Methane hydrate dissociation across the Oligocene–Miocene boundary
Methane hydrate dissociation has long been considered as a mechanism for global carbon cycle perturbations, climate change and even mass extinctions in Earth’s history. However, direct evidence of hydrate destabilization and methane release coinciding with such events is scarce. Here we report the presence of diagnostic lipid biomarkers with depleted carbon isotopes from three sites in the Southern Ocean that are directly linked to methane release and subsequent oxidation across the Oligocene–Miocene boundary (23 million years ago). The biomarker evidence indicates that the hydrate destabilization was initiated during the peak of the Oligocene–Miocene boundary glaciation and sea-level low stand, consistent with our model results suggesting the decrease in hydrostatic pressure eroded the base of global methane hydrate stability zones. Aerobic oxidation of methane in seawater consumes oxygen and acidifies the ocean, acting as a negative feedback that perhaps facilitated the rapid and mysterious termination of glaciation in the early Miocene. Methane hydrate dissociation occurred across the Oligocene–Miocene boundary, which may have contributed to the termination of glaciation, according to analysis of lipid biomarkers from the Southern Ocean.

Discovery of a rich gene pool of bat SARS-related coronaviruses provides new insights into the origin of SARS coronavirus
A large number of SARS-related coronaviruses (SARSr-CoV) have been detected in horseshoe bats since 2005 in different areas of China. However, these bat SARSr-CoVs show sequence differences from SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in different genes (S, ORF8, ORF3, etc) and are considered unlikely to represent the direct progenitor of SARS-CoV. Herein, we report the findings of our 5-year surveillance of SARSr-CoVs in a cave inhabited by multiple species of horseshoe bats in Yunnan Province, China. The full-length genomes of 11 newly discovered SARSr-CoV strains, together with our previous findings, reveals that the SARSr-CoVs circulating in this single location are highly diverse in the S gene, ORF3 and ORF8. Importantly, strains with high genetic similarity to SARS-CoV in the hypervariable N-terminal domain (NTD) and receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the S1 gene, the ORF3 and ORF8 region, respectively, were all discovered in this cave. In addition, we report the first discovery of bat SARSr-CoVs highly similar to human SARS-CoV in ORF3b and in the split ORF8a and 8b. Moreover, SARSr-CoV strains from this cave were more closely related to SARS-CoV in the non-structural protein genes ORF1a and 1b compared with those detected elsewhere. Recombination analysis shows evidence of frequent recombination events within the S gene and around the ORF8 between these SARSr-CoVs. We hypothesize that the direct progenitor of SARS-CoV may have originated after sequential recombination events between the precursors of these SARSr-CoVs. Cell entry studies demonstrated that three newly identified SARSr-CoVs with different S protein sequences are all able to use human ACE2 as the receptor, further exhibiting the close relationship between strains in this cave and SARS-CoV. This work provides new insights into the origin and evolution of SARS-CoV and highlights the necessity of preparedness for future emergence of SARS-like diseases.

A 12-Million-Year Temperature History of the Tropical Pacific Ocean
The appearance of permanent El Niño–like conditions prior to 3 million years ago is founded on sea-surface temperature (SST) reconstructions that show invariant Pacific warm pool temperatures and negligible equatorial zonal temperature gradients. However, only a few SST records are available, and these are potentially compromised by changes in seawater chemistry, diagenesis, and calibration limitations. For this study, we establish new biomarker-SST records and show that the Pacific warm pool was ∼4°C warmer 12 million years ago. Both the warm pool and cold tongue slowly cooled toward modern conditions while maintaining a zonal temperature gradient of ∼3°C in the late Miocene, which increased during the Plio-Pleistocene. Our results contrast with previous temperature reconstructions that support the supposition of a permanent El Niño–like state.
Association between C-reactive protein-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index and overall survival in patients with colorectal cancer: From the investigation on nutrition status and clinical outcome of common cancers study
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is among the most common malignant cancers worldwide, and its development is influenced by inflammation, nutrition, and the immune status. Therefore, we combined C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin, and lymphocyte, which could reflect above status, to be the CRP-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index, and evaluated its association with overall survival (OS) in patients with CRC. The clinicopathological and laboratory characteristics of 1260 patients with CRC were collected from the Investigation on Nutrition Status and Clinical Outcome of Common Cancers (INSCOC) study. Cox regression analysis was performed to assess the association between the CALLY index and OS. A nomogram including sex, age, the CALLY index and TNM stage was constructed. The Concordance Index (C-index) was utilized to evaluate the prognostic value of the CALLY index and classical CRC prognostic factors, such as modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS), neutrocyte to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), systemic immune inflammation index (SII), and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), as well as to assess the prognostic value of the nomogram and TNM stage. Multivariate Cox regression analyses demonstrated that the CALLY index was independently associated with OS in patients with CRC [Hazard ratio (HR) = 0.91, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.87-0.95, <0.001]. The CALLY index showed the highest prognostic value (C-index = 0.666, 95% CI = 0.638-0.694, <0.001), followed by mGPS, NLR, SII, and PLR. The nomogram demonstrated higher prognostic value (C-index = 0.784, 95% CI = 0.762-0.807, <0.001) than the TNM stage. The CALLY index was independently associated with OS in patients with CRC and showed higher prognostic value than classical CRC prognostic factors. The nomogram could provide more accurate prognostic prediction than TNM stage.
Assembly of root-associated microbial community of typical rice cultivars in different soil types
Root-associated microbial communities have been widely studied in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, but have been much less explored in agronomically important crops. Here, we used deep pyrosequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA to identify and characterize the root-associated microbial community of three traditional rice cultivars (representing indica and japonica subspecies and a hybrid) cultivated in typical paddy soils from China. We separated the root microbiota into endosphere and rhizosphere compartments, which were found to be the major determinant of variation in the total root microbial community. The microbial communities in each rhizocompartment were strongly influenced by soil type, while rice genotype exhibited a small but significant influence on both endosphere and rhizosphere microbiota. Pairwise comparisons showed that the endophytic bacterial community of indica rice differed significantly from that of japonica rice, while no remarkable differences were noted when comparing the community of indica vs. hybrid or japonica vs. hybrid. A core functional rice endophytic microbiota was identified, which accounted for relative abundances of up to 72.5% of the total microbial community. The 88 core root operational taxonomic units (OTUs) mainly belonged to the phylum Proteobacteria specifically Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, and Deltaproteobacteria. These results clarify the rice root-associated microbial community assemblage and facilitate the construction of an artificial core root microbiota to promote plant growth and resistance.
Non‐vitamin K oral anticoagulants versus vitamin K antagonists in post transcatheter aortic valve replacement patients with clinical indication for oral anticoagulation: A meta‐analysis
Background Current guidelines recommend oral anticoagulation (OAC) following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in patients with clinical indication, but the optimal antithrombotic regimen remains uncertain. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of non‐vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) versus vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) in patients undergoing TAVR with concomitant indication of OAC. Hypothesis Comparing with VKAs therapy, NOACs are similar in reducing the all‐cause mortality and major bleeding in post‐TAVR patients requiring OAC medication. Methods We searched the databases of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane library databases to identify studies that investigated NOACs versus VKAs after TAVR in patients with another indication of OAC, which were published before 28th September 28, 2021. The effectiveness of outcomes was all‐cause mortality and stroke or systemic embolism, while the main safety outcome was major and/or life‐threatening bleeding. The hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was used as a measure of treatment effect. Results Our search identified eight studies. We included 4947 post‐TAVR patients with another indication of OAC allocated to the NOAC (n = 2146) or VKA groups (n = 2801). There were no significant differences in the all‐cause mortality (HR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.77–1.08, p = .29, I2 = 47%), stroke or systemic embolism (HR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.68–1.37, p = .84, I2 = 0%), and major and/or life‐threatening bleeding (HR: 1.09, 95% CI: 0.89–1.32, p = .40, I2 = 30%) in both groups. Conclusion Among post‐TAVR patients who required OAC therapy, NOACs therapy compared to VKAs is similar in reducing the all‐cause mortality, stroke or systemic embolism, and major and/or life‐threatening bleeding events.
Lightweight Power-Line Visual Detection in Agricultural UAV Scenarios Based on an Improved YOLOv12n Model
To address the problems of low detection accuracy, slow inference speed, and high computational cost in power-line detection during autonomous operations of agricultural UAVs, this study proposes an improved object detection model based on YOLOv12n. A power-line dataset was constructed using real-field images supplemented with the TTPLA dataset. The lightweight EfficientNetV2 was introduced as the backbone network to replace the original backbone. In the neck, dynamic snake convolution and a multi-scale cross-axis attention mechanism were incorporated, while the region attention partitioning and residual efficient layer aggregation network from the baseline model were retained. In the head, a Mixture of Experts (MoE) layer from ParameterNet was integrated. The improved model achieved 80.07%, 43.07%, and 77.35% of the original model’s parameters, computation, and weight size, respectively. With an IoU threshold greater than 0.5, the mean average precision (mAP0.5) reached 75.5%, representing improvements of 13.53%, 15.09%, 7.5% and 7.54% over YOLOv8n, YOLOv11n, YOLOv5n, and Line-YOLO, respectively. Only inferior to RF-DETR-Nano. On mobile-end testing, the inference speed reached 88.36 FPS and exhibits the highest inference speed across all experimental models. The improved model demonstrates excellent generalization, robustness, detection accuracy, target localization, and processing speed, making it highly suitable for power-line detection in agricultural UAV applications and providing technical support for future autonomous and intelligent agricultural operations.
