Mobilization of visceral adipose tissue related to the improvement in insulin sensitivity in response to physical training in NIDDM. Effects of branched-chain amino acid supplements. Abstract OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of an intense physical training program on abdominal fat distribution, glycemic control, and insulin sensitivity in patients with NIDDM and to determine whether branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplements influence these effects. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients (ages 45 +/- 2 [mean +/- SE] years, BMI 30.2 +/- 0.9 kg/m2, HbA1c 7.9 +/- 0.3%) were randomly assigned to four groups: training plus BCAA supplement (n = 6), training plus placebo (n = 6), sedentary plus BCAA supplement (n = 6), and sedentary plus placebo (n = 6). Physical training consisted of a supervised 45-min cycling exercise at 75% of their oxygen uptake peak (VO2 peak) two times per week and an intermittent exercise one time per week for 2 months. RESULTS: Patients who exercised increased their VO2 peak by 41% and their insulin sensitivity by 46%. Physical training significantly decreased abdominal fat evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (umbilicus), with a greater loss of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) (48%) in comparison with the loss of subcutaneous adipose tissue (18%), but did not significantly affect body weight. The change in visceral abdominal fat was associated with the improvement in insulin sensitivity (r = 0.84, P = 0.001). BCAA supplementation had no effect on abdominal fat and glucose metabolism. CONCLUSIONS: Physical training resulted in an improvement in insulin sensitivity with concomitant loss of VAT and should be included in the treatment program for patients with NIDDM.
Effects of hypoxia and subsequent recovery on turbot Scophthalmus maximus: hormonal changes and anaerobic metabolism
Hormonal changes, substrate mobilization and energy metabolism were studied in turbot Scophthalmus maximus exposed to 3 hypoxic conditions (oxygen partial pressure in water, PwO sub(2) = 90, 60 and 30 mm Hg) followed by recovery under normoxia. Measurements of the blood pH, total CO sub(2) concentration, arterial oxygen partial pressure, hematocrit, glucose, lactate, and 'stress' hormones (cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline) plasmatic concentrations were performed. High-energy phosphorylated compounds, glycogen, glucose and lactate concentrations were also determined in liver and white muscle tissues. Exposure to 90 or 60 mm Hg did not induce any major physiological change, as hyperventilation by itself could compensate for the decrease in water oxygen tension. At 30 mm Hg, marked increases in cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline concentrations, associated with a decrease in blood arterial oxygen partial pressure, were observed. During exposure to 30 mm Hg, turbot resorted to anaerobic metabolism, resulting in glycogen depletion and lactate production. This mechanism appeared to be efficient enough to produce energy, as no significant change in phosphorylated compounds and adenylate energy charges in muscle and liver could be observed. These results indicate an absence of metabolic depression in turbot down to 30 mm Hg and confirm the high capacity of this species to cope with low water oxygen tension.
Good science and the marketplace for drugs: A conversation with Jean-Pierre Garnier
In an interview, Jean-Pierre Garnier, CEO of GlaxoSmithKline, says his company is in favor of a broadened Medicare drug benefit. It is a good deal for government to spend more on drugs, he says, because they will save more than they spend. He says that generic drugs are a major factor in the pharmaceutical industry - they signal the end of a product life cycle, and they take over. The problem is that generic companies no longer want to wait until the patent expires to come to market, so they challenge the patents earlier and earlier. He also says that GlaxoSmithKline is positioning itself to be very strong in emerging markets - China in particular. Addressing imperatives for health care systems worldwide, Garnier says that countries need to bring oxygen into their systems in the form of private resources.
Oxidation-Resistant Gold-55 Clusters
Gold nanoparticles ranging in diameter from 1 to 8 nanometers were prepared on top of silicon wafers in order to study the size dependence of their oxidation behavior when exposed to atomic oxygen. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed a maximum oxidation resistance for \"magic-number\" clusters containing 55 gold atoms. This inertness is not related to electron confinement leading to a size-induced metal-to-insulator transition, but rather seems to be linked to the closed-shell structure of such magic clusters. The result additionally suggests that gold-55 clusters may act as especially effective oxidation catalysts, such as for oxidizing carbon monoxide.
Plant functional markers capture ecosystem properties during secondary succession
Although the structure and composition of plant communities is known to influence the functioning of ecosystems, there is as yet no agreement as to how these should be described from a functional perspective. We tested the biomass ratio hypothesis, which postulates that ecosystem properties should depend on species traits and on species contribution to the total biomass of the community, in a successional sere following vineyard abandonment in the Mediterranean region of France. Ecosystem-specific net primary productivity, litter decomposition rate, and total soil carbon and nitrogen varied significantly with field age, and correlated with community-aggregated (i.e., weighed according to the relative abundance of species) functional leaf traits. The three easily measurable traits tested, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content, and nitrogen concentration, provide a simple means to scale up from organ to ecosystem functioning in complex plant communities. We propose that they be called \"functional markers,\" and be used to assess the impacts of community changes on ecosystem properties induced, in particular, by global change drivers.
A gap analysis on modelling of sea lice infection pressure from salmonid farms. I. A structured knowledge review
Sustainability of aquaculture, an important component of the blue economy, relies in part on ensuring assessment of environmental impact and interactions relating to sea lice dispersing from open pen salmon and trout farms. We review research underpinning the key stages in the sea lice infection process to support modelling of lice on wild salmon in relation to those on farms. The review is split into 5 stages: larval production; larval transport and survival; exposure and infestation of new hosts; development and survival of the attached stages; and impact on host populations. This modular structure allows the existing published data to be reviewed and assessed to identify data gaps in modelling sea lice impacts in a systematic way. Model parameterisation and parameter variation is discussed for each stage, providing an overview of knowledge strength and gaps. We conclude that a combination of literature review, empirical data collection and modelling studies are required on an iterative basis to ensure best practice is applied for sustainable aquaculture. The knowledge gained can then be optimised and applied at regional scales, with the most suitable modelling frameworks applied for the system, given regional limitations.
A gap analysis on modelling of sea lice infection pressure from salmonid farms. II. Identifying and ranking knowledge gaps: output of an international workshop
Sea lice are a major health hazard for farmed Atlantic salmon in Europe, and their impact is felt globally. Given the breadth of ongoing research in sea lice dispersal and population modelling, and focus on research-led adaptive management, we brought experts together to discuss research knowledge gaps. Gaps for salmon lice infection pressure from fish farms were identified and scored by experts in sea lice-aquaculture-environment interactions, at an international workshop in 2021. The contributors included experts based in Scotland, Norway, Ireland, Iceland, Canada, the Faroe Islands, England and Australia, employed by governments, industry, universities and non-government organisations. The workshop focused on knowledge gaps underpinning 5 key stages in salmon lice infection pressure from fish farms: larval production; larval transport and survival; exposure and infestation of new hosts; development and survival of the attached stages; and impact on host populations. A total of 47 research gaps were identified; 5 broad themes emerged with 13 priority research gaps highlighted as important across multiple sectors. The highest-ranking gap called for higher quality and frequency of on-farm lice count data, along with better sharing of information across sectors. We highlight the need for synergistic international collaboration to maximise transferable knowledge. Round table discussions through collaborative workshops provide an important forum for experts to discuss and agree research priorities.
LEDA Traitbase: a database of life-history traits of the Northwest European flora
1. An international group of scientists has built an open internet data base of life-history traits of the Northwest European flora (the LEDA-Traitbase) that can be used as a data source for fundamental research on plant biodiversity and coexistence, macro-ecological patterns and plant functional responses. 2. The species-trait matrix comprises referenced information under the control of an editorial board, for ca. 3000 species of the Northwest European flora, combining existing information and additional measurements. The data base currently contains data on 26 plant traits that describe three key features of plant dynamics: persistence, regeneration and dispersal. The LEDA-Traitbase is freely available at http://www.leda-traitbase.org. 3. We present the structure of the data base and an overview of the trait information available. 4. Synthesis. The LEDA Traitbase is useful for large-scale analyses of functional responses of communities to environmental change, effects of community trait composition on ecosystem properties and patterns of rarity and invasiveness, as well as linkages between traits as expressions of fundamental trade-offs in plants.
Study of the linearity of CABRI experimental ionization chambers during RIA transients
CABRI is an experimental pulse reactor operated by CEA at the Cadarache research center and funded by the French Nuclear Safety and Radioprotection Institute (IRSN). For the purpose of the CABRI International Program (CIP), operated and managed by IRSN under an OECD/NEA framework it has been refurbished since 2003 to be able to provide experiments in prototypical PWR conditions (155 bar, 300 °C) in order to study the fuel behavior under Reactivity Initiated Accident (RIA) conditions. This paper first reminds the objectives of the power commissioning tests performed on the CABRI facility. The design and location of the neutron detectors monitoring the core power are also presented. Then it focuses on the different methodologies used to calibrate the detectors and check the consistency and co-linearity of the measurements. Finally, it presents the methods used to check the linearity of the neutron detectors up to the high power levels (~20 GW) reached during power transients. Some results obtained during the power tests campaign are also presented.
