and strategies human groups employ, given its crucial geographic location and solid archaeological record, both culturally and functionally speaking (the presence of sites with and without bifaces and core-and-flake assemblages). The site of Isernia La Pineta (590 ka), offering a rich lithic and faunal record, is an excellent case to join together the lithic technological study (i.e. “cultural” and technical tradition) with the functional analysis (i.e. activities conducted and exploited materials). Here, we present the result of the combined approach of these two disciplines on flint assemblages from layers t.3a and t.3coll. The new data will be discussed within the chrono-cultural framework of the Middle Pleistocene Revolution, linking the degree of complexity of the lithic production of Isernia with its function as a butchery site.

Analysis of resistance of T91 steel under load in liquid PbBi

This paper describes behaviour of the ferritic-martensitic steel T91 after long-term exposure in liquid eutectic PbBi. Small specimens of the steel were pre-loaded according to the ISO Standard No. 7539-2 and subsequently exposed to PbBi. The experiment was carried out in a flowing and static liquid metal medium at 350°C. The experimental time was selected for the flowing environment at 1000 hours and for static environment at 2000 hours. After exposure, the specimens were analysed by use SEM and EDX. Surface changes of the specimens from different experimental conditions were compared and discussed. The initiation of the cracks wasn´t observed in the monitored expositions.

This paper deals with the cryogenic risk arising from nitrogen spillage in a box located in Hall A of the underground laboratories of the Gran Sasso National Laboratory, Assergi (L'Aquila). This box will be used as a storage area for some sensitive material (crystals) which will be used for an experiment called \"CUORE\". Starting from the Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), in order to estimate the global risk for human activities, a consequence analysis has been performed, using EFFECTS software models. The gap between the latest and the real scenario has been covered by a real test during which a \"monitored, measured and controlled\" gas nitrogen flow has been spilled into the box. Furthermore, a description of a reliable base for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis is treated. Keywords: safety, cryogenic, ODH, FTA, CFD, confined space, underground laboratory.

Analysis of the Coating for Heavy Liquid Metal Applications

This paper deals with the behavior of the ferritic-martensitic steel T91 samples covered with an AlTiN black coating, which is mainly used for high temperature applications (> 800 ° C) because of its resistance to oxidation. The coating was applied by use of a combination of High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS) and Direct Current Magnetron Sputtering (DCMS). Samples were subjected to a tensile test in a static tank CALLISTO. The environment was liquid PbBi eutectic at a temperature of 550° C. Two types of samples, with a notch in the middle and without a notch, were tested. After exposure, the samples were subjected to morphological and chemical analyzes on SEM and EDX. Although the coating cracked over the entire length of the sample, high adhesion of the layer was demonstrated, the coating was delaminated locally only in the notch.

Mixed-Reality Robotic Games: Design Guidelines for Effective Entertainment with Consumer Robots

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the use of robotic technology at home. A number of service robots appeared on the market, supporting customers in the execution of everyday tasks. Roughly at the same time, consumer level robots started to be used also as toys or gaming companions. However, gaming possibilities provided by current off-the-shelf robotic products are generally quite limited, and this fact makes them quickly loose their attractiveness. A way that has been proven capable to boost robotic gaming and related devices consists in creating playful experiences in which physical and digital elements are combined together using Mixed Reality technologies. However, these games differ significantly from digital- or physical only experiences, and new design principles are required to support developers in their creative work. This papers addresses such need, by drafting a set of guidelines which summarize developments carried out by the research community and their findings.
