Neon Signs in Cold War Hong Kong: Between Language Politics and Visual Hybridisation

Today, neon signs have mostly disappeared in Hong Kong. Yet, throughout the second half of the twentieth century, Hong Kong’s neon signs were powerful representations of the city’s blended history and multilingual encounters after World War II. In splendid colours and various shapes, neon signs negotiated different cultural streams, promoted cultural diversity, and fostered local identities. From 1949 to 1978, when the borders between the Eastern and Western Blocs were heavily fortified, Hong Kong served as a gateway to China, where significant China–Western convergences took place within the city. Using digital archives to examine the hybridity and fluidity of neon signs in 1960s and 1970s Hong Kong, this article argues that neon signs serve as a platform where diverse cultural trends are combined and reinvented. First, I provide a chronological narrative of neon signs and show how they reflect the sociocultural tensions of Cold War Hong Kong. Second, by contextualising the neon signs against the unique historical period, I explore the interplay of languages, colours, and designs of neon signs that shaped Hong Kong as a liminal space in the bipolar system. I argue that, in linguistic and aesthetic terms, neon signs are symbols of Hong Kong as a Cold War city. Linguistic, aesthetic, and cross-cultural spaces constituted Hong Kong’s translational spaces, which witnessed the city’s gradual evolution from a culturally hybridised city into a cosmopolitan one.

Nature‐Based Profiling of Subsurface Soil Stiffness Driven by Tidal Forces

Accurate characterization of deformation modulus of soils is essential for seismic hazard assessments and resilient geotechnical infrastructure design. Conventional techniques often yield discontinuous or biased modulus estimates due to sample disturbance and limited spatial coverage. For the first time, we introduce an in situ approach that exploits natural tidal forces coupled with distributed fiber‐optic sensing technology for continuous profiling of subsurface soil stiffness in a tidal river delta. Field measurements in the Yangtze Delta captured synchronous tidal‐induced pore pressure fluctuations and soil strain responses, demonstrating consistent linear stress–strain behavior from which depth‐resolved constrained moduli were derived. This tidal‐driven method effectively identifies subtle mechanical contrasts and meter‐scale interlayers with anomalously high or low stiffness, and enables continuous, long‐term monitoring of temporal and seasonal changes in soil stiffness. The proposed technique holds substantial promise for applications in sedimentological process studies and resilient infrastructure development within geologically dynamic coastal and deltaic environments.

Association between triglyceride-glucose related indices with the all-cause and cause-specific mortality among the population with metabolic syndrome
Background
Triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has been determined to play a role in the onset of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Whether the TyG index and TyG with the combination of obesity indicators are associated with the clinical outcomes of the MetS population remains unknown.
Method
Participants were extracted from multiple cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2018 years. Three indicators were constructed including TyG index, TyG combining with waist circumference (TyG-WC), and TyG combining with waist-to-height ratio (TyG-WHtR). The MetS was defined according to the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCPE) Adult Treatment Panel III. Kaplan-Meier (KM) curves, restricted cubic splines (RCS), and the Cox proportional hazard model were used to evaluate the associations between TyG-related indices and mortality of the MetS population. The sensitive analyses were performed to check the robustness of the main findings.
Results
There were 10,734 participants with MetS included in this study, with 5,570 females and 5,164 males. The median age of the study population was 59 years old. The multivariate Cox regression analyses showed high levels of TyG-related indices were significantly associated with the all-cause mortality of MetS population [TyG index:

< 0.001). The RCS curves showed a non-linear trend between TyG and TyG-WC indices with all-cause mortality (p for nonlinearity = 0.004 and 0.001, respectively). The sensitive analyses supported the positive correlations between TyG-related indices with mortality of the MetS population.
Conclusion
Our study highlights the clinical value of TyG-related indices in predicting the survival of the MetS population. TyG-related indices would be the surrogate biomarkers for the follow-up of the MetS population.

The prognostic significance of PD-L1 expression in patients with glioma: A meta-analysis

A large number of studies have shown that programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) is abnormally expressed in gliomas. However, the prognostic significance of PD-L1 expression in glioma patients remains unresolved. Accordingly, we conducted a meta-analysis to determine the prognostic role of high PD-L1 in patients with glioma. Electronic databases were searched to identify studies evaluating PD-L1 expression and overall survival (OS) in these patients. A total of 6 studies (published in 4 articles) that involved 1052 patients were included. Pooled results showed that high PD-L1 expression was associated with worse OS in glioma patients (HR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.02–1.65,
P
= 0.032). Further subgroup analysis indicated that high PD-L1 expression in glioblastoma (GBM) was also associated with worse OS (HR = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.03–1.90,

= 0.030). Conversely, in index subgroup analysis, neither PD-L1 protein (HR = 1.43, 95% CI: 0.97–2.10,

= 0.068) nor gene (HR = 1.20, 95% CI: 0.83–1.74,

= 0.322) expression was significantly associated with OS. PD-L1 may represent a promising biomarker that predicts disease progression in patients with glioma or GBM. However, because of our limited sample size, further prospective or retrospective multi-centre, well-designed studies should be performed to verify this result.

Anti-Fouling Strategies of Electrochemical Sensors for Tumor Markers

The early detection and prognosis of cancers require sensitive and accurate detection methods; with developments in medicine, electrochemical biosensors have been developed that can meet these clinical needs. However, the composition of biological samples represented by serum is complex; when substances undergo non-specific adsorption to an electrode and cause fouling, the sensitivity and accuracy of the electrochemical sensor are affected. In order to reduce the effects of fouling on electrochemical sensors, a variety of anti-fouling materials and methods have been developed, and enormous progress has been made over the past few decades. Herein, the recent advances in anti-fouling materials and strategies for using electrochemical sensors for tumor markers are reviewed; we focus on new anti-fouling methods that separate the immunorecognition and signal readout platforms.

Long non‐coding RNAs (LncRNAs) have been recently found to be pervasively transcribed in the genome and critical regulators of the epigenome. HOTAIR, as a well‐known LncRNA, has been found to play important roles in several tumors. Herein, the clinical application value and biological functions of HOTAIR were focused and explored in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). It was found that there was a great upregulation of HOTAIR in ESCC compared to their adjacent normal esophageal tissues. Meanwhile, patients with high HOTAIR expression have a significantly poorer prognosis than those with low expression. Moreover, HOTAIR was further validated to promote migration and invasion of ESCC cells in vitro. Then some specific molecules with great significance were investigated after HOTAIR overexpression using microarray and quantitative real time‐polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). WIF‐1 playing an important role in Wnt/β‐catenin signaling pathway was selected and further tested by immunehistochemistry. Generally, inverse correlation between HOTAIR and WIF‐1 expression was demonstrated both in ESCC cells and tissues. Mechanistically, HOTAIR directly decreased WIF‐1 expression by promoting its histone H3K27 methylation in the promoter region and then activated the Wnt/β‐catenin signaling pathway. This newly identified HOTAIR/WIF‐1 axis clarified the molecular mechanism of ESCC cell metastasis and represented a novel therapeutic target in patients with ESCC. HOTAIR, a long non coding RNA, has been linked to the progression of several types of human cancer. In this study, we found that HOTAIR was not only significantly up‐regulated in tumor tissues, but also significantly associated with poor clinical outcome in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). ESCC cells with HOTAIR overexpression displayed aberrant activated WNT signaling pathway by inhibiting the expression of WNT‐inhibitor factor 1, thereby promote the migration and invasion of ESCC cells. On the contrary, silencing of HOTAIR in ESCC cells led to decreased migration and invasion ability. Together, these results suggest that HOTAIR overexpression may serve as a novel prognostic biomarker and potential therapeutic target for the treatment of human ESCC.

Towards full-colour tunability of inorganic electrochromic devices using ultracompact fabry-perot nanocavities

Intercalation-based inorganic materials that change their colours upon ion insertion/extraction lay an important foundation for existing electrochromic technology. However, using only such inorganic electrochromic materials, it is very difficult to achieve the utmost goal of full-colour tunability for future electrochromic technology mainly due to the absence of structural flexibility. Herein, we demonstrate an ultracompact asymmetric Fabry-Perot (F-P) nanocavity-type electrochromic device formed by using partially reflective metal tungsten as the current collector and reflector layer simultaneously; this approach enables fairly close matching of the reflections at both interfaces of the WO
3
thin layer in device form, inducing a strong interference. Such an interference-enhanced device that is optically manipulated at the nanoscale displays various structural colours before coloration and, further, can change to other colours including blue, red, and yellow by changing the optical indexes (n, k) of the tungsten oxide layer through ion insertion.
Electrochromic devices are generally not capable of tuning more than one color. Here, the authors use Fabry-Perot nanocavities to create electrochromic devices with a wide color tuning range and vibrant color.

Prognostic effect of triglyceride glucose-related parameters on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in the United States adults with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease
Backgrounds
Insulin resistance (IR) plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of the metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). However, it remains unclear whether triglyceride–glucose (TyG) related parameters, which serve as useful biomarkers to assess IR, have prognostic effects on mortality outcomes of MASLD.
Methods
Participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 1999 to 2018 years were included. TyG and its related parameters [TyG-waist circumference (TyG-WC) and TyG-waist to height ratio (TyG-WHtR)] were calculated. Kaplan–Meier curves, Cox regression analysis, and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were conducted to evaluate the association between TyG-related indices with the all-cause and cardiovascular mortality of adults with MASLD. The concordance index (C-index) was used to evaluate the prediction accuracy of TyG-related indices.
Results
A total of 8208 adults (4209 men and 3999 women, median age 49.00 years) with MASLD were included in this study. Multivariate-adjusted Cox regression analysis revealed that high quartile levels of TyG-related indices were significantly associated with the all-cause mortality of participants with MASLD [

= 0.025). Subgroup analysis suggested that adults aged < 65 years old and those without comorbidities were more sensitive to the mortality prediction of TyG-related indices.
Conclusion
Findings of this study highlight the predictive value of TyG-related indices, especially the TyG-WHtR index, in the mortality outcomes of adults with MASLD. TyG-related indices would be surrogate biomarkers for the clinical management of MASLD.

Resequencing 545 ginkgo genomes across the world reveals the evolutionary history of the living fossil

As Charles Darwin anticipated, living fossils provide excellent opportunities to study evolutionary questions related to extinction, competition, and adaptation. Ginkgo (
Ginkgo biloba
L.) is one of the oldest living plants and a fascinating example of how people have saved a species from extinction and assisted its resurgence. By resequencing 545 genomes of ginkgo trees sampled from 51 populations across the world, we identify three refugia in China and detect multiple cycles of population expansion and reduction along with glacial admixture between relict populations in the southwestern and southern refugia. We demonstrate multiple anthropogenic introductions of ginkgo from eastern China into different continents. Further analyses reveal bioclimatic variables that have affected the geographic distribution of ginkgo and the role of natural selection in ginkgo’s adaptation and resilience. These investigations provide insights into the evolutionary history of ginkgo trees and valuable genomic resources for further addressing various questions involving living fossil species.
Ginkgo is one of the living fossils from the plant kingdom. Here, authors conduct population genomics analyses to reveal its refugia and demographic history, and provide evidence of multiple anthropogenic introductions of ginkgo from eastern China into different continents.
